Republicans Lost-Problem Remains

by Tina Grazier

They’re at it again! Lawmakers are adding billions in pork to the presidents Iraq funding measure and, I imagine, counting themselves as clever for having done so. Note to Congress…the American people are sick of pandering, power plays…and Pork! Read the article Democrats to Load Iraq Bill With Add-Ons by Andrew Taylor to discover the many things your hard earned tax dollars will buy…while the troops, standing in harms way, wait for funding.

(AP) While Democrats try to restrict how President Bush can spend the $100 billion he wants for Iraq, they also hope to load his measure up with $10 billion in add-ons _ from aid for avocado growers to help for children lacking health insurance.

Oink, Oink, OINK!!

Apparently some folks who make it to higher office are just too blind…or stupid…to realize how ridiculous they look from out here. At least one has his head on straight:

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio: "Our focus must be on supporting our troops in harm's way _ without strings attached _ not on using a military spending bill as an excuse to fund pork-barrel projects and other unrelated projects."

Well, DUH!

A Reply To "What's The Point"

by Jack Lee

Tina, your fantastic insight into the nature of global terrorism is head and shoulders above the average citizen's and I really appreciated what you had to say! The current evidence says you couldn't be more RIGHT! In fact, the evidence is so abundant it should NOT be subject to debate...yet it is and at the same time too few Americans are really that aware of the problem, which is amazing considering what happened on 9/11!

Why are we so divided over these very real threats?

Is it human nature to deny evil exists because its too disturbing to think about? Are we so narcissistic that we can't see beyond our immediate self centered vanities? Or is that we are we so simple minded we would rather emerse ourselves in tabloid stories about Anna Nicole's corpse or Brittany Spears shaved head?

Whatever it is, there is a big disconnect with the risks that threatens us. That brings up another problem, I really don't think we have a lot of time to get our act together before the next big confrontation. World events tell me we are fast approaching many critical decisions on many levels from Iraq to Iran to Pakistan and dozens of other places where we have either radicals like the Taliban, Al Queda or their allies (some right here in the USA) who hate our system and our success and would like to do us great harm.

Consider, there's just a few degrees of separation between these radical fundamentalist Muslims that are taught to hate from day one to the wack-jobs in other sympathetic organizations such as the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) to Moveon.org, La Raza and other leftwing groups that would like a big change to our system, NONE of these people have you or our nations best interest in mind folks! We know these groups contain many people willing to commit extreme acts of violence to advance their personal agendas and they have, but so far their isolated acts of extremism have been far enough apart to give us a sort of false sense of complacency.

There are three things necessary in every criminal act, motive, ability and opportunity. The radicals living among us certainly have a mixed bag of motives, now they are just looking for the ability and the opportunity to complete their dream. The catalist, as I see it, that can provide the other two ingredients, is the radical Muslim fundamentalist movement. If the "average" American citizen doesn't get this by now and isn't willing to take a stand, the chances are pretty good we will live long enough to see this nation (as we know it) go under.

One last thought on this...and since I always like to end such discussions with at least one suggestion; maybe it's time for Congress to pass some really serious legislation to make it a federal offense for anyone to engage in or advocate any act of terrorism and this would take it out of state control where the laws are mixed and penalties are too soft.

Here are two examples of why we need such a law: Imam Abdul Alim Musa of Washington, DC has been caught openly supporting terrorism. And this Imam has a long history of this and spreading the hate for America." Musa said at a benefit for Imam Jamil Al-Amin after his conviction of murdering an Atlanta police officer, "When you fight Old Sam, you are fighting someone that is superior in criminality and Nazism."

Then we have the case of another Imman...Muzammil Siddiqi, who is the Executive Director of the Islamic Society of Orange County. Siddiqi taught regular classes and delivered the weekly Friday afternoon sermons at the mosque. Siddiqi said and I quote, "Those who die on the part of justice are alive, and their place is with [Allah], and they receive the highest position, because this is the highest honor." Siddiqi wants the United States to become a Muslim country through "gradual change," and that shariah (Islamic law) should become our law. "Allah’s rules have to be established in all lands, and all our efforts should lead to that direction. These are just two examples among hundreds of radical voices dennouncing the USA every day and calling for jihad while hiding behind the 1st ammendment.

It's a good thing for them I'm not King, because these guys would be on a one way trip to the first 3rd world dump that would take them with a promise of a firing squad if they tried to come back!

What’s the Point?

Looking at Jihad in America

by Tina Grazier

There are a number of American’s that believe the war on terror in Iraq is something the president made happen just so he could send large bags of cash to his 'buddies in the oil industry"…some even believe the towers came down on 911 on Bush’s orders…others go so far as to think that President Bush takes direction in Iraq from his perceived conversations with God. People believe what they want to believe even when there is mounting evidence that terrorism is, and has been for many years, a serious and growing global threat. Whatever we believe and whether we agree with our current president’s war policy or not, it would be wise to take note of all terrorist events as we look to the next election.

I read a very good article in the New York Sun last night by Alicia Colon titled, “Jihad In America”. I found it interesting because it takes us back to an incident in 1997 at the Empire State Building:

After Ali Abu Kamal shot and killed a man and wounded six others on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in 1997, his wife claimed he had been despondent over losing a great deal of money. Now, 10 years later, the Daily News on February 18 ran a special report by Mahmoud Habboush in which Kamal's 48-year-old daughter, Linda, said her father "wanted to punish the U.S. for supporting Israel — and revealed her mom's 1997 account was a cover story crafted by the Palestinian Authority."

What is particularly interesting about the Empire State Building incident is that it confirms the "hate America" pathology has been with us long before President Bush and the war in Iraq.

There’s a good chance that terrorism will be with us for years, maybe decades, to come. As we consider the various presidential candidates in the current cycle terrorism will be hard to ignore. It will be important to choose someone who understands the threat and is willing to fulfill the presidential duty to protect Americans from enemies both foreign and domestic. If we fail to consider and address this very real threat to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” there won't be much reason to think about any other issue...and that's the point.

It's a Bloody Day For Wall Street

by Jack Lee

Afternoon update: Tues. Wall Street continues to slide losing almost 500 points in the closing hour which represents a loss of about 190 billion dollars in equity.

What does this drop in the stock market signal? Nothing good, thats for sure, but you can't tell a heck of a lot from one day. Analysts worries center around the recent declines in retail sales, home prices and the 9% drop in the Chinese market. We have been hitting record highs in the recent months and profit taking is too be expected when the market turns south as it has today, which exacerbates an already bad situation. Rarely has the market made such dramatic plunges without a prolonged down turn. The DOW has only closed with a 500 point loss 3 times in history.

