A Mans View

Excerted from the article by Jordan Stein, Lifestyle Commentator at Askmen.com 17 things men hate that women love:

1. Bathroom junk Loofahs, potpourri and peppermint foot scrub exfoliant spiked with Shea butter are among the products the fairer sex like to stick in their bathrooms to the detriment of the world's water supply. Give us a toothbrush and some soap and we're good. It's a woman's need for excess that drives us to the brink.

2. Shopping If you are a frequent flier of AskMen.com's Fashion section, I can safely assume you like to shop just as much as she does. But being dragged along on one of her sprees just so she can try on every garment in the store and solicit your input on whether or not they make her ass look like oatmeal is one hell of a tedious proposition.

3. Talking Women are constantly prodding men for affirmation. Because most guys are comparatively aloof, holding little gab sessions allows women to ascertain "where things are going." This might not be so bad if it weren't for the fact that women pick the most inopportune moments to pry open your mental safe (i.e. directly following sex and/or during something obscure and interesting on the History Channel).

4. Sleepovers Nothing puts a smile on her face quite like the prospect of warming your bed like a Dutch oven. They snore, squirm and generally rob you of an otherwise perfectly good night's sleep. Love's so not the point when they wake up rested and you wake up red-eyed and groggy.

5. Crying Guys prefer not to cry, the exception being a broken bone or downed satellite dish. But women know something we don't; crying makes you feel better. So good , in fact, that they do it all the time. Like strung-out addicts, they need that feel-good fix and will cry three, four, five times a day just to get it. And dare I mention the ability of tears to guilt men into jumping through hoops of fire...

6. Cosmo quizzes Ever pick up a copy of your girlfriend's Cosmopolitan ? That publication is racy enough to rival Hustler . Doing its quizzes about oral sex and menstruation, or some other sordid topic, is, mystifyingly, a guilty pleasure for many women. Maybe it's because we fancy our women pristine that their lewd magazine quizzes make us squirm.

7. Shoes Women place so much stock in footwear, but with so much else to look at, when was the last time you took a gander at a woman's feet? In fact, unless you're ready for your big debut on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy , the first time you'll notice her Manolo Blahniks is when they're at the foot of your bed. Sneakers and dress shoes have always done us right, so why do women have to go and complicate things?

8. Family get-togethers They can be okay as long as it's your family that's getting together. We seem to have a natural aversion to spending time with her family tree. Man versus in-law is a theme as old as time. No sense trying to explain it: we're just wired that way.

Growing up Stupid...

Patricia Beeman writes, "I want to mention how important it is for parents to be involved in their children's education. Start young, teach them the basics...how to read, to count, to spell their name.

By the time they enter Kindergarden, they are prepared. Parents! You are your child's best teacher. So it should be no surprise that parents should be very actively involved in what their child is being taught at school..."

Growing up Stupid in America

The liberals will say you can fix anything with money, but is that really true? Over the past 20 years, adjusted for inflation, we've effectively doubled what we spend on public education and it's done absolutely nothing for the students academically. Test scores have flatlined and in some regions of the country we've regressed.

California spends among the top of all states, a bit over $10,000 per student, but we rank near the bottom of our peers. Meanwhile private schools have proven you can take students from the same area where we have failing public schools and teach them for about 50% less and achieve better results! Something is very wrong with the system folks and we better do something to fix it, before we are in a crisis. Some would say we already are in that crisis, we just haven't felt the full effect yet.

On the world stage, its the same story, the United States is peforming poorly compared to other advanced nations Our kids are no where near as well educated as their counterparts in Europe and Japan. You have to go to third world countries before we start being somewhat competitive!

"In what could be an ominous sign for the U.S. tech industry, American universities slipped lower in an international programming contest."

"SPRINGFIELD, Missouri--January 10, 2004--The Standards In Economics Survey conducted for the National Council on Economic Education found that on average, American adults get a grade of 57% for their knowledge of basic economics while high school students' average score was 48%." sife.org

We must start asking the hard questions. Why are we failing to teach our students? Is it the system, have we lowered the bar too low? Is this in part due to illegal immigration - too many non-english speaking students with low aptitude flooding the system? Is it a result of too many poor teachers kept on through tenure? Should we be diverting some students toward trade schools? Has the Teacher's Union got in the way of education? There are so many question we need to ask and ask now!

Go to the net, seach key words like "failing, students, USA" or "USA schools rank poorly" and you get things like this, "The gap between America's best readers and its worst is wider than in any other country, according to results released last week from the OECD's Program for International Student Assessment, which assessed 15-year-olds' reading skills, mathematical abilities, and scientific knowledge. While that gap between high and low scorers is not as pronounced in math and science, it is still greater for the United States than for most of the nations in the study." Readingrockets.org

The United States now ranks a mere 23rd among the worlds most developed democracies and we're not improving, but they are! Where will this lead us in another 20 or 30 years?

A documentary you ought to see: Jan. 13, 2006 — "Stupid in America" is a nasty title for a program about public education, but some nasty things are going on in America's public schools and it's about time we face up to it.

Kids at New York's Abraham Lincoln High School told me their teachers are so dull students fall asleep in class. One student said, "You see kids all the time walking in the school smoking weed, you know. It's a normal thing here." John Stossel presents a compelling view of public education in America that every concerned parent or taxpayer ought to see.

If anyone would like a copy of the ABC News story, Stupid in America, I only have 3 available, so its a case of first come first served.

Mission Accomplished DVD Player Donated

If you are a frequent reader, you know I rarely make requests for special needs donations, but I am pleased to say when I have, YOU folks have always stepped up and helped those in need. You have graciously sent cards, letters and packages of food snacks to a group of heroic Marines putting their lives on the line in Numaniyah. Most recently one of our people has again stepped up to fill a need. This time it was for Air Museum's request for a DVD player.

