Video Of Helicopter Nearly Crashing On Take Off (No One Gets Hurt)

This helicopter can't get the lift it needs to take off from this barge and nearly crashes. The crew members on the ship are hoping they don't get sliced in half.  Their prayers were answered because everyone was safe, although I am sure they needed to change their underwear.  At least I believe that the pilot, and the guy on the pad cringing in the fetal position, probably needed clean shorts.

This phenomena is normally something that happens in really hot weather but can happen in really cold as well, similar to situations like that experienced by the pilot in the video. In really low barometric pressure situations a rotary wing aircraft cannot achieve the lift necessary to fly. Military instructors want pilots to experience such phenomena during training, so the pilots will be taken to areas where the conditions will be experienced. Each pilot is then told to attempt take off so they will not be caught off guard when not happens to them.

As in the all branches of the service, trainees are always put into as many situations as possible so that if they ever face such a problem they will be prepared. In this case the conditions that caused the pilot in the video below must be repeated somehow during training so that when a pilot is confronted with such a situation, the military will not lose a pilot and crew. The pilot did what he had to in an effort to save himself, his crew and his aircraft once he realized he couldn't achieve air speed. From the looks of the seas in the video, they probably entered a low pressure area while he was on the deck. After what he went through he probably had to ride out the storm in the pilot shack.

Thanks to Ernest Fowler for the information above

Also check out the links below to other videos I posted this past week week. I promise you will enjoy them just as much this one.

That should have been the last time that pilot was allowed to TOUCH that aircraft.

I am betting he wonders why he wanted to be a helicopter pilot.

This is only the second time I have seen this happen. The first was when I was in the US Army attending rotary wing flight school in '69. Just so happened that we were learning about the effects of low air pressure weather systems on rotary wing aircraft. This phenomena is normally something that happens in really hot weather but can happen in really cold as well, similar to situations like that experienced by the pilot in the video. Our instructors wanted us to experience the phenomena for ourselves and took us out one afternoon in really hot weather (think Mineral Wells, TX, hot) that was so stagnant that it seemed we couldn't get enough air to breathe. Each of us attempted to take off and experienced what you saw in that video above. And yes, it is frightening enough to make you a Believer if you weren’t before. In really low barometric pressure situations a rotary wing aircraft cannot achieve the lift necessary to fly. The pilot did what he had to in an effort to save himself, his crew and his aircraft once he realized he couldn't achieve air speed. From the looks of the seas in the video, they probably entered a low pressure area while he was on the deck. After what he went through he probably had to ride out the storm in the pilot shack.

Thanks for the information Ernest. I am going to update my post to reflect the information you offered for others who will as appreciative as I am.

About Me: I am a born again Christian who enjoys talking religion and politics. I have always believed that it is the Christian's obligation to understand the workings of our government as well as they do the precepts of God. Jesus tells us to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves". (Mark 10:16) So it is with this understanding that I approach life. I was born in the Midwest, and while I may have grown up in Northern Minnesota, I have earned my degree in knowledge and understanding from the many regions of America and Europe that I have either lived in or visited as an adult.
