Here's Some Great Ideas for the GOP
Some 200 former Border Patrol agents offered their prescription for immigration reform yesterday in the form of a position paper opposing any form of amnesty and calling for meaningful employer sanctions along with a secure border.

Their plan is reasonable and their approach is perfect, acknowledging as it does that the problem is difficult and will take time. I'm glad the congress decided to seperate the issues. We need to be able to guage the effect of our policies. On the other hand the need to stop illegal crossing is urgent. After the earfull that representatives got when they last came home, I predict the house will hold the line for reasonable immigration enforcement and law. If Palosi wins, however, who knows what will happen at the border....and the senate has been a lost cause all along, so change there will only make solving the issue...impossible springs to mind.

How come it is, that to speak your mind in this country, you've got to be a former border patrol agent, a former Army general or a former U.S. Ambassador, employee of the State Department, the Treasury Department? What gives?

Since Libby speaks her mind so often she's "got to be a former border patrol agent, a former Army general or a former U.S. Ambassador, employee of the State Department, the Treasury Department" or completely wrong.

Huh? Nobody is stopping you from speaking. News entities interview all kinds of people, including the man on the street. Anyone can hire a hall and alert the media. What are you saying?

I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about the FORMER government employees. How come the CURRENT ones can't, or won't, speak up? If things are not going well, shouldn't current employees be in a position to speak up, and better yet, do something about it?
As I said, this doesn't seem to be the way things work anymore. Why do you suppose that is?

I think most of those that cared have given up realizing the beaurocracy isn't going to change, it will only get worse.

My guess is "won't bother"...most of the media is hostile to this administration, so what is the point of giving an interview when what you say will be distorted, misstated or used against you at some critical point down the road? Especially when the "spin" could put our soldiers in harms way and undermine the effort. I have watched the press for years. Big fat talking heads NEVER reported accurately what Ronald Reagan said in his speeches and they continue to get it wrong to this day. When the press proves they can do their jobs well maybe they will get more cooperation.
I do not agree with your underlying premise that we should be seeing more whistle blowers...only the loony left thinks we're in a "mess"...the right knows that war is messy and is not surprised by it, especially with this enemy. We also paid attention when the President clearly said this war could take 20 years...and the left didn't, tra la. Now they got their panties in a bunch and all because they don't listen and comprehend.

Madhatter, You are certainly right about the bureaucracy. The political clicks struggling to retain power, sway direction, and undermine leadership is incredible. If there's any hope at all it's in our future leaders, many of whom are receiving good educations that once again include the concepts of honor and duty to country. Even with diligence, it's a hard line to walk, especially when the people have little value for these concepts. I guess that is why we keep pressing.

"How come it is, that to speak your mind in this country, you've got to be a former..."
"I'm not talking about me..."
Kinda like wrestling an eel.

Madhatter: "I think most of those that cared have given up realizing the beaurocracy isn't going to change, it will only get worse."
Tina: "My guess is 'won't bother'...
Why would this not apply to former employees as well? Come on. You know. It will only hurt the first time you say it.

Libby, If YOU have something to say why don't you just say it.
