Two Thumbs Down for Munich
And yet another forgettable film ... Munich. Can't Hollywood figure out they are not making films people want to see?
I read the book and enjoyed it, but the movie falls short because Steven Spielberg insists on beating the audience about the head and shoulders with his unique, seldom shared, version of what is and is not moral conduct. Therefore, Munich joins the growing list of Hollyweird movies from Syrianna to Jarhead that disappointed movie-goers who came to see a full on "kick butt" movie and instead got leftist propaganda - resistance is futile.
Steven Spielberg, himself the son of a real American WWII hero, depicts an Israeli hit squad that targets the evil masterminds of the 1972 Olympic assassinations. Good start. He shows in bloody detail the ruthless brutality of the terrorists capturing and eventually killing the unarmed Jewish athletes, all true, but then he slowly turns the tables and portrays Israeli agents sent to track down the senior planners of that ill fated attack as being no better than the terrorists.
For Speilberg, terrorism and counter-terrorism share the same moral equivalency. Well, maybe that's true in Hollywood, but not in the real world and that's who pays to see these movies. This was a great true story that was turned into something dark and disturbing about the good guys and for that I give Munich two thumbs down.
The real Munich massacre stunned and shocked the world. Justice came when the Palestinians terrorists got some well deserved pay back by Israeli Mossad agents. The movie could have stopped right there, because this was a great story of heroism that should have been told just as it happened, just like the "Raid On Entebe." We didn't need Spielberg pushing his own agony and moralizing over killing terrorists.
Hollywood took a 10 and made it into a 4 as a political statement.

Munich, Syriana, or the Book of Daniel. All pretty much the same from the standpoint of propoganda. The bohemians of Hollywood control the greatest propoganda machine ever created. Pravda in its heyday would be envious of the damage Hollywood does to our society and values.
Through promotion and self promotion these people insidiously reengineer and mold thought.
