IF ANYTHING GOES CAN DEMOCRACY SURVIVE?
by Tina Grazier
The Defense of Marriage Act passed by Congress and signed by President
Bill Clinton defines marriage for purposes of federal law as the legal union
between one man and one woman as husband and wife. Similar laws have
since been passed in 38 states. The act, and these state laws, have been
challenged in local and state courts across the country leading to indicision
and confusion in the public. Next week the Senate is scheduled to vote on the
Federal Marriage Amendment., an amendment to alter the Constitution to
protect marriage. This may be a defining moment in American history. We've
heard from dissenters who take an "anything goes" approach to marriage but
there is an alternative point of view, one that sees marriage as fundamental to
the continuance and preservation of democracy. An 1878 Supreme Court
decision may be the foundation on which marriage as we know it survives. The
case, Reynolds versus United States, upheld the constitutionality of anti-
polygamy laws, defending the idea that democracy rests upon specific family
structures.
The mid-sixties saw the birth of the "sexual revolution", an enticing movement
that promised freedom from the stodgy old fashioned ideas of "the establishment".
As with most "good ideas" it's promoters failed to address the destructive social
consequences that would inevitably be visited upon society. Some forty years
down the road we have witnessed the rampant return of sexually transmitted
disease, excessive drug use, increased crime, millions of abortions, and
rediculously flexible divorce laws that have contributed greatly to the destruction
of the family. Another consequence is that a large portion of society now places
personal gratification and self-interest ahead of social responsibility, a destructive
and difficult result to change. The movement to change the definition of marriage
is the most recent effect of the sixties revolution. It's the latest wake-up call,
demonstrating the importance of preserving traditional marriage. When anything
goes, democracy may soon go with it...right out the window.

Madhatter, Yes...yes he did. Perhaps he had some personal need at the time. He strikes me as a very opportunistic man.
