Not-So Winners
NOT-SO WINNERS
Rainbow-Colored Kites: I don't expect rainbow-colored kites to resurface in future local elections, although I look forward to watching Mary Poppins' "Let's Go Fly a Kite" again in French. Check it out above.
Dan Herbert: I was surprised Herbert even ran for re-election given his patience and energy on the City Council was clearly waning over the last few years. Supposedly, he ran to support Michael Dailey. Unfortunately, he didn’t help Dailey.
Regardless, I'm tipping my hat to Herbert for eight years of public service. He advocated vigorously for his positions and did a fine job as Mayor dealing with Halloween and trying to tackle alcohol abuse issues.
Michael Dailey: Another decent guy, but he had a very poor showing. He’s still got many years ahead of him to run again and contribute to the community in other ways. He's just starting in City politics so a last place finish is not the end of the world.
One problem is that Dailey kept reminding voters that he was “young and could reach “students in almost every forum and campaign medium. Why remind voters you’re “young and therefore perhaps a little inexperienced? I believe this was a fundamental mistake, along with his decision to run like twins with Herbert.
Official Slates: Bad idea. Do I need to expand on this?
The E-R endorsements: The last few elections have been rough for many of the E-R’s preferred candidates and editorial causes.
Anthony Watts: He had better name identification than any other candidate. He ran four years ago without a campaign and won. I always felt this year it was his race to lose. I even thought he’d be a stronger opponent for Supervisor against Kirk before he pulled out. Given his fourth place finish by 1,126 votes behind third place finisher Kaiser, my assumption was likely wrong.
Rick Keene: Keene will go far for himself politically, but his sidekick Herbert lost and one of his proteges, Dailey, got cold water thrown at him. And all those campaign mailers sent by his political operatives via Norcal Business PAC and Lincoln Club of Superior California with Keene's lovely photo clearly didn't persuade enough voters.
Norcal Business PAC/Hooker Oak Alliance: There's a very cheesy song by the 80's band Poison called "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." The chorus goes like: "Every rose has its thorn. Just like every night has its dawn. Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song." This chorus of this bad song sums up the sad election for these two groups.
Steve Bertagna: This is now twice he's lost his bid for Supervisor against two different opponents. Some might say he's already lost three times since he lost to Kirk in both the primary and general election. But as long as he's having fun, he might as well get ready to run for his fourth City Council term in 2008 and try again for Supervisor in 2010. Let the fun begin!
Chamber of Commerce: If Nickell wins, that means there are five City Councilors who were not endorsed by the Chamber. Given the possible make-up of the CIty Council, an increasing number of voters are clearly able to recognize that someone can be pro-business without being mostly a rubber stamp to many development projects.
Today's Scrabble word is coeval, or existing during the same period of time.