However, some risk takers might consider this a buying opportunity for bargain priced stocks and this could reverse some of the big losses in the closing minutes...but, the truly smart investors are going to wait to see if those bargain stocks don't become even better buys in the days to come!

It was interesting to watch China's largest internet company China.com hit the skids. Symbol "CHINA" was trading at 8.87 at 3:19PM and has shed -1.44 -13.97% on a volumn of 9,944,254.

UPDATE: Dow closed down 416 points.

THAT'S SOME BIG FOOT

by Tina Grazier

Here’s your Oscar winner update:

If you feel strongly about something, strong enough to create a movie and launch an entire movement, does it follow that you would naturally live the dream? Apparently, the task would be just a bit too much to ask for the world’s greenest Oscar winner. An article by Drew Johnson sheds some light on the size of Gores household energy footprint:

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh — more than 20 times the national average.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

Big Oil in Iraq

by Tina Grazier

On Monday the government of Iraq found accord on a most contentious and divisive issue, the issue of oil revenue and development. Find the New York Times article HERE. The draft law, which still must be approved by Parliament, allows the central government to distribute revenues to the provinces based on population and grants regional oil companies or governments to make contracts with foreign companies for development and exploration. The agreement is a positive step for the people of Iraq as they begin to build their economy.

“At the end of the day, we all supported this thing because it’s workable for all the parties,” said Barham Salih, a deputy prime minister and the head of the committee.

Iraqi leaders say they want the 275-member Parliament to approve the law before May. The legislature is in recess but is expected to reconvene next month. American and Iraqi leaders had tried to get the law approved last year, but the effort bogged down at the drafting level. Before the cabinet vote on Monday, the main Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish political blocs agreed to work together to ensure that the law passes Parliament in an expeditious manner, Mr. Shahristani said.

A related story HERE hints at the tremendous boost to the Iraqi economy this law will bring, if they can manage to let it work:

Tariq Shafiq, a former executive in the Iraq National Oil company and one of the experts called in to draft the country's petroleum law, says Iraq could "very easily" get to 3.5 million barrels a day. He says it is "physically" capable of producing 10 million barrels a day - around the current output levels of Saudi Arabia, the pre-eminent producer today.

Mr. Shafiq, who now works for the consultants Petrolog & Associates, says that foreign involvement in Iraq's oil industry is needed for its technical knowledge, not capital - given the high price of oil, investment is pretty much self-financing. "Iraq has been left behind," he says.

Al’s Inconvenient Quest

Winning Oscar Just a Start
by Tina Grazier

“It’s the economy stupid!” So said Al Gore while running for VP with ol’ Billy Boy back in the day. Fast forward a few years and we find that his real heart’s desire is “saving” the planet. In order to fulfill this quasi- religious quest he will use lots of flash and glitz with a little bit of Hollywooood thrown in for good measure. Hollywooood, of course, being the home of fantasy and illusion, with nary a worry over small matters such as scientific proof or economic impact...stupid or not.

“An Inconvenient Truth” has now won two Oscars and Al has promised to dedicate “all his efforts to pressuring governments to act on climate-crisis issues.” He said this backstage…after making the following statement onstage:

"People all over the world, we need to solve the climate crisis. It's not a political issue. It's a moral issue."

If global warming is not a political issue why will he dedicate “all his efforts” pressuring “governments”?

In fact Gore has made this issue political from the beginning. His theater of operation may have changed but his ambitions to affect the world politically still take center stage…and his use of the art of illusion remains true. An article by Kevin Mooney points out that Gore’s documentary violates the standards for documentary filmmaking but will, none the less, be given a pass by the PC Hollywood elites:

… while it is permissible to employ storytelling devices such as re-enactments, stock footage, stills and animations, the emphasis must be on fact and not fiction.

Gore "crosses a line" that takes his documentary from fact to fiction by flatly claiming polar bears are drowning, when in reality, there is no hard evidence to substantiate his claim, Berlau said.

In past years, the Academy has applied "very strong standards against the manipulation of animal scenes in film," Berlau said.

One apologist for ignoring the rule had this to say:

Since the thrust of the film is about "Al Gore's quest," Seavey said, there should be no contention as long as "nothing is fictionalized about Gore's quest."

Oh, I see, it’s “Al Gore’s quest,”...stupid…and that sums it all up nicely. Neither flawed material, nor lack of scientific proof, nor warnings of economic overburden and taxation shall stop this non-political politician from his quest.

The China Solution

by Tina Grazier

This is one of those shocking stories out of China:

‘Their souls are gone to the online world’

Alarmed by a survey that found that nearly 14 percent of teens in China are vulnerable to becoming addicted to the Internet, the Chinese government has launched a nationwide campaign to stamp out what the Communist Youth League calls "a grave social problem" that threatens the nation.

Internet “addiction” is the problem…the Chinese solution includes electric shock, counseling, military discipline, drugs, and hypnosis. Parents pay as much as $1300.00 a month to send their kids to a facility; a heavy burden for most families since that’s ten times the average salary. It’s obvious that these parents are concerned about their children given the cost and severity of the treatment.

Sun Jiting spends his days locked behind metal bars in this military-run installation, put there by his parents. The 17-year-old high school student is not allowed to communicate with friends back home, and his only companions are psychologists, nurses and other patients. Each morning at 6:30, he is jolted awake by a soldier in fatigues shouting, "This is for your own good!"

The methods can be harsh depending on the level of addiction. There’s some evidence that treatment centers may be coming to your neighborhood soon:

There's a global controversy over whether heavy Internet use should be defined as a mental disorder, with some psychologists, including a handful in the United States, arguing that it should be. Backers of the notion say the addiction can be crippling, leading people to neglect work, school and social lives.

This story invokes many questions:
How many American kids are being harmed in this way and does it mean they're mentally ill?
Are these methods considered vile...in the same class as "torture"?
Why isn't the global community filled with alarm over this?
And the big one...Fellow adult bloggers and internet friends…should we be concerned for our own sanity?

Also of note in the story is the generally oppressive aspect of the “solution”:

The Communist government runs a program limiting Web access, censoring sites, controling online political dissent, and “has passed regulations banning youths from Internet cafes and has implemented control programs that kick teens off networked games after five hours.

