Bush Poll Numbers Jump

abc_gma_bushpresser_060321_sp.jpgBush hits a home run with his proposal to send the National Guard to the border until

enough border patrol agents can be trained. Sample polling showed up to 75% of American's approve of this tactic. Bush's overall poll numbers leaped about 12%, although this speech was not rated as one of his best.

Hewitt report, "President Bush did exactly what he had to do tonight: Hit the middle, agreeing to the fence, to a large increase in Border Patrol personnel and funding, tamper-proof identification, National Guard back-up of ICE for at least a year, the end of catch-and-release, blunt talk on the impossibility of mass deportation, an insistence on English, and a commitment to a guest worker program that will take pressure off enforcement by funneling large numbers of immigrant workers into the legal line."

"WASHINGTON - President Bush said Monday night he will send as many as 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico to help stop the flood of illegal immigrants, part of an administration drive to win conservative support in Congress for an election-year overhaul of the nation’s tattered immigration laws.

“We do not yet have full control of the border and I am determined to change that, the president said in pressing for his $1.9 billion plan in a 17-minute prime-time address from the Oval Office.

Bush gave strong support to a plan that would give many of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States an eventual chance of citizenship — a move derided by some conservatives as amnesty. He rejected that term."

The democratic response was short, but predictably negative.

Does doubling the number of immigration patrols mean that the flood of illegals will only be a half a million each year? The National Guard units will have no authority from what I hear. Not much more than onlookers. On one side we have idiots playing the race card every chance they get on this issue. On the other side we have politicians pandering principal to the Latino vote.
Anything short of a physical obstacle along the border and prosecution of employers here will be ineffectual.

IMHO...I like most of what Bush said, but he really didn't go far enough and it came a way late (15 years late, but thats not all his problem, just part of it)...

Who, other than a liberal democrat, doesn't know the high costs of illegal immigration and all the narcotics flowing across our open border? The money spent to stop it would be very small compared to the damage it is doing to us and our sovereignty. The money we would save by enforcing the current laws and securing that border is going to be more than enough to offset what we're paying now.

I liked the idea of having a tamper proof ID card for aliens. This would force employers to accept responsibility for hiring illegals...that means very heavy fines, if they do.

Why are we not immediately deportating all illegals that have committed felony crimes now out on parole? Why? But, we aren't and there are plenty of them around. And why are we not deporting the all illegals that are found on welfare? They shouldn't be on welfare!!!! That's fraud, why would we put up with that, unless we have reasonable humanitary exceptions?

Bush must immediately put an end to this ridiculous rule that having a baby here qualifies them as legal citizens. We are one of the few countries in the world that allows this and it's one more reason people sneak into the country.

But, make no mistake, I recognize the value of immigration, but it must done legally. I also recognize the many contributions of the Hispanic community, that is not the issue! This is all about respecting the law and doing immigration the right way to protect our sovereignty and our culture.

I love the comments from 99% of you on this subject, you people are brilliant. (And thanks for the compliment Toby!)

One of the big talking points the fans of illegal immigrants love to use is " look at all the tax money taken from them that will go into SSI" and "If we do away with that tax money we only hurt ourselves". Well here is something that has come to me first hand straight from an illegal who by the way makes about $12 an hour cooking. He puts 5 or 6 deductions on his W-4 form so his tax hit every payday is very small. Do you think he is the only one doing this? A little something to think about.
Oh and Jack I was just putting into words what I am sure most of us think.

I was watching CNN a bit ago and they had a poll question, it went like this. Do you think we should be dealing with the security of our ports and boarders? Or, do you think we should be dealing with illegal immigration?
If some guy working for CNN ever came up to me with that question, I would laugh in his face. I mean come on if you deal with one, your dealing with the other because they are both major parts of the same problem.
I think that the people at CNN are too stupid to see that, so they see this as a legitimate question. Or what is more likely is they see that President Bush has hit a home run (ok maybe a triple) with base with his plan, CNN wants to muddy the waters, business as usual for the liberal media. I mean they have had their hands full not reporting or booming economy, now they will have to figure a way to ignore his rebounding Poll numbers. This is why polling is a waste of time and money. For example, the media are really loving the low poll numbers President Bush has these days. Who did they ask? Did they poll only people who voted for President Bush? If that were the case, I could respect poll numbers. Polls are political tools so it stands to reason if you want honest numbers you ask the people who elected him. We all know they didn't do that, so who did they poll? Did they stand outside the welfare office and poll "likely voters"? Are there big blocks of liberals being polled? What the hell is the point of polling people who didn't and wouldn't vote for President Bush under any circumstances?
