Down Mexico Way

By Tina Grazier, Post Scripts co-writer:

A pending event across our southern border might explain, at least in part , the cautious position our president has taken with respect to immigration and our border. On July 2nd Mexicans will go to the polls to vote for their next president. Until recently an anti-American Marxist style socialist,Lopez Orbrador, has been the frontrunner.

President Bush is accutely aware of the importance of this election and, I would bet, hopes to encourage the election of Felipe Calderon, a free market candidate with the creation of jobs being a top priority.

To quote Calderon, "How many of you (the crowd he spoke to) have family in the US?...we need to bring them back here...a good economy rests on two legs: workers and jobs. We have the workers. now let's bring investment and jobs here." He went on to say, "I will remain firm in demanding fair rights for Mexicans in the US." This last statement, as distasteful as it is to some of us, may be overlooked if it means moving the country in a more hopeful direction.

Americans would be wise to consider this pending event and the direction Mexico can take if jobs and an improving economy can be further encouraged in Mexico through the election of new leadership.
