Peaceful Islam Demands Death for Christian Convert

"Abdul Rahman is charged with rejecting Islam and could face the death sentence under Sharia law unless he recants.

He converted 16 years ago as an aid worker helping refugees in Pakistan. His estranged family denounced him in a custody dispute over his two children.

It is thought to be Afghanistan's first such trial, reflecting tensions between conservative clerics and reformists."

Is it any wonder that when a Muslim scholar comes to our town (see story below) that we should question his honesty, when he says Islam is a religion of peace that respects all people and religions?

And where oh where is the high minded "Peace and Justice Center" on this one? Any member care to write in and give us your thoughts?

This deserves to be addressed. How can America justify sending its youth to this country when they support the execution of a human for exercising his freedom of choice in religion? The Afghani courts back this up, the Afghani government backs this up, does America really want to send funding to a country whose administration allows this? How can they take my hard earned tax dollars and give it to a government that supports discriminatory and racist policies? This ahs to be addressed immediately and it should not end here, all Arab countries should have to justify this.

Not that I am in favor of making Top Rahman out of Abdul Rahman. Sorry can't help myself sometimes. But Raymond, What "excercising his freedom of choice are you talking about"? This is their country not ours. It is their Democracy not ours. Do you think they are all going to become Kansas wheat farmers? Bush has made his point. They are going to declare this guy a nut job and dismiss it. If the Afghan government had our values they would be overturned tomorrow AM. As it is they are not Al Qaida and as with womens rights they have made progress. It took the West a long time to evolve. Don't expect the Afghans to achieve in 3 years, what we still haven't perfected yet.

I agree it should not go without a lot of pressure from enlightened nations of the world.

We need to impress upon Islamic countries the advantages of allowing basic human rights and at the same time, show them how barbaric they seem when they do such incredibly ruthless and unjust acts.

Having said that, we must not abandon the progress we've made with those friendly Arab nations. Our influence counts most when we are able to have an open dialog.

As odd as this may sound, I bet western style TV is eventually going to be one of the best ways to effect change in emerging nations. I know you could argue, then they will be just as corrupted by TV as we are, but that wasn't really where I was going.

Funny this has me thinking that we could learn a few things from them. I am not for killing people for their choice of religion but there justice system sure doesn't mess around. They have very few repeat offenders.