You all deserve a special thanks for your generosity, but I would like to give a special thanks to Chico's favorite weatherman, Mr. Anthony Watts. He's been incredibly generous and done so much to help others long before this column was even an idea. I can't thank him enough for the DVD player and many gifts for the Marines!

CHICO AIR MUSEUM

Currently open to the public, free of charge from 10 am till 4 pm, Saturdays. Located at the Chico Airport, 170 Convair Avenue. Call 345-6468 for more information on events.

If you haven't taken yourself or your kids to see the exhibits, then I have one question: Why not? It's fun, it's free, it's educational and who-in-the-heck doesn't like airplanes? Besides, the Chico Museum has pretty unique displays that you just won't find anywhere else, like the Russian Antonov An-2, the worlds largest commercially built biplane or the extremely rare Super Ventura a twin engine airplane from the 1950's, not to mention many in-door exhibits.

DVD Player needed! Currently the staff is trying to setup two video displays using a VHS and DVD player working through two monitors. They are still looking for a DVD player, anyone have a DVD player to donate?

UPCOMING EVENT: Special guest speaker, Historian and Museum Currator, Gary Thompson, will be presenting the story of the Spruce Goose, the world's largest seaplane, at Mathew's Cafe located in the Almond Orchard Mall, Chico, 02/07/06 at 7 p.m. It's free and open to the public.

Desk of Air Legend Jimmy Doolittle

a4.jpg
One of the most interesting exhibits at the Chico Air Museum is this beautiful piece of furniture. It is the actual desk of WWII Army Air Corp General Jimmy Doolittle. As most of you over the age of 40 know, Gen. Doolittle won the Congressional Medal of Honor for leading the bombing raid on Tokyo in April of 1942 using B-25 Mitchell bombers launched from the deck of a carrier, a feat never done before or since.

A Japanese picket vessel spotted them and sent a radio message warning of the carrier's approach. The bombers were forced to take to the air 200 miles further out than expected. This left them without enough fuel to reach their intended landing areas; most of the crews had to bail out over China and make their way to American lines.

Aircraft On Display

A2.jpg
Shown here is a Russian Antonov biplane, donated to the museum in 2003. The Antonov was a work horse utility type aircraft often used with ski's to ferry supplies to remoted region such as Siberia. In the US it's a been a favorite of skydivers because of it's load capacity and relatively slow airspeed.

In addition to the An-2, there is a Yak 51, Russian trainer, the famous P2V "Neptune" sub chaser used throughout the 1960's till the late 80's and a rare Howard Super Ventura used for civilian transport and antisubmarine warfare in the 1950's.

Money and Elections...

money1.gif
It seems like if you're not independently rich or beholding to the special interest groups who fund most elections, you're likely not going to win.

Political idealism, creativity and integrity are rarely the keys to success when it comes to high office. But, I can't blame the voters, least not much. They are manipulated by rhetoric that slick spinmasters devise to control what they (voters) get to see and hear.

Unless a voter is truly interested (few are anymore) and they have the time to dig into the facts, read independant news sources and seek out the truth, then they have to make do with the pablum they're fed by the partisans and biased news sources.

What Is Soft Money and Why Should you Care?

You've no doubt heard the phrase "soft money" on the news one time or another. It's a popular theme in politics these days, but, do you really know what it means? You should, soft money is a key element in the Abramoff scandal.

Soft Money is usually a large amount of cash, too large to be accepted by a politician without violating the federal election code. So, it is diverted to one or more allied groups to be spent on the politicians election or re-election, usually buying radio and TV ads by a political action committee (PAC) or the candidates political party, moreover it is a PAC that spends the money. In theory, to be legal the politician must not have any connection to how this money is spent, in practice we often find go-betweens used to communicate candidates wishes or how his campaign manager feels is the most effective way to buy the election while allowing the candidate to maintain a safe distance and seem aboveboard.

According to Opensecrets.org, Representative John Shadegg-R, AZ., who is now running for House Majority Leader to replace embattled Tom Delay, received over $1,920,000 or 46% of his total campaign warchest from PACs. 95% of that money was received from business, $4500 from labor (unions). Compare that to Representative Nancy Pelosi-D, CA, who received 93.7% of her campaign warchest from PACs and only 6.7% from individuals. Labor contributed $148,500 or 64% of her total from PACs*.

In Senate races, 85% were won by those who spent the most, however in races without an encumbent it seems the party affiliation had more to do with outcome. 'The Center for Voting and Democracy recently released "Monopoly Politics," a comprehensive analysis of U.S. House elections. In reviewing open seat elections without incumbents -- perhaps the best measure of money's impact -- the Center found a far stronger correlation between the party of the winning candidate and how that district voted in the presidential race than relative campaign spending. Over one-third of Republican winners in open seat races in 1996 were outspent by Democrats. But not a single one represents a district where Bill Clinton won at least 50% of votes cast."

Prior to 2000, the FEC data shows almost 92% of all elections were won by the candidate who spends the most.

NOTE: PAC contributions to our local Representative Wally Herger-R, CA amounted to over $102,000 or about 45% of his total and almost 95% of that came from business. Rep. Herger maintains a huge reserve of over $626,000 to serve notice would-be challengers are in for an expensive fight and if they can't outspend him, they will probably lose.

*Records obtained from the FEC for the 2005-2006 cycle.

Indians Equally Guilty

Cynical Dan writes, "I seem to be the only one who has noticed that there is another side to the Abramoff scandal that is being completely overlooked. If we are considering the "campaign contributions" of the various Indian tribes as bribes in disguise, paid with the expectation of favorable legislation on tribal gaming, then why are the Indians not equally guilty? If what Abramoff did is take the money and then double cross the tribes by not passing it on to the crooked legislators, or if the legislators took the money but did not do what the tribes wanted, then the tribes are still guilty of attempted bribery. If Abramoff kept some of the money for himself, he would still not be guilty of fraud, since a contract to commit an illegal act (bribery) is not enforceable.

