Big Box
A friend passed on this photo that touches upon a theme that will be debated when the Chico City Council considers the expansion of south Wal-Mart and the proposed new north Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Someone recently suggested putting a disc golf course at the old pitch and putt site where Wal Mart wants to put its new super center.
Sounds good to me. Even better, there are some reports that Wal Mart is having second thoughts about Super Centers as profitable ventures--maybe the disc golfers could get that site without a fight.

Thanks Jim,
The more places to play, the better. It's not an alternative site until there's a course there, but the idea sounds great to me too.

Jim Gregg Payne,
Not to be a parade-rainer-onner but that site is privately owned in unincorporated Butte County. Wal-Mart's EIR included the proposal to annex that 20 acre site in addition to another ~120 acres. I assume the additional acrage was to make the annexation a contiguous link to the city.
Without the additional sales tax income from a retail establishment there is really no need for Chico to annex the property.
CARD's sphere of influence extends beyond that of Chico, and so CARD would be the likely agency to develop a recreation component at that site.
All that being said, just because Wal-Mart might decide not to build there does not mean the property is available. The site includes road access to HWY99, and would be a logical location for future retail development. That means the property likely has a high monetary value.
If you thought $600K was a lot of money to plan a disc golf course imagine pushing for a couple of million to buy that piece of property. And you'd have to ask CARD or the county to pony up the money. Neither has very deep pockets.
Of course if the property could be had on the cheap it's a nice locale.