Monkey Business

An amazing discovery out of Africa is reported in the Washington Post today:

Chimpanzees living in the West African savannah have been observed fashioning deadly spears from sticks and using the tools to hunt small mammals -- the first routine production of deadly weapons ever observed in animals other than humans.

Using their hands and teeth, the chimpanzees were repeatedly seen tearing the side branches off long, straight sticks, peeling back the bark and sharpening one end. Then, grasping the weapons in a "power grip," they jabbed them into tree-branch hollows where bush babies -- small, monkeylike mammals -- sleep during the day.

Folks, it's a jungle out there!

Update-Blair Decision

This story out of The Scottsman reveals a different strategy from the one reported yesterday:

THOUSANDS of British troops will remain in Iraq well into next year, and a complete UK withdrawal may come only when United States forces also leave the country, Tony Blair signalled yesterday.

"What all this means is not that Basra is how we want it to be, but it does mean that the next chapter in Basra's history can be written by Iraqis" - TONY BLAIR

England is experiencing the same kind of division that we have here in America. More than anything what this means, is that we all have to dig to find out what's really going on.

But the Prime Minister dashed hopes of a swift and comprehensive withdrawal, telling MPs: "The UK military presence will continue into 2008, for as long as we are wanted and have a job to do."
That job will include supporting and training the Iraqi authorities, patrolling Iraq's border with Iran and, perhaps most significantly, "securing supply routes". Those routes stretch from Basra's port to central Baghdad, where the bulk of the 132,000 US troops in Iraq are based, and US commanders are understood to be insisting Britain cannot hand control of the supply corridor to the Iraqis.

Mr Blair's statement was carefully co-ordinated with the US, and followed a conversation on Tuesday with George Bush, the US president. After the British announcement, two minor members of the US-led coalition also said they were to leave: Denmark will pull out its 460 troops in August, as will Lithuania.
Mr Blair said that, after a security crackdown by British troops, it was now possible to begin handing control of Basra to the Iraqi authorities. British troops would withdraw from their bases there and move to camps outside the city.

However, military sources expressed fears that militia groups in Basra would be emboldened by the withdrawal, increasing the threat to British forces. "It may well be they increase their attacks to try to make it look like we're being driven out," one army officer told The Scotsman.

Pelosi Tattles on Cheney

by Tina Grazier

The Vice President was in Tokyo recently and said this about the Pelosi/Murtha plan to restrict funding for the war:

"I think if we were to do what Speaker Pelosi and Congressman Murtha are suggesting, all we will do is validate the Al Qaeda strategy," the vice president told ABC News. "The Al Qaeda strategy is to break the will of the American people ... try to persuade us to throw in the towel and come home, and then they win because we quit."

The queen of the House, all in a huff, said this:

"And you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to call the president and tell him I disapprove of what the vice president said," Pelosi said. "It has no place in our debate."

Gee Senator, you’re playing with the big boys now…get a grip!

Iraq: More Troops Good - Less Troops Also Good

On Aug 14, 2004 President Bush told a group representing small businesses, "I want your child home as quickly as possible. But we must not send mixed signals. We must stay the course until the job is done. The other day, my opponent said in the heat of political -- in the heat of the political arena, said, well, they'll -- if I'm elected, they'll be -- the troops will be substantially reduced in six months. That's a bad signal to send.... it not only affects the thinking of the enemy, it also affects the thinking of allies."

Now contrast that with this: "Britain will withdraw around 1,600 troops from Iraq in the coming months and aims to further cut its 7,100-strong contingent by late summer if Iraqi forces can secure the country's south, Prime Minister Tony Blair said Wednesday. The announcement, which came as Denmark said it would

withdraw its 460 troops and Lithuania said it was considering pulling out its small contingent, comes as the U.S. is implementing an increase of 21,000 more troops for Iraq.

Both President Bush and Vice President Cheney called this phased withdrawal by coalition forces good news. “I look at it and see it is actually an affirmation that there are parts of Iraq where things are going pretty well,” Cheney told ABC News while in Tokyo. The bad news is, the White is telling us we need to send more 21,000 more troops to Iraq to quell the growing sectarian violence that is spreading everywhere except in Kurdish controlled areas.

Bush has admitted he underestimated the Iraqis willingness to assume control and this has resulted in numerous delays on many levels. While the White House and the Pentagon making serious blunders in Iraq, Iran was busy sending military advisors and deadly bombs to aide the insurgency and kill our soldiers. Iran is doing this now with total impunity because they are pretty well assured they will not face any military consequences. In essence they have "mean mugged" the USA and they got away with it and now they've taken it to the next level of direct military involvement. Our response is a tepid protest to the UN about their involvement.

No amount of spin can convince me that Washington is not on an opposite track as its main coalition allies and that is troubling, to put it mildly.

As we can probably all recall, whenever President Bush was pressed for a timeline of withdrawal in Iraq he has told us and the Iraqi people, "We will be here for as long as it takes...". He's said this over and over, increasingly to the chagrin of more and more Iraqis. This is probably the last thing Iraqi's wanted to hear as the US was looking more each month like occupiers than liberators.

Polls currently show that a majority of Iraqi's want the U.S. out: "A strong majority of Iraqis want U.S.-led military forces to immediately withdraw from the country, saying their swift departure would make Iraq more secure and decrease sectarian violence, according to new polls by the State Department and independent researchers. In Baghdad, for example, nearly three-quarters of residents polled said they would feel safer if U.S. and other foreign forces left Iraq, with 65 percent of those asked favoring an immediate pullout, according to State Department polling. Nearly three-quarters of residents in one poll said they would feel safer if U.S.-led troops left Iraq. Some Iraqis say they believe the U.S. presence has fueled sectarian warfare."

Bush's policy making in Iraq is limited by his term in office and that means from the time he started making promises to, "stay for however long it may take", he actually had about 3 1/2 years before another administration would re-evaluate his policies. "We will stay the course until the job is done, however long it may take...", is looking more like a fairy tale than a promise .

Considering all this, we're supposed to think it's "good news" that the UK is in a phased withdrawal and is going to be out of Iraq by 2008.

Choose Wisely

by Tina Grazier

The place we choose to call home matters. Laws and values in the community must be consistent with our own if we are to flourish and find happiness as we raise our families. When they are not, an atmosphere for fracture is evident and can often lead to tragedy. A recent story out of England is reflective of this unheeded wisdom:

A father killed his wife and four daughters in their sleep because he could not bear them adopting a more westernised lifestyle, an inquest heard yesterday. Mohammed Riaz, 49, found it abhorrent that his eldest daughter wanted to be a fashion designer, and that she and her sisters were likely to reject the Muslim tradition of arranged marriages.

