Doughnuts
If The Chico Beat keeps focusing on local issues with some indepth writing, it will grab readership. We'll see if advertisers follow.
I've already enjoyed reading its indepth article on the transition within the City's Planning Department.
The Chico Beat also recently highlighted the pay-to-play scene in Sacramento between lobbyists and politicians. Our own Assemblymember Rick Keene is featured in a write-up called "Dollars to Doughnuts." Watch the video.
After watching the video, you'll wonder what they did with the leftover doughnuts. Keene clearly didn't eat the leftovers given that he's physically fitter since he left the Chico City Council for the good eating in Sacramento.
Assemblymember Keene has raised a lot of money. According to the California Secretary of State, Keene had an ending cash balance of $575,411 (>$700,000 raised) at the end of June 2006.
Keene has raised significantly more than his Assembly colleague Doug LaMalfa, who had an ending cash balance of $255,629 (>$500,000 raised) at the end of June 2006.
Poor State Senator Sam Aanestad reported only $146,831 (>$289,000 raised) at the end of June 2006. He clearly needs to make more friends with business before the State Legislature.
Whenever Congressman Wally Herger retires, Keene will be well-positioned to run to replace Herger. He's probably the most ambitious politician in the region and his fundraising prowess clearly proves it.
Here are the top donors to each of our state representatives and a spreadsheet of all of their donors at the end of June 2006.
