People keep wondering if any Democrats will show up to run in the Republican heavy districts in northern California.
Well let me be the one to break the news; two of them have showed up.
Julie Griffith-Flatter and Bob Meacher.
These two brave souls are going to play an important role in the next election.
Because of the open primary system Democrats in Northern California used to have more or less no say in who got to go to the legislature.
Now for the first time Democrats will be able to vote in the Republican primary. So if no Democrat runs, a Republican could get moderate Republicans and some moderate Democrats to form a new type of coalition. In the past the Democrat candidate would run to the left and the Republican candidate would run to the right because only members of their party were voting in the primary. Now each party can mess with the other.
I cannot overstate how big of a deal this is going to be. If you have a race where there are no Democrats that means that in the November general election when you get your ballot there will be a Republican versus a Republican. In Democrat strong holds you will have a Democrat versus a Democrat.
Julie Griffith-Flatter works for the Sierra Conservancy. She Is Running for Senate District 4. She is running against Senator Ted Gaines.
Bob Meacher is a county supervisor in Plumas County. He Is Running for Assembly District 1. In District 1 there is no Incumbent.

So far no Democrats from Butte County.

If I am not mistaken, isn't Ted Gaines running in Senate District 1? District 4 is LaMalfa's Seat, and if he wins his congressional bid, Jim Nielsen has announced he is running for that seat. It is widely believed that Assemblyman Dan Logue will run in that election as well, which will be a special election. So is Julie Griffith-Flatter running in Ditrict 4 or 1? If it is District 4, coes that mean she is assuming Doug Lamalfa will win for congress
