First off, this was compiled Tuesday for the most part, so the records are likely off by one game.
Second off, we've got some great possibilities in the girls' realm for the postseason. Let's waste no more time here, except to say that you can find basketball playoff points by clicking here.
And here are two notes about the basketball playoffs that many people might not know. First is that there is no Division I in the Northern Section because enrollment figures are provided by CIF and we just don’t have massive schools up here. Second, just about everybody makes the playoffs (unlike volleyball), so teams like the Pierce girls (1-14) and the Modoc boys (1-20) can still qualify.
Now here’s the info:
DIVISION II GIRLS: There are no D-II playoff points — they just use the Eastern Athletic League standings because every D-II team is in the EAL. So this makes things interesting because Enterprise and Paradise are in the top four but are D-III.
Pleasant Valley (8-1 EAL) is atop the group and Chico High (7-2) is second, and the two do battle Thursday at CHS. Yes, it will be an amazing game, and needless to say, will have major playoff implications. Foothill (4-5) was a very dangerous team earlier in the year but injuries have slowed the Cougars down and they are extremely vulnerable.
Shasta (3-6) is a young team that might be a big factor next year but not likely to shock anyone this year. Red Bluff (0-9) is just plain dreadful.
DIVISION III GIRLS: I was slightly surprised — emphasis on slightly — that Enterprise (15-6) is ranked No. 1 ahead of Las Plumas (20-2). Maxpreps.com has LP above everyone in the section regardless of division.
Here are the two reasons why the Hornets should be ahead and are: They play in the EAL with a 7-2 mark, and LP’s opponents in the Butte View League are lackluster, to say the least. LP is last in strength of schedule.
The Hornets are a great team and Ravien Lawson is one of the best natural athletes I’ve seen in a few years up here. They are a well-coached team, too, as Tina Hill always has them competitive.
LP, meanwhile, has Angelica Cahee running the show, and for my buck, she’s the most exciting female player up here this year. Lael Schneider is also a good coach who has fileded competitive teams. LP beat Enterprise by 10 in a tournament matchup earlier this year, and in my opinion is the better team, regardless of what the mathematical functions spit out.
But don’t just pencil these teams in for the title game. No. 3 Paradise (14-6, 6-3 EAL) is an extremely dangerous team that can boast victories over PV and LP, something nobody else can say. The Bobcats also took Chico to overtime last week before losing. Terrianne Brown’s team can beat anybody when they play great — you just don’t know when they’re going to turn on that switch.
Oroville, which was second in the division last year, is last (aka: sixth) in 2009. The Tigers (5-16, 1-8 EAL) trail Lassen in fifth and West Valley at fourth.
DIVISION IV GIRLS: It’s all about the Northern Athletic League in this crowd, a shame to me because we publish from a more central and eastern locale, thus we don’t get to see too many NAL battles.
Central Valley is on top with Corning right behind, and then Yreka is tied for third with Gridley, a BVL team. But Corning could easily be atop all of it because the Cardinals beat CV 63-53 earlier this year. CV is 17-3, 6-1 in the NAL while Corning is 15-4, 6-0 in league play. Gridley is 10-8 overall and Yreka came in at 8-6.
This looks like a field of the top three, and then a bunch of average to above-average teams from that point down. Willows is a solid team in fifth place, and has the unfortunate stigma of playing in the Sacramento Valley League, a far cry from the more-competitive NAL. Orland is sixth and the Trojans (9-11) are 8-7 against teams in Div. IV, which likely won’t cut it against CV and Corning, which are 9-1 in the division. Still, Orland isn’t that bad.
DIVISION V GIRLS: Just like in volleyball, Durham and Hamilton are outstanding teams in the upper echelon. Hamilton ended the Trojans’ season in the Northern Section semifinals in the fall, but now the opportunity for revenge is alive and well for Durham, this time in basketball. The Trojans are the top team in the rankings with a 17-3 mark and the Braves are second with a 19-3 mark.
Not much else after that.
DIVISION VI GIRLS: Champion Christian has a very good basketball team, with a 17-6 mark overall and an 11-3 record in the division. The only problem for the No. 3 Mustangs is that No. 2 Hayfork (17-6) already beat them and Butte Valley is a perfect 15-0.
But I say don't let Champion escape your view. Butte Valley is fifth in strength of schedule, and the D-VI bracket is one of the tougher ones up here simply because there are 19 teams in the division.
