What a Difference a Few Months Make
|
| In its December 2002 newsletter the Sierra Club Yahi Group (Chico's local chapter) published an article supporting disc golf at the highway 32 site for all the right reasons. An excerpt of that article is shown above. The entire article can be seen here (4MEG PDF) . It was written by the Secretary of the Yahi Group, who was clearly speaking on behalf of that organization. It was a great example of a local environmental group supporting conservation and recreation in a public park setting. With support like that disc golf was moving forward as a coordinated effort to improve the area being used and care for the property in a way that minimized the footprint of the recreation. It's too bad that never came to pass. Just 3 months later out-of-town lawyers were hired to scuttle the project, the Friends of Bidwell Park were formed, and a process was begun that would cost massive amounts of taxpayer money. All in an effort to stop improvements anyone in Chico could use. This is in contrast to the very reasonable approach the author of this Sierra Club article suggested. If only we could have followed the direction and leadership of the author! Unfortunately, the reasonable person who penned this article supporting disc golf is none other than Susan Mason, current President of the Friends of Bidwell Park. What a difference a few months make. |

You say "tomato", I say "tomah..er banana?"
BTW: My buick is like the white one except with a hardtop and a big engine. I will meet you at Stuckeys. Too bad they still don't have the one on Interstate 5 between Orland and Willows, because then we wouldn't have to drive across states to meet with our "muscle" cars. ;-)

Mike,
It looks like I'm going to have to get a little tougher with you guys. That is the O's from Google's logo.

After zooming in on it and analyzing it pixel by pixel, I'd have to say it's ketchup and mustard slopped onto the front of a bleached white shirt just before a meeting with an important client, cleverly manipulated in Photoshop to resemble the O's in Google.
That's pretty good Mike. I must concede, you get the Typographical Visually Aware Kind of Guy Award!
That article from the old Yahi Group Newsletter can become a featured attraction in the new Annie Bidwell Disc Golf Museum. Maybe it could get built next door to the Nature Center. The zoning should be OK.

Hi Lon,
Had to revisit this blog to see where you suggested The Sierra Club, "Yahoo" chapter still supports disc golf in upper park. Still not seeing it. Maybe Grace should re-read the blog before blabbing to the editor with her false assumptions. Then again, the free advertisement is great. By my count, you now have 5 readers of this blog. With the help of the Yahoos, your readership is about grow exponentially. Bad news for them, because your blog is informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Sean,
You're now "reader number 5".
I doubt Ms. Marvin actually read this post. And you're right I didn't refer to their current position on disc golf.
I did receive an email from Grace that included the current position of the Sierra Club Yahi Group (as of June 26th 2007). Since it included references to the Friends of Bidwell Park campaign slogan "keep upper park wild", I think they just embarked on some easy "group think". Maybe I'll post it, then again maybe not.
On the other hand their new position is dated June 26th 2007, and the Friends lawyer's letter is dated June 25th, 2007. Maybe they were just afraid they'd be sued if they didn't go along.