However, because the Indians are a sacred cow in our culture, you will never see Abramoff or any legislators charged with bribery in this case, since it takes two sides for a bribe to occur. What you will see are indirect charges, like lying to the government, not reporting income, and falsifying financial documents.

The bribes disguised as campaign contributions will continue to flow, regardless of the various "reforms" being suggested. All they will do is require a better disguise. All polititians take bribes, and the Indians are only one of many different bribers.

Harry Reid Took The Money

Sen. Harry Reid has been prancing around like some moral inquisitor over this Jack Abramoff scandal, but in reality he is a suspect in his own so-called influence peddling investigation.

1. Harry Reid received $6,500 from Abramoff's associates at Greenberg Taurig, a law and lobbying firm, from 1999 through 2004.

2. Reid received $40,500 from Indian Tribes that were clients of Abramoff, some indications put this closer to $66,000 in total.

It should be clear to anyone, even a liberal under the influence of their own opiate... Reid took money from Abramoff! What should be even more telling that he took the money is Reid's admission that he isn't giving any of it back! lol

Harry Reid Appologizes

Minority Leader, Sen. Harry Reid gets face time with media as he places his hands over his heart and offers up a contrived appology to the GOP, saying his report on "Republican Abuses of Power" went too far! Reid's report missed the part where in the history of the Senate there were 14 Democrats expelled verses 1 Republican. Censured senators number 9, 4 were Republican.

Iran Threatens to Crush USA and Isreal

"Iran has warned of a "crushing" response if its nuclear and military facilities are attacked by the United States or Israel, AP reported."In the same story, "Iran's ultraconservative president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, described Israel as a "disgraceful blot" that should be "wiped off the map" and called for it to be moved to Europe or North America."

The question now is what will liberal Democrats offer to appease Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? Perhaps they will offer up Nevada for nuclear testing or maybe just give em Nevada? Afterall, it is the home of Sen. Harry Reid and that symbolic jesture would no doubt endear Reid even further to his Islamo-facist friends.

The Democratic leadership and their liberal stooges know and has said repeatedly we can't win the war against terrorism, heck in their eyes we can't even win the war in Iraq! They know it's all Bush's fault too, because they tell us he is the worst leader in the history of the world, far worse than Hitler, far worse than Stalin and let's not even get started on what they think of Haliburton!

The libs are convinced the only the chance we have is to try to get along and don't do anything to upset anyone, and what better way to show their sincerity than to roll over and surrender to every enemy demand.

On a lesser note, other brilliant liberal leaders, like Ray Nagin, knows and has stated openly to the media that God was punishing America by sending "hurricane after hurricane" on America because God didn't like the Iraq war. Apparently Nagin stays in close contact with God and has appointed himself as God's spokesman, deposing the Pope.

Following Nagin's logic, maybe God doesn't like Ray Nagin since He sent the biggest hurricane right at Nagin first...just a thought.

Would Bomb Iran's Nuke Plant Now

A post from Toby S. ..... "I think we should sit back and let the UN deal with Iran. We should also make it very clear that if Iran even twitches funny we will melt them into glass.

This all sounds like pre Iraq all over again. We ALL saw what was going on and the UN ignored it, Clinton ignored it and then President Bush took clear decisive action and is being crucified for it.
I say let the liberals deal with Iran. When it all goes boom, they will still say Bush is at fault.

I am kidding, we need to stomp those reactors and other facilities flat! As with Iraq, action has got to be taken sooner not later. The UN can not be allowed to deal with this."

Osama Threatens, Then Offers Truce

A tape now believed to be that of Bin Laden said, "It's only a matter of time," referring to Al Qaeda plans going forward to attack the United States. However, he also offered a long-term truce proposal to "rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan." Experts believe Bin Laden made the tape shortly after the missile strike that killed 2 senior members of Al-Qaeda and the son-in-law of the group's second leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri. Among the dead was an Egyptian chemist that has been training terrorists in bomb making.

One thing is clear, Bin Laden is living in fantasy land if he thinks any nation is going to negotiate with him, let alone the United States. The fact that Bin Laden only released an audio tape is also suspect, some feel he is probably too ill to be seen on television. The timing of this tape seems to be a weak effort to shore up morale in Al Qaeda's faltering ranks that have been suffering horrendous losses in recent months.

Ground Zero?

Bushehr - Reactor Construction Site

"The focus of a considerable amount of controversy in the United States, the nuclear facility at Brushehr, Iran is being built under an agreement between the Russian and Iranian governments for $800-million. Although originally intended to be the location of a German-built reactor in the 1970s, the new reactor will be built to Russian designs, though the original reactor buildings exterior appearance will remain essentially the same.

There are two reactor buildings at Bushehr, on the left is Unit I, which is in an advanced stage of completion, Unit II on the right has not been worked on for some time and is not currently scheduled to be completed.

The German designs call for the building between the two units to contain workshops, stores, a water treatment plant, laboratory, welfare rooms, as well as the diesel emergency generators for Unit I."

Time is running out and the UN pressure on Iran seems to have no effect. Don't be surprised if this facility taken out by an Isreali strike in the very near future.

Movie Praises Suicide Bombers

"Paradise Now"... won a Golden Globe Award for best foreign film. The movie presents the warm and fuzzy side of two Palestinian suicide bombers. The New York Times reported, the film "risks offending viewers in the same way that humanizing Hitler does. Entertainment Weekly, praises the movie for, for “the dignity bestowed on a pair of Palestinian suicide bombers.

