Sherwood Forest In Chico

SHERWOOD_FOREST.jpg
Last night the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission voted unanimously to support a family disc golf course at the Hooker Oak Recreation Area. This follows a vote by CARD's Board last month to accept the project following environmental studies. The commission's vote was the final hurdle in getting approval for Chico's first official disc golf course. The course is small (9 holes) and targets are a short distance away (100'-150'). The course won't be challenging for people that have played a lot, but will be perfect for kids or for a family that wants to get outside for a few hours and have a little fun.

Gregg Payne and I proposed the course on April 10th 2007, after a request from CARD that we do so (see proposal here). There were a few hurdles to the project including the presence of elderberry bushes and concerns from some horse lovers who use an unofficial path to cross where the course will be. Steve Visconti, CARD's General Manager, was able to navigate these issues with his even-keeled management style. CARD has allocated $15,000 for the course. $9,000 is the rough estimate for environmental studies, and some money needs to be spent to address the concerns of equestrians.

Two weeks ago we met with CARD and made our last request related to this project. We wanted to build it for them. CARD's response was "go for it". We'll be coordinating our effort with Jake Preston, CARD's Superintendent. We have formed, and really are still forming, The Outsiders organization to make this project happen (http://www.chico-outsiders.com). In the short term we're going to organize the effort to build this family disc golf course. In the long term we hope to provide support for other outdoor recreation. Park users who mountain bike, disc golf, rock climb, and cardboard slide are sometimes under represented in Chico's public discussions. They need a voice.

The kid's disc golf course is named the Sherwood Forest Family Disc Golf Course (see map here) and will have components that pay homage to the fact the Errol Flynn's Robin Hood was filmed nearby. We are building in low profile artistic tee markers to go with the new basket targets and hope to get interpretive nature signage up as well. Concrete tee pads for throwing have been designed in via the environmental studies, but CARD's Board wanted to hold off on construction of those until the course has had some use.

The Outsiders are discussing a cooperative effort with the Golden Valley Bank Community Foundation to provide a non-profit umbrella for our group. Bank CEO Mark Francis had a positive reaction to the idea. We've successfully solicited the help of a Rotary Team to work on a chunk of the project. We've also been able to wrap an Eagle Scout, Dusty Carr who lives nearby the course site, into the effort. And we've raised $1,000 as a start to matching CARD's cash contribution. We'd like to do more.

We still need funding from the public. Specifically we want to provide discs to kids who want to play. CARD needs some discs for their summer camps, and some local schools could use equipment. So small donations from $10-$50 can help make that happen. Larger sponsor donations of $250+ wouldn't be turned down either.

There are lots of ways people can get involved with The Outsiders and make great, healthy, outside recreation a priority and reality for Chico. Check out our web site (link here), or contact me for more information (here's my Outsiders email).

Way to go Gregg and Lon! This sounds like a great project and it will be nice to have a course closer to town that kids (and their mom's who secretly love the sport) can get to.

You can count me in for some dough in support of outside play. In honor of my daughter, who hopefully will someday be on the Women's Pro-Circuit, I hope you opt for a least a few pink discs!

Again, nice work!

Congrats Lon and Gregg, on the new course.

Hopefully this one won't get sabotaged by irrational concerns.

BTW with that new cell tower going up at Hooker Oak, you may be able to capture some useful energy out of that "dangerous radiation" coming from it.

Perhaps Lon's S^3 widget factory can come up with a disc that has a series of coils on the edge that capture the electromagnetic energy and convert it to electricity, stored in a capacitor, which can power a blinking LED at the center of the disc.

You could play at night then.

Congrats on course. just posted on yesterday's blog not seeing this new entry. Refresh or was on before you had posted. I have been talking with CDGC members and I belive you will have some volunteers for installation. Count me in as one for sure.
Yeah for DG.

Anthony, for night play, just go get the little pill shaped fishing glow-sticks, and then tape one to the bottom of your disc. Works great.

I was surprised to hear about the Outsiders, I actually just joined up. Also, I was surprised for a second when I was browsing the pics and ran across the two I had submitted to you a while back. Forgot I had sent those to you.

Congrat's on the new course! That will be awesome, even just to catch 9 quick holes it would be good practice. Better than the basket at the children's park... I'm always afraid my disc would end up in Esplanade when I go there to throw.