Immigrating to a different country cannot be easy. The choice to come to America is often made when staying in the country of ones birth means oppression and injustice. We have a long tradition of welcoming people in the U.S., still, we ask that when you choose to come to America, you come prepared to embrace our culture and the laws that govern our nation. This is for the good of the nation and her people, but it is also for the benefit of those who will call America home. Please, choose wisely.

Score One for The Good Guys

In a major victory for Bush, an appeals court upheld a 2006 law restricting detainees' access to US courts.

In an important ruling announced Tuesday, a divided federal appeals court panel here dismissed cases filed by 63 detainees raising fundamental legal challenges to various aspects of the Bush administration's approach to the war. The ruling applies to every pending or future case – in effect closing all but a few doors to the courthouse for those being held at Guantanamo. "Federal courts have no jurisdiction in these cases," the appeals court declared.

Religion, Politics & the Left

by Tina Grazier

Jesus.jpg The 2008 race for the presidency has begun. One group that I believe will become quite vocal is the newly acknowledged “religious left”. Democrats have been known to poke fun at religion, especially the religious right, but the last presidential election found liberals whining that “they were religious too!” Since that time bible quotes and prayers are showing up regularly in their speeches and activities. Recently, for instance, they invited Husham Al-Husainy of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center to lead the prayer at their annual winter meeting:

"We thank you, God, to send us your messages through our father Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Mohammed. Through you, God, we unite. So guide us to the right path. The path of the people you bless, not the path of the people you doom. Help us, God, to liberate and fill this earth with justice and peace and love and equality. And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation. Amen."

The prayer seems relatively harmless until we ask the obvious...just who are the doomed. A report by Debbie Schlussel last summer revealed that Imam Al-Husainy led "almost-daily protests of thousands of Hezbollah supporters on the streets of Dearborn and Detroit, swarming with swastikas and anti-Semitic, anti-American signs.” Judging from this overt involvement it seems quite probable that Al-Husainy, in his prayer for the democrat party, is expressing the Muslim belief that Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed were all Muslim prophets and that Judaism and Christianity were created through corrupt teachings by Moses and Jesus. Does his prayer make the subtle but poignant suggestion that Christians and Jews are the doomed people? Read the full article, Known by the Company They Keep? by David Limbaugh.

There are those on the religious left that hate America and believe she represents an evil threat in the world.

Although some fault both democrats and republicans, these extremists are aligned with democrat causes and beliefs, causes such as feminism, environmentalism and Darwinism. In a recent Front Page Magazine article by Mark D. Tooley, The Religious Left vs. "Demonic" America, the extremism of certain religious academic elites is emphasized in his review of a new book:

The recently published “American Empire and the Commonwealth of God ” vividly illustrates the cosmological hatred that mainline Protestant elites, especially in academia, now reserve for their country. “Empire” is a project of the Presbyterian Church (USA) publishing house, Westminster John Knox Press.

Authored by three theologians from United Methodist seminaries, with help from a Jewish professor of law from Princeton, “American Empire” asserts that the United States is the “primary threat to the survival of the human species (along with that of may other species as well).” At least one of the authors argued that America is worse than Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, and all four writers rejoiced in resistance to the “empire,” whether it is from communist Cuba, Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, or various Islamic dictatorships.

Anyone who would publish the belief that communist Cuba and Islamic dictatorships are preferable to America should leave the country. The only alternative open to them is to try to politically undermine our government and Constitution. They cannot possibly claim allegiance to America and hold this view at the same time. It just does not fly.

This election cycle will feature moral and religious expression from both sides of the aisle. Generally speaking this represents a positive movement in America. As we consider the candidates, it will be important to notice their values and religious beliefs, but more importantly, we should take note of the ideas they propose with respect to the Constitution and our founding religious ideals.

Quoting the President

“If I were to try to read, much less answer, all the attacks made against me, this shop might as well be closed to any other business. I do the very best I know how — the very best I can. And I mean to keep on doing it until the end. If the end brings me out all right, then what they say against me will not amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, then ten angels, swearing I was right, would make no difference.”

Abraham Lincoln said it, which just goes to show there is nothing new under the sun.

President’s Day Quiz

Other than the obvious, what do the following Presidents of the United States all have in common?

William Henry Harrison (1840), Abraham Lincoln (1860), James Garfield (1880), William McKinley (1900), Warren G. Harding (1920), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1940), John F. Kennedy (1960).

They are all included in the 20 year pattern called Tecumseh’s Curse. Each was elected or re-elected in a year evenly divisible by twenty and each died while in office. Zachary Taylor died of Cholera while in office in 1850 but was elected in 1848 making him ineligible for this exclusive “club”. Ronald Reagan, elected in 1980, broke the curse when he survived the assination attempt on his life. George W Bush, elected in 2000, survived when a grenade was tossed at him.

Spice Up Your Life While Fighting Cancer

by Dr. Suzanna Zick, University of Michigan

spices.jpgDid you know you can spice up your diet to fight cancer, lower your blood pressure and even look younger?

It's long been known that certain spices, such as basil, oregano and garlic, will help you fight cancer, lower blood pressure and even maintain a healthy weight. That's not all! Regularly sprinkling rosemary on your favorite dishes will fight aging and help you to look younger, according to Suzanna Zick, a naturopathic physician and researcher with the University of Michigan Health System. Using more herbs and spices and fewer traditional seasonings like sugar, salt and fat, can help to improve the overall health benefits--and flavor--of the foods we eat every day.

Here's a new wrinkle on the aging process...

Why do we get wrinkles, jowls and that droopy appearance as we age? You can blame it on one surprising factor: Your bones. It's more than gravity. According to research by Dr. David Kahn, a plastic surgeon in Palo Alto, Calif.,

we get droopy as we age because our facial bones shrink. The bones in the face actually lose volume and recede a little bit as we get older, all of which plays a surprisingly important role in the appearance of wrinkles and jowls, report Reuters and HealthDay News.

"When we think of aging of the face, we typically just think that the soft tissue--the skin and the fat--deteriorates and becomes looser or bigger, and we typically just lift everything back up and take out some skin to tighten it back up," Kahn explained to Reuters. "We don't usually think of the shrinking of the bones or manage this in terms of aging. I think we need to look at a way to combine a traditional facelift with something that adds volume to the face, like with fat injections."