The innocent targets of these bombers (Israeli civilians) are portrayed in a way that leaves them dehumanized. Throughout the movie Israel is vilified as an evil occupation force of the Palestinian homeland that must be destroyed.

The Golden Globe award paves the way for an Academy Award. I'm sure Hollywood will give this propaganda film top honors. I'm just surprised it wasn't Michael Moore making it.

Iran Friendly to CNN

The following two stories both appeared in an Iranian online paper on the same page. So, this is Iran's version of creating a friendly media? lol These is one bizzare country.

TEHRAN, Jan. 16--Culture Minister Mohammad Hossein Saffar-Harandi said on Monday his ministry seeks to create a media friendly atmosphere.

TEHRAN, Jan. 16--“...in view of its distortion of the president’s remarks on Saturday, the CNN’s Tehran office will be closed until further notice!“

Now, aren't you glad you live in America?

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

This is the second and final week in a continuing series titled, Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline. Sometimes we are talking about American, but it doesn't necessarily have to be about the USA. We're just doing a little critical thinking on a very important subject. If you would like to contribute to this, please send me your comments and I will post them.

Posted by Post Scripts at 11:04 AM | Comments (0)

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

More warning signs.....Laws, laws and more laws does not make a society more moral, rather it is a sign the society is becoming less moral.

"When morality is strong fewer laws are needed," Os Guinness.

Another way of looking at this is to say, "You can't legislate morality." This is such a simple concept, yet so profound in its consequences. We began as a humble Christian nation, with very clear ideals and aspirations that took us to great wealth. After living with that wealth for a number of decades it seems we've devolved into a lesser nation, at least morally.

Have we become a culture of cheaters? We see cheating in 50% of marriages (our most famous example is Bill Clinton), cheating on exams (40% of students admit to cheating) and we've seen the cheating scandals at our most prestigious institutions from Harvard to West Point. I don't know about you, but I don't want a surgeon working on me because he cheated his way through Harvard anymore than I want to fly with a pilot who cheated on his FAA exams.

There is far too much cheating at far too many levels, especially in business. Corporate scandals have become common place, Enron, Tyco, CMS Energy, Global Crossing, ICOM to name a few and then there are the accounting companies who were suppose to be the watch dogs, cheating because they were in collusion with the cheaters! Less than 3% of big businesses are caught criminally bending the rules, but I suspect its more like 50%, it might even be 100% if you include cheating on taxes and that all comes from the motivation to succeed by any means necessary. Of course these are only the "headlines" we see that involve cheating, but what about those lesser acts of cheating such as work place thefts, resume padding, electronic piracy, copyright violations, insurance fraud and even scientific research fraud? We have no way of knowing, but we can probably safely say it happens far more than it should and it takes a heavy toll on our society.

When we catch a company like Enron cheating we try to fix it by tightening up the rules, but it never seems to work in the long run. Yet, we foolishly keep trying to close the doors on immoral conduct this way. I suspect no amount of legislation will ever force moral conduct when its done completely absent the moral authority of a higher power. Oddly, liberals keep extolling the virtues of removing that "higher moral authority" from our culture while thier world crumbles around them and they haven't a clue why.

There are many factors to motivating bad moral/ethical choices, but in the broadest sense, you might well argue that it's this absence of a spiritual basis that is at the core cheating. Those spiritual needs found in our heritage have been slowly replaced with material needs. That part seems to be a good portion of the current problem we have in this country with moral behavior. When people and families live modestly, they tend to also live more morally. When people acquire great wealth, their temptations are many, it's easy to be self indulgent when you can afford it.

"Character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught." ~J.C. Watts

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

More warning signs.... Society becomes heavily dependant on government to meet their basic needs. During the depression the homeless relied on friends and relatives. Others simply cut back on whatever they could and made do with what they had. Community churches sponsored free kitchens and temporary shelter.

It was not until the country was well on its way to emerging out of depression that Roosevelt inacted the "New Deal" which had been largely crafted by the previous administration. Roosevelt started many public works projects and employed many of the nations poor, and it certainly helped in the recovery, although that form of socialism is mistakenly touted by many as what "saved" us. Well, it wasn't. Ingenuity, creativity, thrift, hard work and traditional family values, all common in America at that time, deserve the bulk of credit.

Compare those depression days to now. We see 3rd and 4th generations on welfare. When a disaster happens, like hurricane Katrina the poor did what they conditioned to do, they turned to the government for help instead of digging themselves out. When help came slower than they wanted, they were outraged and demanded faster service, expending their energy on attacking the government rather than working to save themselves. The new welfare mentality is not unique to America, most of Europe suffers from it to some extent.

This new welfare form of socialism breeds generations with their own ideas about how to get ahead and not surprisingly it does involve the ethics that saved us in the depression. Today we find that just going to k-12 school is a risky venture, even for the teachers. You wouldn't dare stop to change a tire in some government housing areas. But, what this dependancy and lower standards means in the long run is dramatic. It won't take long before our work force is unable to compete in the global market place. (This is one of the more serious warning signs)

Another Case of Dumb and Dumber

A call from an employee at Starbuck's resulted in the S.F. Bomb Squad blowing up a flashlight with a water cannon? One might wonder, are cops as dumb as that Starbucks guy? A few weeks ago Chico PD shut down 2 blocks in the downtown for hours over a dirty backpack left unattended by the post office. It was also dispatched with a water cannon, much to the chagrin of the homeless guy who came back to retrieve it.

For decades we've evacuated schools, movie theaters and businesses over trivial bomb threats or suspicious looking packages, because the consequences of being wrong are far too severe and probably mostly because cops know lawyers will be all over them if they are wrong. That's why the police are forced to overreact each and every time, because of that remote 1 in a billion chance with a 100% chance of a lawsuit to follow if they're ever wrong. It's caused us to be literally stuck on stupid and squander our limited resources.

