STAR TREK WAND A REALITY?
by Tina Grazier
Science fiction writers often predict the future, inventing props and devices for their characters of the future. Now Dr. Alex Kanevsky, an Russian born Israeli physician, has patented a medical device that acts like the wand we first saw Bones use to diagnose patients on Star Trek. In an article titled "Israeli Medicine's Magic Wand" Judy Siegal-Itzkovich says of the device,
"...the device is painless, non-invasive and radiation free. Patients lie fully clothed while a small electrode "pen" is attached to a finger and another to a toe. After an initial reading of the "electrical impedence" of the body's "dermal-visceral zones, " a harmless electric current is passed, and another reading is made. The "pen" is connected to the monitor of a regular computer, and within minutes the doctor is shown graphic data on blood circulation, respiratory system, immune system, airways, the spine and more."

This could be a wonderful tool for the medical profession but I must confess I can't wait for the "Beam Me Up" device myself.
