Secure That Border!
Two countries, two languages one border... it's the Balkanization of the USA!
The Center for Immigration studies says, "illegal households created a net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion in 2002. We also estimate that, if there was an amnesty for illegal aliens, the net fiscal deficit would grow to nearly $29 billion."I grew up in the 50's and I saw first hand how important it was to our local farmers to have temporary farm laborers. In order to fill this need we were introduced to the "Bracero" program that seemed to work pretty well. Every year brought larger and larger groups of seasonal workers and so it went. But, what was not quite as obvious was that many workers stayed to fill other labor jobs, an unintended consequence of the temporary farm worker program.
Now our Hispanic speaking population has grown to over 30 million. That's enough to make the most dramatic changes in our culture since the civil war. Unfortunately, when up to 12 million are here illegally, some of those changes may not be desirable. The illegals, more often than not, don't speak or read English (many don't even read Spanish), they have no insurance, pay little or no taxes, disproportionately use social services and isolate themselves within all Hispanic communities and we (taxpayers) get to confront a new list of serious social and economic problems.
Costs of illegal immigration far outweighs the temporary benefits of filling low end jobs or seasonal farm jobs.
This nation's new split personality has been 40 plus years in the making. We've created a sub-culture of non-English speaking poor, walled off from opportunity by education, language, culture and increasingly isolated by the growing divide between "the have and have nots". When in history has that ever been good? Never. It leads to a lot of tensions and strife when one nation is divided by two languages, not to mention seperate cultural interests and loyalty to a foreign power. There are U.S. Cities that have large neighborhoods (barrios) where the police don't go unless summoned, because routine patrols and traffic stops are likely to cause racial incidents.
Despite the problems, most of us still have empathy for illegals and we would like to do the right thing, it's just our nature as decent Americans. We want to work out some sort of compromise and yet control the border because that will be fundamental to the success of failure of the new policy.
They wave the Mexican flags and march in protest of our laws, threatening to shut down the city. "Go home? This is my home!" reads a protestors sign. The renewed historic claims on Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California haven't helped matters, but it has helped fuel the fear and resentment that will only make matters worse for both sides of this issue.
Poll after poll says the overwhelming majority of Americans demand control over our Southern border. Some polls run as high as 82% and with numbers like this you would expect politicians to be falling all over themselves in a stampede to accommodate voters, right? Nope, they are yielding to the noise coming from illegals and special interest groups who support them.
If you dare criticize the current policies, politicians (left and right) will lecture you why you're wrong and point out the "good news" about all the wonderful things they've done to control the border security! We've been hearing this "good news" for several decades, so at this point I have to wonder, do they really think we're that stupid? The ugly answer is, apparently we are that stupid because we keep voting them back.If we want to blame someone for illegal immigration, we need go no further than the bathroom mirror.