On another level of dumb, recently Homeland Security (a wasteful boondoggle) bought security lighting for the Glenn County Fair. Gee, are our county fairs becoming a hot bed for terrorist gatherings? Home sure thinks so. Homeland Senility blows millions on equally useless things in the most remote regions of country...because they can. That's what happens when you give bureaucrats too much money and tell them to fix a problem. I can't fault the fair manager, he just saw an opportunity for some better lighting and grabbed it. Probably the same could be said for the cops practicing with their new water cannons.

I'm not sure Sen. John Cornyn was helping with that lengthy presentation attempting to establish the many similarities between Samuel Alito and Sandra Day O'Connor. cont- see link below

lineup, the manager, the coach, but the losing streak never ends. By and large, Republicans aren't even bothering to send in their A team anymore. Alito can start wearing his iPod to the hearings. By the end of the hearings, he'll be addressing the senators as "dude."

For fun, we ought to replace all the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee with "American Idol" contestants (assuming they wouldn't object to serving on a committee that includes a degenerate like Teddy Kennedy). Democrats would still not be able to persuade a single normal American that Sam Alito is "out of the mainstream."

With all their hysteria about Valerie Plame, I had nearly forgotten what the Democratic Party stands for. It's good to be reminded that the sole item on the Democrats' agenda is abortion.

According to Dianne Feinstein, Roe vs. Wade is critically important because "women all over America have come to depend on it." At its most majestic, this precious right that women "have come to depend on" is the right to have sex with men they don't want to have children with.

There's a stirring principle! Leave aside the part of this precious constitutional right that involves (1) not allowing Americans to vote on the matter, and (2) suctioning brains out of half-born babies. The right to have sex with men you don't want to have children with is not exactly "Give me liberty, or give me death."

In the history of the nation, there has never been a political party so ridiculous as today's Democrats. It's as if all the brain-damaged people in America got together and formed a voting bloc.

The Federalists drafted the greatest political philosophy ever written by man and created the first constitutional republic. The anti-Federalists – or "pre-Democrats, as I call them – were formed to oppose the Constitution, which, to a great extent, remains their position today.

Andrew Jackson, the father of the Democratic Party, may have had some unpalatable goals, but at least they were big ideas. Wipe out the Indians, kill off the national bank and institute a spoils system. Love him or hate him, he never said, "I'll be announcing my platform sometime early next year." The Whigs were formed in opposition to everything Jackson stood for.

The Republican Party emerged from the Whigs when the Whigs waffled on slavery. (They were "pro-choice" on slavery.) The Republican Party was founded expressly as the anti-slavery party, which to a great extent remains their position today.

Having won that one, today's Republican Party stands for life, limited government and national defense. And today's Democratic Party stands for ... the right of women to have unprotected sex with men they don't especially like. We're the Blacks-Aren't-Property/Don't-Kill-Babies party. They're the Hook-Up party.

Leave aside any moral questions about baby-killing – a term I have come to understand the baby-killing party dislikes. Smoking is fun too, but even I wouldn't support a political party whose sole raison d'etre was to eliminate non-smoking sections across the nation. That's not exactly the Magna Carta.

This week's conventional wisdom is that the Democrats weren't even trying to nail Alito at the confirmation hearings. Au contraire! The Democrats were tigers! They proved exactly what they set out to prove.

In fact, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-Hillary's state, was so deft in his questioning, he even has me convinced that Alito is going to vote to overrule Roe vs. Wade. (And just when I thought I couldn't be more enthusiastic about the nomination!)

I'll go out on a limb and bet that, after the Democrats' expert cross-examination, Judge Alito has lost the support of every single member of NARAL.

The problem for the Democrats is: NARAL members aren't like most people. "Give me liberty or give me the right to have unprotected sex with men I don't want to have a child with" just isn't that attractive a principle in the light of day."

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

Another symptom...decline of religious values. Society is turned over to the barbarians, already on the inside. A large segment has cut themselves loose from a God connection. The 1960's hippy movement and rioting was an example of anti-social behavior that was totally self-serving as it took aim on tradition. The objective was a complete rejection of establishment values and an equal distain for authority. The roots of the 1960's might be found in the 19th century period of "French enlightenment" where liberal reformers sought freedom from social, political, artistic and sexual restraints. It was the birth of existentialism, Fabians (a society formed exploring leftists political ideas), romantics and materialists in a search of the sublime. Then and now, it caused social upheaval as people became enamored with free choice and free speech to the point of abuse and anarchy, absent traditional religious values.

NOTE: I wanted to run this thread a few days more and see what else we can come up with. In the end I will do a summary of the warning signs, which just might be food for thought about our future? If you think it's beyond boring, well, hang in there, only a few more days to go!

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

More symptoms....Cultural separation. The strength of a nation comes in part from its ability to assimilate immigrants from diverse cultures while keeping its own culture in tact.

When massive immigration, (especially for economic reasons) is left unchecked there is a tendency for new immigrants to identify first with their personal heritage. Sub-cultures or societies within societies are formed and well defined divisions rise up like walls that isolate them and restrict their opportunity. The recent rioting in France is a classic example of what happens when the melting pot doesn't melt.

An impediment to effective assimilation is language. Immigrants isolated by language often group in cloistered sub-cultures, such as we see in Little Saigon, China Town, etc. and they have little motivation to learn the national language or appreciate their new culture.

The division caused by closed and isolated sub-cultures weakens the main societies ability to achieve necessary understandings for problem resolution as communication breaks down. Communication and consensus is fundamental for democracies to operated effectively, without that they are increasingly facing a sort of governmental gridlock (an inability to identify and prioritize needs).

Further, the isolation caused by sub-cultures create social and economic ceilings fueling inequities, injustices and prejudices. That is why its often said, "Strength does not come from diversity, but diversity united behind a common ideology."