The study: To look for age-related changes in the bony elements of the face, three-dimensional CAT scans were taken of the faces of 30 men and 30 women in this study. They were equally divided into three age groups: 25 to 44 years old; 45 to 64 years old; and older than 65 years. All were white and none had broken bones or other medical problems that could affect the results.

The results: By comparing the CAT scans of the younger and older participants, Kahn determined there were statistically significant changes in the angles of the bones of the facial skeleton, especially in the mid-face area and the lower part of the orbits around the nose. The facial bones dissolve, shrink and leave empty spaces as we age, creating a loss of volume. Meanwhile, our skin loses elasticity, and it can't tighten around those empty spaces. What's left? Drooping and wrinkles. Women lose facial bone volume at a younger age than men do, causing them to see the signs of aging earlier.

The takeaway: "As we age, not only do we lose fat in our faces, but also our bones actually change in contour, often making us look older than we feel," Kahn told HealthDay News. It's more than gravity that creates wrinkles and older looking skin. In addition, loss of volume in the face and very real changes in the facial bone structure cause us to look older. Kahn speculates that future facial rejuvenation techniques will include fillers to add back volume caused by shrinking bone, as well as the traditional lifting of the skin.

The findings were presented at a conference of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Chicago.

“Roadmap Out of Iraq”

The Hillary Plan
by Tina Grazier

Find the story HERE ladies and gentlemen.

040116-A-2995R-022-hr.jpgIt calls for stopping President Bush's plan to send more troops into Iraq, and would cap troop levels at January figures; it aims to protect troops by ensuring they are properly trained and equipped; it would end what Mrs Clinton called the "blank check" for the Iraqi government; it would convene an international conference on Iraq; and it would start a phased redeployment out of Iraq in 90 days.

"We have to end this war in a smart way, not a Republican or a Democratic way, but a way that makes us safer and gets our troops home as soon as possible," Mrs Clinton said. "If (President) George Bush doesn't end this war before he leaves office, when I'm president, I will."

Wow! Are we impressed? Well, hardly. Leave it to an ambitious unscrupulous female to think she has the capacity to just end war...and by fiat no less. She calls this “smart”. Well, lets take a look:

Her plan is to make America “safe” by taking her ball and going home…maybe she’ll stick out her tongue for good measure.

Her “plan” is to sidestep the advice of the general in charge of operations and organize an international tea party to “discuss” Iraq. Whoa…discussions…now that’ll fix 'em! No terrorist on earth can stand up under the threat of talks. (The enemy, meanwhile will be the ones in the shadows laughing at the pure stupidity of it all.)

She plans to cut funds and cap troop levels thus tying the hands of our ally, the Iraqi government, while undermining the plans of General Patreus. It doesn't take a village to see the error in her thinking. But she’s not finished yet…the absurdity continues…

She will “protect the troops by ensuring they are properly trained and equipped”. I'm blown away...that arrogant…well I can’t really use the word of choice…lets just say the military is perfectly capable of training without her input or help. Also, if she really believes they need more equipment she can do something about that TODAY. She can do it without pretending to be Commander-in-Chief. She can do it with legislation…and more, not less, FUNDING! This plan of attack would actually fall under her current job description!!!

Now here’s the topper, folks, the big wrinkle that proves total incompetence. She will properly train and equip the troops...only to BRING THEM HOME IN 90 DAYS!

In a nut shell, the senators “plan” is nothing short of ridiculous. The enemy has vowed “death to America” and whether she likes it or not, it’s an important piece of the war puzzle. Psssst! Note to the “smartest woman in America”, the enemy won't care that you think it’s over. The war won't end until terrorists give up or we crush them. This is a tiny little nuance that you, along with your hippie dippy cohorts and fawning feminist followers, refuse to acknowledge. Talk about an inconvenient truth!

This weeks best joke, rated PG:

Submitted by TinmanB

A woman named Jill stood up during her church's prayer request time one Sunday morning, took the microphone from one of the church ushers, and bared her soul to the enrapt congregation: "I want to tell you about the awful accident that my husband, Jim, has suffered this past month. He was riding his bike, lost control, ran off the...

highway and hit a tree. He was rushed to the hospital, and could have died, but thank the Lord, all he suffered was a broken scrotum."

The congregation gasped in horror. The men in the congregation were obviously uneasy and writhed in their seats as she continued, "Jim has been in terrible pain all month since the accident. He has trouble breathing. He has trouble swallowing his food. He can hardly lift anything, he's in so much pain, and he has missed work because of it. He can't lift our children up to hold them and give them the personal love that they need. Worst of all, we can no longer cuddle and have intimate relations. He is in constant pain, a pain so terrible that our love life has all but slipped away into oblivion.

I would like to ask you all in the congregation to pray for Jim, and pray for us, that his broken scrotum will soon heal and be as good as new."

A dull murmur erupted within the congregation as the full impact of this terrible accident sunk in, and the men in the congregation were visibly shaken up with the thought that, "there but for the grace of God go I."

Then, as the murmuring settled down, a lone figure stood up in midst of the congregation, worked his way up to the pulpit, obviously in pain, adjusted the microphone to his liking, then leaned over and said to the congregation:

My name is Jim, and I have only one word for my wife, Jill. That word is: STERNUM!"

The Inequality of Home Prices

New data on home sales indicate which metro areas have the narrowest gaps in housing prices—and which ones have the widest. by Peter Coy

Who hasn't driven around a city and marveled at the disparity in the sizes and prices of houses, from ordinary tract homes to palaces? The gaps seem to be bigger in some metro areas than others. Miami, for example, stands out as a city with a huge spread between the glittering precincts of Fisher Island and the vast areas of old, small, and slowly deteriorating homes.

Now, BusinessWeek.com has quantified the inequality of house prices. For the first time, we've put together data for 150 metro areas showing the 99th percentile price, the median price, and the size of the gap between them. (Technical points: The median is the balancing point at which half the houses in a market are less expensive and half are more expensive. The 99th percentile is the point where 99% of the houses are less expensive and 1% are more expensive.)

Sure enough, among the biggest metro areas, the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall (Fla.) area has the biggest ratio of the 99th percentile to the median—what we call the "inequality index." The 99th percentile house costs 6.5 times as much as the median house.

