Wikipedia Chico

wikipedia-logo.pngEver read the Wikipedia entry for Chico, CA?

I actually think it's a pretty good entry full of interesting information.

My favorite is the list of notable Chicoans, or people who once lived in Chico. The list includes Saudi billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi who has a Queen song named after him.

And I love this historical tidbit: "On July 31, 1961 the first-ever hijacking on United States soil occurred at the Chico Municipal Airport. Two men were critically wounded and the hijacker was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison."

Is this true? I'm trying to locate the source of information.

Keep in mind that Wikipedia is not always accurate since it relies on the community to provide information and to fact check.

Greg Bard, who launched the Chico Wiki, is one of the main contributors to the Chico entry on Wikipedia.

Today's Scrabble word ablins, or perhaps.

The hijacking entry does list its' source. You can read about on page 85 of "Chico: A 20th Century Pictoral History." Since it was published by the Chico ER, and all the bloggers here are ER writers, there should be no problem confirming. I didn't launch the Chico wiki myself, however I am a contributor and commend it to everyone. --Greg Bard

Greg: You and other contributors have done a great job! I noticed the "Chico: 20th Century Pictoral History" citation too but I was curious to find other online sources and references to the 1961 hijacking incident. I saw that the E-R published an article but I didn't feel like paying to access an archived article.

It's just referenced in various trivia settings, not on official hijacking lists. Here are some excerpts from the ER story, plus a random dig on the ER: http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2006/07/

Interesting how the hijacking garnered the attention of the OC Weekly's blog.

The Enterprise-Record's article on the hijacking anniversary has been reactivated and can be found here (free of charge):

Hello. I would just like to make a quick correction: I launched the Chico Wiki in the Summer of 2006 (see Wiki News), not Greg Bard. Greg Bard has been an absolutely wonderful contributor and has really helped shape the wiki into an information powerhouse. Thanks Greg!