Is that Nottingham castle? I am really proud of you guys, and I am very interested in sponsoring a hole for the business where I work, Crete Design.... I also have an abundance of spare plastic and would love to donate some for the kids.... Let me know when the first work day is... I want to stay involved....

Yea! Way to go Lon and Gregg! Wait a minute, that's me. I must be dreaming. More like deja vu. Another unanimous approval of disc golf in Bidwell Park.

This one is a win win win win....There's something here for everyone.

Moms, dads and little kids get an easy accessible place to play outdoors.

CARD gets an example of a very affordable facility for a popular recreational activity.

The Friends get a much needed positive public relations gesture of something to support just after their failed cell antenna lawsuit against the City and CARD.

The elderberry beetles still have lots of elderberry bushes for their larvae to eat holes through.

We get something encouraging to show for thousands of hours of work over the last ten years.

Nice website Lon! (Cool name and logo too.)

Now I need to get busy and have some kids so I can go play with them out there.

Lon and Gregg,

Thank you so much for your perseverance and vision that has contributed to making this a reality for Chicoans. I've always been terrible at any sport (no coordination whatsoever) and disc golf is the only thing that I've been able to play ...and I play it regularly now with my nephews. It's kind of magic because they think we are just going to play a sport, but we get to see lizards, woodpeckers, cool rocks, flowers, etc., and they notice all of it. We talk about science, which leads to conversations about their lives and their observations of life, etc. ...and they think we are just playing disc golf the whole time.
Disc golf is more than a sport. It's an experience that is far healthier than I imagined until I played it. I'm really thankful that kids who are stuck in front of video games, computers and televisions will be able to ride their bikes or walk to a disc golf course in town, and that there is finally enough support for a sport that is affordable and accessible to the many (no uniforms, no expensive dirt bikes, no soccer shoes needed ...just a disk under $10).
Way to go guys! And thank you to CARD for taking the lead on this. And, I absolutely love the Sherwood Forest theme (Robin Hood and Gregg are my two greatest heros.)

We should have a party for Lon and Gregg. Could hire clowns, and a bounce house, and I'll do my famous smoked ribs. Someone got a big backyard where we can setup a couple portable disc golf baskets?

Anthony,

Thanks.

We'll be playing disc golf at Sherwood Forest with tin-foil caps. What's really strange is that that has nothing to do with the new cell equipment.

Withanee,

Pink discs it is. Maybe we can get some made with a Barbie Shopping Frenzy Charge Card motif. Or maybe not.

Steve B.

That sounds great. It looks like the installation should be pretty easy. We've got a volunteer with a bobcat and auger, concrete mixer, generator, and trailer, and right now we're only drilling around 20 holes.

We really need people to come down on opening day with their families. That should be in March. And a donation of $20 can get golf discs to 4 kids. I would love for local kids and schools to have the discs so they can play whenever they want.

Trevor,

You're an insider-Outsider now. And I definitely used your photos because I liked that they were not your average disc golf photo (guy throwing - kid holding disc).

Gregg and I have been kicking around this stuff for a little while, but CARD's help in getting a course approved was a catalyst to get our hiney's moving.

Disc golf is easy, cheap, sustainable, and healthy. There's no reason that it shouldn't be enjoyed by everyone.

Don't forget there are three good baskets at Oak Way Park. Thanks again go out to CARD. See http://www.chico-outsiders.com/TheOutsiders/discgolf.cfm for directions etc.

This summer there will be some Outsider BBQ's. There's some baskets at Oak Way about 3 blocks from my house, and a pool in my back yard. It's going to be a disc golf summer, and you and your ribs are invited.

Mark B.,

Thanks for supporting disc golf. Email me for info on sponsoring. Extra discs are good (and we'll take them) but we really do need the small cash donations to get some custom discs out to kids. We want putters and logos, to spread the word. A $5 donation gets a disc for some kid in Chico.

Gregg,

It is a win win win win. And the name and logo are very cool. You can borrow my kids... on a Saturday night... when my wife and I go to the movies.

Jennifer O.

I tried to pull off a Robin Hood - Captain America theme but couldn't make it happen. Gregg's put in a lot of time supporting his "poles of destruction", so he's my hero too.

But can he do "The Squirrel"... only time will tell.

Yeah I remembered those after I posted up that message. I used to go to Children's park because I used to live 3 blocks from it and I didn't have a car, just a skateboard.

Today's CIC will be a picture of a bowie knife, or perhaps a double edged switchblade knife

ah rats. You missed the City Council Meeting