Dissecting the Spread

Perhaps more surprising is that the narrowest spread in housing prices among major metro areas is in costly Silicon Valley. In San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., the ratio between the top and the median is only 3.4. San Jose has plenty of very expensive houses, to be sure. Its 99th percentile house is $2.5 million, even higher than Miami's $2.2 million. But its inequality ratio is lower because the median price in San Jose is so high: fully $745,000.
Don't assume that a big spread is a bad thing and a narrow spread is good. After all, middle-income families in Silicon Valley, where the inequality index is small, aren't exactly happy about the sky-high median prices there.
Housing prices, of course, have been top of mind in recent months. Softness in many markets has made homeowners nervous, and hurt the stocks of homebuilders such as D.R. Horton (DHI), Toll Brothers (TOL), Pulte Homes (PHM), and Lennar (LEN). On Jan. 25, the National Association of Realtors reported an 8.4% drop in home sales for 2006, to 6.48 million, the sharpest decline in 17 years (see BusinessWeek.com, 1/25/07, "Homebuilders Hammered. Time for M&A?").

Different Demographics

The numbers on inequality in home prices were prepared at the request of BusinessWeek.com by Michael Sklarz of New City Technology in Honolulu, an affiliate of Tokyo-based New City Corp. There are no figures for Texas and some other states that don't release pricing data. New City is a consultant to the firm that gathers the data from county recording offices, International Data Management, which is a subsidiary of Fidelity National Information Services.

BusinessWeek.com ran the new numbers past some economists and housing experts and got some interesting observations. Brian Bethune, a U.S. economist and housing specialist at Global Insight in Lexington, Mass., said the numbers probably reflect the differences in demographics between metro areas. He said San Jose's price range is so tight because there are very few homes available for low- to moderate-income homeowners. As a result, those lower-income families rent or live outside the area, keeping the median price within the area high.
By contrast, the Boston-Quincy (Mass.) area has a big gap, second only to Miami's. Why? Even though greater Boston has a reputation for being expensive, the median price is considerably lower than in San Jose: $375,000 vs. $745,000. Bethune says Boston may house a greater diversity of types of workers, including ones with more moderate incomes.

Stuck in the Middle

Miami fits that story, too. At the high end, it attracts the likes of Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, and wealthy Latin American families. Yet it has a huge pool of workers in tourism and the ports, where average pay is relatively low. Miami needs a diversity of housing stock to serve all of its residents. One other thing dragging down Miami's median is that the metro area excludes the outer suburbs that have most of the gated communities, with houses selling for $300,000 to $600,000, notes Mike Morgan, a broker in Stuart, Fla.

A high inequality index doesn't mean there's a big bulge of super-luxury homes. For proof, look at Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, Ohio. Its 99th-percentile home, at $705,650, is actually cheaper than the median-priced home in San Jose or San Francisco. But its inequality index is high because the median price is extremely low: $140,000.

The biggest metro areas tend to be in the middle range on the inequality index: Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, Ill., is 4.9, Los Angeles County, Calif., is 4.6, and New York-White Plains, N.Y.-Wayne, N.J. is 4.5. Metro areas that big tend to have diversified workforces and populations, so they don't land on either extreme.

Coy is BusinessWeek's Economics Editor.

When Johnny Comes Home

by Tina Grazier

The soldiers in the “protest surge” seem to think that marching Johnny home will mean victory for them. They haven’t thought beyond the rush they anticipate when they have “ended” the war. After all, those silly Al-Qaeda guys are just going to drop everything and go home…to plant flowers and raise kittens…right? Yeah, sure they will, as soon as the evil warmongering efforts of that illegitimate White House “occupant” are crushed!

‘Spose they’ll notice the big door that swings wide open as they snuggle happily in their "safe" little beds? I anticipate one of those deer in the headlights moments myself...temporarily at least...then we'll all be subjected once again to a lesson learned the hard way.

Ultimately the enemy want to crush our economy and bring us under subjugation. Consider the thousands of men around the world like the ones featured in this story out of Canada:

An online message, posted by The Al-Qaeda Organization in the Arabian Peninsula, declares "we should strike petroleum interests in all areas which supply the United States ... like Canada," the No. 1 supplier of both fuels to the U.S.

Last week's message is contained in Sawt al-Jihad (Voice of Jihad), the group's online magazine. A feature article, titled "Bin Laden's Oil Weapon," encourages al-Qaeda operatives to continue to follow directives from Mr. bin Laden to strike oil targets not only in Saudi Arabia, but elsewhere, according to a translation by the SITE Institute, a non-profit U.S. group that monitors terrorist websites

Three western countries are singled out in the call-to-arms -- Canada first, followed by Mexico and Venezuela. Would-be attackers are instructed to target oilfields, pipelines, loading platforms and carriers.
It also is "an operational suggestion to the 'homegrown jihadists' and independent groups that follow the inspiration message of al-Qaeda. To them, it outlines a suggested list of potential new targets. Canada is at the top of that list."

They are committed and continue to plan and plot “death to America” The war against the West will continue…they will follow Johnny when he comes marching home.

More On.... A Scandal Brews

A post from Tina

Jack, your observations are right on. As congress busies itself covering butt on the war for the next election cycle, none of us out here can afford to hold our collective breath on the issues of the border and drugs. I'll leave the drug enforcement issue to you who are expert.

I know that 911 shifted the focus in many ways and made some issues come forward with even more emphasis and necessity. The border certainly is a big part of that. The need to concentrate energies and attention on issues in Iraq have, no doubt, preoccupied the president in ways he didn't expect. Words don't get it done unless they are followed by continuing actions until the desired result is achieved.

Unfortunately the drug problem is, I believe, a societal problem first and foremost. I'm not sure anything but thankless tail chasing can be done unless we can change the culture. If the market goes away so will the need for law enforcement. Changing our society will take a concerted effort over many years but it is the heart of the problem. Our president agrees:

Here are a few quotes from the National Red Ribbon Week for a Drug-Free America Proclamation by GWB:

Through the efforts of families, law enforcement officers, healthcare professionals, teachers, and dedicated community activists, we have made progress in the ongoing war against substance abuse. To continue this progress, my Administration is implementing a comprehensive, results-oriented strategy for reducing illegal drug use in America. We will work cooperatively with other nations to help eradicate illegal drugs at their source. We will increase border security to stop the flow of these drugs into America. And we will provide Federal support to local law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking networks.

The most effective way, however, to reduce the cycle of youth drug addiction and the crime it causes is to reduce demand. This effort begins at home; and it depends upon the active participation of families, schools, and community organizations in education and outreach programs that clearly communicate to children the dangers inherent in drug and alcohol abuse.

