Born in December

Each year as we get close to Thanksgiving, I can't help but reflect on what the holiday's mean to me. For me, they mean that I am getting older because my birthday is in December. That's not to say that I expect, or even want for that matter, any special attention on my birthday. In fact, I'd just as soon nobody even mention it. And in my family, they don't. That's because about half of the people in my extended family have birthdays that fall between Thanksgiving and New Years. Around twenty to thirty of us actually. Literally there is a birthday everyday during this period, sometimes two a day, as it is with me and my grand niece Danielle.

We have all learned early on the harsh reality of what it means to be a Sagittarius in our family. Between the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Christmas, and the fact that there are so many other birthdays going on, you are lucky to get a phone call from a relative wishing you happy birthday, much less a birthday party! I've even seen parties get doubled up! I see the logic in this because if your birthday is on a Thursday, and your party is planned for Saturday, by Saturday there's been two other birthdays happen, so why not bunch a few together. Those are the lucky one's. In my family, birthday parties in December are rare.

But really, that whole party thing only affects you when your young. I find that as I get older, being born in December is more of a blessing because I really don't need the recognition that I'm getting older than the effing mountains! I am happy to be lost in the maze of December birthdays.

So I would like to take this opportunity to wish a "blanket happy birthday", cover them all in one shot, to all of my unfortunate relatives who happen to be born during the holidays. Happy birthday Terri, Janice, Becky, Steve, Scott, Juan, Angel, Dylan....pausing to take a breath....Damien, Danny, Jennifer, Isabell, Danielle....oh screw it, you know who you are.

It's no wonder that some of the Sagittarian traits are flexibility as well as being tough as nails. We need it. We're born during the holidays!

About Me: I am a baby boomer and a true product of the sixties. Although a lot of great ideals came out of that era, my generation made a lot of mistakes as well. I have tried to take the best of those ideals, as well as the lessons learned from my life experiences along the way, and hone them into a philosophy that gives me direction and purpose. This philosophy of mine is a witless blend of one part liberal, two parts practical, and three parts spiritual, mixed with just enough dry humor....to make you want to puke. This wouldn't be such a terrible thing if it weren't for the fact that I like to write. But I do. I hope you enjoy.