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

Another symptom of decline: Society becomes out of touch with the age they live in, although statistical proof points to increasing divorce rates, higher crime, increased family dysfunction, rising drug and alcohol addictions. Their civilization is in melt down. Meanwhile an increasing number of "enlightened" people (liberals) are coming forward like false prophets, claiming they have all the answers, rallying the masses against the rich and people in authority. This phenomena is called deconstructionism and its been frequently repeated throughout societal evolution.

Value judgments become vague. There is a wide spread contempt for the old traditional ways that once formed the nation's foundation. Cultural authority is challenged at every level. Acceptable standards for truth and value are in question (aka textual criticism). An extreme example of deconstructionism is the French Revolution of 1791. Liberal thinkers of the day rallied the poor and destroyed the rich monarchy. At the time France was one of the 3 greatest powers on earth, but it went immediately backwards from the chaos of revolution. It was "deconstructed." Apathy, despair, corruption and a confused mixed of ideals ranging from democratic, socialistic and even anarchy, caused France to languish for decades as broken and despoiled nation barely able to govern itself. Note: There were many similarities between France of the early 1800's and Germany in the 1930's...both were deconstructed, but for vastly different reasons.

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

Toby S., writes......"The simple truth is this, without a major course correction this Country as we have known it will be history in much less time than its been a Country. There are people in this Country who hate that we are the greatest Country on Earth. Their purpose for being is to bring us down. These are the people who have more in common with terrorists than with us. I am a regular guy, if this is what you guys were talking about, I guess I agree with you."

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

Dale. writes.... "Interesting question; I would have to say that to date there have been very few global powers to speak of. I would argue that Persia, Greece, Rome, Great Britain and the United States are the only true nations which have ever truly held global power. One can make arguments for perhaps the Mongols or Spanish, but only the previous 5 have attained a position of unquestioned dominance at a point in time in world history. What strikes me as interesting is that out of the 5 only Persia had little or no democratic heritage. It would seem that the more representative the governments became the more preeminent their status grew. This is not a comparison of the governments within their respective systems, but a comparison between the different civilizations.

I would argue that nothing in history is for certain, only probable. History does show that to date no one nation has maintained global hegemony for more than say 300 years. But history does demonstrate that representative government’s i.e. free peoples do seem to dominate repressive government systems. This is not a hard and fast rule but a quick scan of history shows a definite pattern. One that Victor Hanson spells out well in his book “Carnage and Culture.

I believe that the United States has the potential to stand the test of time where others have failed. Our combination of representative government, strong individual liberty, rule of law, coupled with geographic location, abundance of natural resources and a free market economy ensure that the US is in a strong position to dominate the world, technologically, economically and certainly militarily for the foreseeable future. I certainly wouldn’t want to trade places with any of the would be contenders.

Having said this, it is important to note that arrogance and overconfidence are key factors in the demise of great civilizations. I would also note that in the case of Rome and Greece it was not an outside power which struck a decisive blow to their dominance but the decay of their own systems which eventually eroded the foundations for their preeminence. Abraham Lincoln once commented that “… as a nation of free men we must endure forever or die by suicide.

It would therefore seem that a nation in a position such as ours must be wary of the same two things that every other nation is. Threat from abroad and the moral decay of our populace. This is to say the watering down of those positions or stances which have made us great. As I do not see any emerging threat on the horizon to our military dominance, I would consider a lack of civic virtue to be the greatest threat to enduring US power.

Despite that patriotism and civic virtue appear to be waning in some areas, I see no emerging nation which can compete. I am therefore confident in US supremacy for some time to come." END

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

Symptoms of decline:Rampant textual criticism. Said another way, this could be revisionism or re-interpreting the written or spoken word for a broader view or sometimes just for political advantage. I.e. How many times have liberals recently tried to decide what the Constitution really meant regarding freedom of religion?

Another version of this symptom is moral relativism where the gap between right and wrong is narrowed and sometimes disappears altogether. What we may have held dear for ages as a homogenous society becomes muddled, even to the extent that right becomes wrong. Criticism of wrong is subverted by newer and more trendy ideology that often touted as being more liberal when it comes to acceptance and tolerance. Example: Old thinking - "Stealing is an absolute wrong". New - "Stealing is not necessarily wrong, it's subjective depending on the circumstance; taking a loaf of bread when you are starving is an acceptable excuse". You can take that example to the another extreme too, "I had to shoot the witness, she looked at me and I told her not too." Moral relativism, right becomes wrong.

In another dimension of moral relativism we find something called spin (another facet of textual criticism) where lying is not really lying it is just not telling the whole story or it depends on a word interpretation. President Clinton, "That depends on what the meaning of is is." And a further extension of Washington style spin is this thing called "culpable or plausible deniability," used to avoid responsibility and guilt when you are in fact guilty and responsible. We see the results in costly, scandalous behaviors in government and in business. The end result of all this is just one of the many symptoms of society in decline.

Send me your thoughts to publish here!

Warning Signs When Nations are in Decline

What are the warning signs when nations decline or die?

This is a tough question and an easy one in some respects, because most of the answers are right there in our global history and some are in our headlines.

Nations never stay number for long, a few hundred years is probably a good run. We've been on top since WWII and some day our turn for slipping off the mountain peak will come, it's inevitable. But, exactly when that might happen remains to be seen. So as Bill Reilly often quips, "What say you? Are we in decline now or are we headed for an even worse fate? Please send us the details!"

MUNICH THE MOVIE

I'm getting some flack by my critics who argue Munich is entertaining and makes a number of interesting juxtapositions between the warring oppositions. They further argue the acting is good, the special effects are good and the action is fast and hard hitting. My two thumbs down is too harsh. Well, maybe, but read on.

