Origins of the "Bombhead" Cartoon

Denmark: Several months ago, a decision was made to removed an art display from public view because it was deemed offensive to Muslims living in Denmark. A Danish cultural editor, Flemming Rose, saw this as an assault on their freedom of expression, but took no action.

Then about a month later, Rose heard Danish cartoonists were too afraid of Muslim militants to illustrate a new children's biography of Islam's Prophet Muhammad. And this is the point where he decided "to put his nation's famous tolerance to the test" and a cartoon contest about Islam followed. Rose contacted 25 Danish newspaper artists and requested they submit caricatures reflecting how they saw Islam, said a Christian Science Monitor news story.

Now keep in mind, Denmark is a very liberal democracy and editor Rose saw Denmark heading in a direction that was undermining their long held democratic ideals to accommodate this new Islamic society. The actions Rose took in defense of his country has since illustrated the great devide between the Muslims that choose to live in ignorance behind 7th century brutality and blind obedience to their faith and those who don't. Ironically, none of the Muslims living in Denmark have staged violent protests.

As of today, leading Muslim clerics have finally stepped up to urge their angry followers to stop the violence, but not to stop the protests.
