HURRAY FOR HOLLYWOOD!!!

By Tina Grazier

I have a long and enduring love for the movies and so was very pleased last week to discover a list of people in Hollywood who have taken a personal and public stand condemning terrorist acts. I would like to offer a public statement of appreciation and gratitude to the 85 people in the entertainment industry who placed a full page ad in last Thursday's Los Angeles Times. The ad features the following quotes: "We the undersigned are pained and devastated by the civilian casualties in Israel and Lebanon caused by terrorist actions initiated by terrorist organisations such as Hezbollah and Hamas," "If we do not succeed in stopping terrorism around the world, chaos will rule and innocent people will continue to die." "We need to support democratic societies and stop terrorism at all costs." The list of prominent luminaries include actors Danny DeVito, Nicole Kidman, Sylvestor Stallone, William Hurt, Bruce Willis, Michael Douglas, Don Johnson, Kelly Preston, James Woods, Patricia Heaton,Dennis Hopper, William Hurt and directors Riddley Scott, Tony Scott, Michael Mann, Dick Donner and Sam Raimi. They were joined by the head of Paramount Pictures Sumner Redstone and Mr. Haim Saban.

Quite often it is Hollywood that puts the defining face of our nation in front of the world. This invites added responsibility in matters pertaining to our image in world events and purposes. Perhaps this is unfair but it is nonetheless true, for better or worse. The ad in the Los Angeles Times is a wonderful gesture that allows me the chance to say, "Thanks for the memories and thanks for speaking out in defense of freedom," ...now, would somebody please pass the popcorn.

Great story, glad to see Hollywood stars NOT setting a bad example for a change.

I consider myself a movieholic, but I'm aware of the stupid things big stars do and say on occassion, and that takes away from what I see on the screen. So this is good to hear. Makes me feel better about supporting them with my ticket money. Now, if we could just do somethat about the price of popcorn...

The price of popcorn and other goodies is pretty nuts (no pun intended).