Addictions are what fills the space when real satisfaction has illuded us...and when we see no hope for a different outcome. Addiction has been "treated" for the past 40-50 years in many ways, but one thing that needs to change is the focus on self esteem. We have been looking at "self" to such a narcissistic degree that we have forgotten how to put our attentions on giving and participation. The "me" generation needs to start asking "what you can do for your country"...or your family, or neighbor, or child, or boss, or employee, or....and we need to honor a higher power, even if we only think of it as the universe!

The Scandal Brews...

by Jack Lee

Our Libertarian friend and writer, Jeff, has made some interesting points about the drug war and our failed policies and I can't really disagree with him, but perhaps I can ad a new perspective...as an insider. I was a drug warrior in combat for many years.

Our drug enforcement system is seriously broken and it is most broken on our border with Mexico where the illegal drugs flow into the USA freely. What we are doing and have been doing for years is so outrageously expensive and ineffective, it is an abomination on the integrity of the White House and Congress who have long known the seriousness of this situation and the many failures along the way.

Currently up to 96% of all drug shipments make it across the Mexican border. That's not my statistic, this comes from the agency that I was trained by and worked with, the DEA! This is the unpublished, confidential statistic for in house use only. But, don't fault the DEA, Border Patrol or Customs or the many narcotic task forces...the deck is stacked against them, so much so that they can't make a dent in this problem no matter how hard they try.

Blame Congress and the President, because that is truly where the blame belongs. And Congress and the Presidents for well over 30 years have known about this growing threat and they have repeated failed to do their duty to fix it to any sense of managable level!

What good Libertarian (or what good citizen period) would not agree it is the duty of the federal government to secure and protect our borders? And it long past time that we all asked why NOT?

If there were only 3 things important to preserving the nation, control over our borders must be one of them.

Once these illegal drugs enter this country via our open border the damage begins and it spreads like wildfire. The average shipment of cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, meth, etc., usually gets stepped on (cut, diluted and resold) anywhere from 5 to 8 times before it reaches the end user. How many times it stepped on depends on the drug and the original purity. That means there is a lot of hands that touch that drug shipment and each hand takes a chunk of profit.

That one shipment becomes part of in a massive distribution system involving all sorts of crime and tons of untaxed, illegal money. Once the drug shipment is into the USA it's almost impossible to stop simply because of the mass logistics it requires to track down on the distributors at all sorts of levels. But, IF WE CAN stop one shipment at the border, WE CAN can stop thousands of people from being involved in illegal selling and using and all that goes along with it.

Now consider that substance abuse is not just substance abuse where what one person does is his own business. Because it's never about one person's choice to use illegal drugs and just abuse their own body. People outside the drug world never really stop to think about the other included people in the drug abuse scene because its perhaps to abstract unless you really know the problem up close and personal.

Drug use and drug trafficking can easily involve any number of crimes and organizations, like prostitution, rape, murder, arson, armed robbery, stolen property, burglary, spousal abuse, child endangerment, child abuse...you name the crime and I can find you somebody involved in substance abuse that committed it. Drugs are the one BIG COMMON denominator underlying crime in America and if you don't believe that you are out of touch with druggies and all their associated crimes that exist in this underworld.

These are facts and its one sick, sick situation that Congress and the President have avoided and yet they clearly have the sworn duty and the ability to greatly diminish this importation of illegal drugs across an open border, but they have failed to act in any meaningful way for decades.

Having secure border means the direct savings cost to the American society in terms of medical care, psychiatric care, prison costs, enforcement and investigation costs, court costs, law suits, accidents, lost work hours, low productivity, broken families, child endangerment, counseling, birth defects, unwanted pregnancies, lost income and so much more... would more than justify the spending to finally secure our border with Mexico!

My personal guess is the comparative cost, border v crime, would justify this move many times over, not to mention the value to national security in our fight against terrorism.

These are the very serious issues when you have an open border: Unchecked illegal human migration, Illegal narcotic shipments and the corruption it spreads, organized crime involvement, national security risks and terrorism, massive drains on various segments of the economy, generalized influence on rising crime and you also have; American families/children more at risk; Rising medical costs; Lower educational and economic output; Increased abortions, tax frauds, and out-of-wedlock child births and the drain this places on society and there are many more I could name...

If these issues don't mean enough for our Congress and the President to take firm action, what issues do?

How serious or competent can they be about anything that threatens the American population, if they can't even address these issues right in front of their face?

It's an outrage, it's an absolute national scandal of the highest order and its about time you people woke up, got mad and demanded these incompetent, overpaid fatcats in Congress do their job!

Progressive Visions of America Part II

by Tina Grazier

A more mainstream progressive vision can be found in a talk given by Bill Moyers titled For America’s Sake. Bill begins by painting a picture of the down and out and then ,i>progresses by taking pot shots at Reagan:

Here is the real political story, the one most politicians won't even acknowledge: the reality of the anonymous, disquieting daily struggle of ordinary people, including the most marginalized and vulnerable Americans…blah, blah, blah… searching for dignity and fairness against long odds in a cruel market world. Everywhere you turn you'll find people who believe they have been written out of the story. Everywhere you turn there's a sense of insecurity grounded in a gnawing fear that freedom in America has come to mean the freedom of the rich to get richer even as millions of Americans are dumped from the Dream.

Reagan's story of freedom superficially alludes to the Founding Fathers, but its substance comes from the Gilded Age, devised by apologists for the robber barons. It is posed abstractly as the freedom of the individual from government control--a Jeffersonian ideal at the root of our Bill of Rights, to be sure. But what it meant in politics a century later…is the freedom to accumulate wealth without social or democratic responsibilities and the license to buy the political system right out from under everyone else, so that democracy no longer has the ability to hold capitalism accountable for the good of the whole.

There are several points to be made here since this same old sob story has been used by democrats for decades. Reagan’s story of freedom was not superficial. It did rely on the notion that in America anyone can achieve his dream…and that to do so he must define it and work toward it responsibly with his own will, brains and energy. And Reagan didn’t believe, as progressives do, that most people can never achieve their dreams without the aid of some government program. Reagan’s story never meant “freedom to accumulate wealth without social or democratic, (I would call it civic) responsibility”. Indeed, the proof that this is pure fantasy is revealed in a new book, “Who Really Cares” by Arthur C. Brooks. According to Professor Brooks:

"If liberals and moderates gave blood at the same rate as conservatives, the blood supply of the United States would jump about 45 percent."

