High Cost of Security

From the Wall Street Journal...Delayed and cancelled flights could result in losses in excess of $570 million dollars. "At London airports Tuesday, passengers were allowed to take a single, briefcase-sized bag as a carry on and were also permitted to have mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices. Cosmetics, gels, toothpaste, liquids and sharp objects remained forbidden. (CONT-)

As the immediate security threat at British airports wanes, airlines are beginning to count the multimillion dollar cost of the terrorist alert -- and consider who should pay. A joint compensation claim against the British Airports Authority, which operates seven airports around Britain including London's Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick, could run as high as £300 million ($570 million), based on analyst estimates of the airlines' daily losses. Many carriers claim the BAA was ill-prepared for the emergency that led to hundreds of canceled or delayed flights."

One things for sure not too many people will feel bad for the airlines. Big business and all.

"Many carriers claim the BAA was ill-prepared for the emergency that led to hundreds of canceled or delayed flights."

People in these modern times are so childlike. The folks who survived the depression and WWII are probably laughing like crazy at the sniveling need for immediate gratification. How "prepared" were the carriers? How prepared can anyone be when the world turns upside down?

emergency-an unforseen combination of circumstances or the resulting state that calls for immediate action.

The BAA is charged with being prepared for an emergency and is aware of the current threat but does anyone believe that any authority can ever be so prepared that everything runs smoothly? Does anyone think they could possibly anticipate all scenarios? We are such weenies!
