California 5th dumbest State in the Union
California now ranks among the dumbest states in the union according to latest study.
41. Tennessee
42. Hawaii
43. Alabama
44. Alaska
45. Louisiana
46. California
47. Nevada
48. New Mexico
49. Mississippi
50. Arizona
"These are the 2005-2006 findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by Morgan Quitno Press of hundreds of public school systems in all 50 states. States were graded on 21 factors, including student achievement and attendance, positive outcomes, strong student-teacher relationships and school district efficiency. Other factors are the number of high school graduates, reading, writing and math proficiency, percent of school-age kids in public schools, high school drop out rates, student-teacher ratios and class size.
The Smartest State Award recognizes those states that are committed to students and teachers, emphasize excellence in the classroom and ensure that public elementary and secondary schools are efficiently-run," said Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press. "Vermont shines in many key areas of education. A high percentage of its students excel in reading, writing and math. In addition, schools in Vermont have smaller class sizes and lower pupil-teacher ratios than in most other states."

4th Dumbest?
Are you a product of California Public education? I am, and I can count, to 5 at least.
Better make that 5th dumbest, while obviously vying for 4th by those that are counting challenged.
1st 50. Arizona
2nd 49. Mississippi
3rd 48. New Mexico
4th 47. Nevada
5th 46. California

It was a typo that led to the error. Even us bumkins in Chico can count beyond 5....7 or 8 may be stretch, but we got 5 down pretty good.
Thank you for helping to keep this site accurate.

I can see making the correction if we were talking about 4th or 5th from the top LOL. I can laugh, I new when my daughter was starting school, it takes commitment from involved parents to make the most of education.
I believe we have the 5th worst parents in the Country. Our kids are offered all the tools they need to achieve an adequate education.
Good parenting is a generational thing. If your parents were responsible and cared, you will be responsible and care, your kids will do fine. They will grow to be responsible, caring parents with kids who turn out fine.
It isn't coincidental that California is a socialist welfare state with extreme liberal ideas of how to educate and raise children while also being the 5th worst state for education. It doesn't take money to have values or be responsible. It doesn't take a college education to be a responsible parent. I am living breathing proof of this, you just need your head screwed on straight. Keep your eyes and ears open, your mouth shut and listen to your gut.

I can't help but think the large minority population in each of those states had an impact on the results. Let's face it, CA, NM, AZ are on the border. However, I am surprised Texas was not on the list. Every socio-economic study I have read has one nexus. A high minority population. Example: Take test scores from Chico, say 10 years ago, and compare them to last years scores. California has seen an explosion in immigration and U.S. births from illegal residents.