Spielberg's message is where I have the problem and I said so from the begining. It is woven throughout most of the last half of the movie. His message says that war is hell, that one man's terrorist is another man's hero, that desperation makes for desperate acts, killing is evil, all truisms, except for the last one. Killing and murder are on two different levels. In WWII we killed in order to stop the murders, this is moral point radical liberals still don't get and it shows up in this movie.

I strongly disagree with Spielberg when he asserts Israel was not morally justified to do what it did in response to the terrorism of the 72 Olympics. I say there was no moral parity between the cause and effect and I resented Spielberg's attempt to teach the audience his liberal ideology. If I wanted that, I could go back to Chico State. No, I just wanted to see a real life event made into an accurate movie without the spin.

In 1972-73, Israel did assassinate leaders of the PLO and for a time the world was a safer place. The assassinations were not meant to be a long term solution, rather a response to an evil act, cause and effect. A line from the movies goes something like this, Avner (the lead hitman) says, "When we kill them, another just replaces him! What are we doing, what good does it do?" The Mossad controller says calmly, "Why do we cut our fingernails?" Then he goes on to explain, Israel must fight back because we are sending a message, "You don't attack Israel without paying a dear price."

On a grander scale back in the cold war days, we called this principle "detente." Detente worked because the stakes were high. I suspect if the cost of terrorism was high enough, there would be no terrorism. However, very small, very limited responses to terrorism eventually only forms a cycle of reoccurring events. So, to that extent Spielberg and I do share some common ground here.

I'll quantify my criticism to Spielberg's message and say his hand wringing message still gets a 4 in my opinion, the movie action and acting was good, I'll give it a 7. How's that for fair? Shalom

Two Thumbs Down for Munich

And yet another forgettable film ... Munich. Can't Hollywood figure out they are not making films people want to see?

I read the book and enjoyed it, but the movie falls short because Steven Spielberg insists on beating the audience about the head and shoulders with his unique, seldom shared, version of what is and is not moral conduct. Therefore, Munich joins the growing list of Hollyweird movies from Syrianna to Jarhead that disappointed movie-goers who came to see a full on "kick butt" movie and instead got leftist propaganda - resistance is futile.

Steven Spielberg, himself the son of a real American WWII hero, depicts an Israeli hit squad that targets the evil masterminds of the 1972 Olympic assassinations. Good start. He shows in bloody detail the ruthless brutality of the terrorists capturing and eventually killing the unarmed Jewish athletes, all true, but then he slowly turns the tables and portrays Israeli agents sent to track down the senior planners of that ill fated attack as being no better than the terrorists.

For Speilberg, terrorism and counter-terrorism share the same moral equivalency. Well, maybe that's true in Hollywood, but not in the real world and that's who pays to see these movies. This was a great true story that was turned into something dark and disturbing about the good guys and for that I give Munich two thumbs down.

The real Munich massacre stunned and shocked the world. Justice came when the Palestinians terrorists got some well deserved pay back by Israeli Mossad agents. The movie could have stopped right there, because this was a great story of heroism that should have been told just as it happened, just like the "Raid On Entebe." We didn't need Spielberg pushing his own agony and moralizing over killing terrorists.

Hollywood took a 10 and made it into a 4 as a political statement.

New NBC SHOW, by Toby

From Toby S. who writes, "I guess NBC has a "new" show aimed at denigrating Christians and Republicans, (what's so new about that) called The Book of Daniel. I hear that NBC has gotten something like 600,000 calls, emails, letters from people displeased with the show. I didn't bother calling them, I just didn't watch NBC on Friday night. Funny as usual the Left is being very quiet about this.

I think they should make a show about a drug addicted, sexual predator, who cheats on his wife, dodged the draft, hates America, sells anything for a buck, lying POS liberal democrat. They could name it The Book of Bill. The problem is, its even money they wouldn't see it as offensive but as a tribute to America's first black President. It would probably win a golden O ring or whatever they give TV shows." END

Medical Treatment 3d Leading Cause of Death

According to the Journal of American Medicine, medical treatment is the 3rd leading cause of death, bested only by heart disease and cancer. According to another study, failed medical events cost the deceased patient and thier insurance companies a whopping $282 billion.

Health care now represents over 14 percent of the Gross National Product or $1.6 trillion dollars per a 2003 report. "Statistical evidence shows despite enormous expenditures, people are not living any better, but they are living longer. Americans need to drop the weight, eat smarter and exercise more to live well. If we don't, we will just spend a few extra years dying" paraphrasing medical author Dr. Joseph Mercola in his essay on health.

Dr. B. Starfield, MD, Johns Hopkins, said treatment complications by doctors result in an average of 250,000 deaths per year:

  • 12,000 -- unnecessary surgery
  • 7,000 -- medication errors in hospitals
  • 20,000 -- other errors in hospitals
  • 80,000 -- infections in hospitals
  • 106,000 -- non-error, negative effects of drugs.

The sum of all deaths from doctors, medicine and including outpatient treatment is in excess of 740,000.

Assassin's Gate - Worth the Read

    Iraq, 2003....

"One day in July, a tiny woman in a salmon-colored veil stepped out of the crowd and thrust a handwritten letter up at me. She was a schoolteacher, about thirty, with glasses and thick white face powder and an expression so exaggeratedly solemn that she might have been a mime performing grief. The letter, which was eighteen pages long, requested an audience with “Mister respectable, merciful American ambassador Pawal Bramar. It contained a great deal of detailed advice on the need to arm the Iraqi people so they could help fight against the guerrilla resistance. The teacher, who was well under five feet tall, wanted permission to carry an AK-47 and work alongside American soldiers against the beasts who were trying to restore the tyrant or bring Iranian-style oppression. She showed me the fake gun permit drawn up to illustrate her desire. She had left her position teaching English at a girls’ school in the Shiite slum called Sadr City, rather than submit to the dictates of the radical Muslims who had taken charge after the overthrow of Saddam and ordered the staff to poison the girls’ minds against the Americans."

