Osama Threatens, Then Offers Truce

A tape now believed to be that of Bin Laden said, "It's only a matter of time," referring to Al Qaeda plans going forward to attack the United States. However, he also offered a long-term truce proposal to "rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan." Experts believe Bin Laden made the tape shortly after the missile strike that killed 2 senior members of Al-Qaeda and the son-in-law of the group's second leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri. Among the dead was an Egyptian chemist that has been training terrorists in bomb making.

One thing is clear, Bin Laden is living in fantasy land if he thinks any nation is going to negotiate with him, let alone the United States. The fact that Bin Laden only released an audio tape is also suspect, some feel he is probably too ill to be seen on television. The timing of this tape seems to be a weak effort to shore up morale in Al Qaeda's faltering ranks that have been suffering horrendous losses in recent months.

bin Laden is not making these statements from a position of strength. If he felt that things were going well he would never have made the offer. Unfortunately I think this only means that those in this country who wish us to fail will redouble their efforts to undermine policy. I would not be surprised if some lobby for us to jump at the offer. bin laden with an olive branch? Yeah right.