This is an excerpt from the book Assassin's Gate, by George Packer. It's meant for those of you who want to know more about Iraq than what George Soros and Moveon.org will tell you, it gives another perspective, well worth the read.

    About Congressman Murtha

    Ron A., writes:

"Congressman John Murtha on a talk show last night said that he would not serve in the military right now. Speaking for my son who just left for a tour as a gunner on a humvee performing combat patrol in West Baghdad. Mr. Congressman I don't care what you did in Viet Nam. I don't want you or your friends watching my back.

Brian, my son, is confident in his training, his comrades and the mission. His only concern is being shot in the back either here or abroad." END

Thank you Ron. Please pass along my thanks to your brave son; I wish him well and I wish Murtha would leave office, I've had about enough of that guy.

    Treason and the Far Left

Yesterday I was listening on the radio to a young army soldier who had been severely wounded in Iraq. He was still in rehab at Walter Reed where doctors were trying to save his leg. A portion of his leg bone was so badly damaged they can't use metal rods or synthetic bone to fill the missing gap. They are hoping the bone will regenerate itself and knit back together, so the treatment now is to watch and wait. The odds are slim, but it's his only chance. He remains hopeful, even after 18 surgeries with more to come.

The soldier related that soon after arriving at the hospital he was provided "get well" letters from Americans writing to any soldier. Unfortunately, the first letter he opened had somehow slipped by the screeners and it said, "Have fun in Iraq and have fun dying!" Can you believe this came from an American citizen? What kind of a sicko would write such a thing to a wounded soldier? (Actually, I can think of a lot of people who would and they are all on the far left. I truly wish doing something that despicable would be a punishable crime.) Of course the many other letters were very supportive and encouraging.

On his way into the hospital he passed by protesters at the gate who held anti-war signs, including several targeting the soldiers. He recalled two signs, "WE LOVE I.E.D.'S" and "GOD LOVES DEAD PARATROOPERS!" Again, it's hard for me to believe this is coming from American citizens! No doubt these are the same sort of people that burn the American flag (or fly enemy flags at their home) and then have the gall to call it an act of patriotism? Lately, even their dysfunctional interpretation of patriotism is sinking to a new low, we've seen Howard Dean say on national media we can't win the war in Iraq, we've got Ted Kennedy calling our troops terrorists, threatening women and children in the night, and its hurting us in our global war on terrorism as they are trying to bring down the moral of our soldiers.

This wounded soldier was obviously upset by these protestors as he talked about the high moral value of our mission in Iraq. Which he still felt was very worthwhile and very winnable. Paraphrasing him now, "To cut and run now would be a tragic mistake and we just can't do that. It means our soldiers have sacrificed for nothing. It would undue any chance Iraqi's may have for a democratic future." He said the news media is constantly working against them, distorting their work and giving headlines for terrorism. He felt our homegrown protestors are making it tough for soldiers like him in Iraq and he added the same goes for some of our outspoken elected officials. In his closing words he wished that the anti-war critics could go to Iraq and see first hand what he has seen, talk to the Iraqi's and learn it's nothing like what the media portrays or the left is distorting for their own political agenda.

This makes me think there is only one logical response for Bush's critics now, "We don't like the war situation, but we are committed to seeing it through and doing whatever it takes to get our troops out in the shortest time possible." That's it. Anything more critical is absolutely counter-productive to our mutual goal of withdrawing from Iraq in the shortest time possible.

The left should shut up and stop chanting, "Bush lied - People died!" That ignorant mantra is itself a lie. We've proven it time and again. Bush did NOT lie. How many times do we have to say it, he used the same intel the left had and reached the same conclusions they did. More importantly, he also used very valid reasons to depose Hussein that was well within international law and backed up by a UN peace treaty that Hussein breeched...repeatedly.

These anti-American hate monger's on the left think being outspoken critics of everything the US/Bush does, says or stands for is somehow being patriotic. They prefer to wallow in their own rhetoric and spout off false allegations, but they dare not acknowledge one single thing evil about our enemy, they are too cowardly to do that. Better to attack America because they can do so with impunity (and to the roaring applause from their global leftists allies).

The only thing these sick people can still cling too is this one stale issue about WMD's. However, even that point is still debatable as anyone with half a brain knows Iraq had more than ample time to remove all evidence of WMD's prior to the war! WMD's is a moot point in the sense that Hussein forced the issue, not us. Who doesn't recall the decade of dozens of UN resolutions demanding open inspections, while Hussein steadfastly thumbed his nose at both UN sanctions and the inspections, even firing missiles at UN over-flights? This aggression and refusal to comply with the peace treaty kept the situation escalating towards a military conclusion, never mind all his war crimes and human rights violations which should have forced UN militray intervention long ago. Finally, after all the obstucting, defiance and costs of innocent Iraqi lives, there was but one responsible choice left to the UN: Military action, but they couldn't do it because necessary votes had been subverted, bribed away by Iraq's Oil for Food program. America was delt a low blow by so-called allies like Germany and Russia who acted soley in their own greedy, self-serving interests, despite of the mandate to intervene on behalf of humanity, the overwhelming evidence and the rule of law laid out in the original 1991 UN peace treaty.

Don't expect the traitors on the left to acknowledge any of this (and I meant to say traitors too). Their narrow political agenda has little concern for the truth or for national security, they are all about destroying George W. Bush and taking power, to H- - with America and to H-- with Bush....if it takes losing the war and empowering an Islamic Jihad movement, then so be it. And that my friends is exactly why I think they are traitors. They've gone far beyond the scope of political debate and a reasoned dialog in protesting this war, their actions are by its very definition...treasonous.