Mr. Brooks has said his research uncovered facts that were the opposite of what he expected to find. He checked them twice, just to be certain, and found that conservatives donate money to charity more often than liberals and at a higher percentage of their incomes even though liberal families average 6% higher incomes than conservative families. He found that conservatives donate more of their time as well.

If America was truly the unfair oppressive place that Bill asserts then the thousands upon thousands of rags to riches stories we have seen in America would never have happen. Folks like Ronald Reagan and Oprah Winfrey would never have been able to achieve their dreams. Astronauts would not have gone to the moon and beyond. Cell phones and flat screen TV’s would not exist. Cures and medicines would not be discovered and produced. America is vibrant with the contributions of Americans from all walks of life pursuing their own individual idea of happiness.

Bill’s Moyer's assertion that the conservative idea of freedom from government means “the license to buy the political system right out from under everyone else” is a fine example of a democrat source myth. He conveniently leaves the very progressive democrat elites in Hollywood donating thousands, even millions, to democrat coffers…and certainly activists like Mr. George Soros, from his mix of those buying political clout.

This vision of Americans living in a contented bliss of fiscal equality just doesn’t fly any more. People don’t all want the same things. They take charge of the affairs of their lives and succeed in different and varying degrees...by choice. Their success or failure is not dependent on their station in life or their personal finances, it is determined by their own desires and ambitions.

At the heart of our experience as a nation is the proposition that each one of us has a right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." As flawed in its reach as it was brilliant in its inspiration for times to come, that proposition carries an inherent imperative: "inasmuch as the members of a liberal society have a right to basic requirements of human development such as education and a minimum standard of security, they have obligations to each other, mutually and through their government, to ensure that conditions exist enabling every person to have the opportunity for success in life." Moyers quotes Paul Starr

Excuse me? “As flawed in it’s reach as it was brilliant in it’s inspiration…”? Is he saying the founders were silly dreamers who couldn’t possibly have known how much we would all need big government down the road? And here’s another corker, “…"inasmuch as the members of a liberal society have a right to basic requirements of human development…they have obligations to each other, mutually and through their government, to ensure that conditions exist enabling every person to have the opportunity for success in life." Enabling? He said, “enabling”! Isn’t that one of the things at the very heart of ADDICTION? Government as the enabler…now there’s a call to service and leadership!

Mr. Moyers goes on quoting from the deep well of liberal think:

" The free-market view "cannot provide us with a philosophy we find compelling or meaningful," John Schwarz writes. Nor does it assure the availability of economic opportunity "that is truly adequate to each individual and the status of full legal as well as political equality."

No Bill, it’s the Constitution that assures legal and political equality. The free market is a system of commerce that is open to participation by anyone. That’s why we call it “free”. But he continues and manages to use a great quote from Plutarch :

"…an imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics"

But once again he fails to acknowledge or include the many sources of all this disparity between rich and poor, not the least of which has been failed liberal government programs, institutions and ideals. Our public schools are not educating children in ways that support and further their future prospects. Welfare programs have broken up family structure and consigned generations of people to dependency and a limited, hopeless future. A hyped-up vision of what constitutes success consists mostly of dreams that young poorly educated kids absorb with the idea of being rich only by becoming a rock star or athlete…and isn’t that’s cool. The liberal idea that freedom means doing whatever you want, with whomever you want, whenever…without thought to civic impact has born a drug culture and an incredible divorce rate that has absolutely led to relational, spiritual and fiscal failure in peoples lives.
Blaming those who have put their energies into building a future, growing a company, obtaining an education or building a career, for the ills of the less fortunate is easy and convenient but it is flawed. It is, however, a great way to buy votes. Here comes the knife:

It would certainly help if at least as many people who believe, say, in a "literal devil" or that God sent George W. Bush to the White House also knew that the top 1 percent of households now have more wealth than the bottom 90 percent combined.

Yes Bill, and it would certainly help if those same people would realize that the top 1-5% of wage earners are busy feeding their hard earned cash to the government that you want to expand by paying about 90% of the taxes. It would also help if they understood that a well-paying job will likely be offered them by someone with money.
The progressive vision is one that says we are incapable of producing a satisfying life from our own vision, effort and means. It is a world designed to assuage guilt and stroke the infullfilled need to 'make a difference'. They design and invision fiscal equality eminating from a cold and insensitive government program taking the means from the rich by way of an unequal, complex and restrictive system of high taxes and fees. This good reader is NOT progress...it is instead, a way of division and, for the "less fortunate", an assignment to the poverty class.

Progressive Visions of America Part I

by Tina Grazier

“California, the nation-state, the harmonious state, the prosperous state, the cutting-edge state, becomes a model, not just for the 21st-century American society, but for the larger world.” Arnold Schwarzenegger quoted by Prof. Gar Alperovitz

“We have the economic strength, we have the population and the technological force of a nation-state.” Arnold Schwarzenegger quoted by Prof. Gar Aperovitz

I won’t try to crawl into the mind of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to figure out what he meant when he said these things but I was interested in the thoughts about the governors remarks expressed by Prof. Aperovitz in a

recent New York Times op-ed piece titled California Split. His is a progressive world and so the governors words were no doubt screened through his progressive vision for our possible future:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to have grasped the essential truth that no nation — not even the United States — can be managed successfully from the center once it reaches a certain scale.

California’s governor has also put his finger on a little discussed flaw in America’s constitutional formula. The United States is almost certainly too big to be a meaningful democracy.

A recent study by the economists Alberto Alesina of Harvard and Enrico Spolaore of Tufts demonstrates that the bigger the nation, the harder it becomes for the government to meet the needs of its dispersed population. Regions that don’t feel well served by the government’s distribution of goods and services then have an incentive to take independent action, the economists note.

It’s quite clear from these excerpts that Professor Alperovitz, and his buds at Harvard and Tufts, think of America differently than I do. Their vision is more like Venezuella under Chavez or even England under King George. “…the government’s distribution…”? Only a progressive would hold first and foremost the idea that our government’s purpose is to distribute goods and services. In light of this, the governor’s words must have seemed like Dorothy’s yellow brick road pointing the way toward home. His vision is that California might be the perfect state to take the lead and “devolve” away from mere statehood under the Constitution to form a “nation state”. He sites George F. Kennan who said the following about devolving nation states:

“while retaining certain of the rudiments of a federal government,” might yield a “dozen constituent republics, absorbing not only the powers of the existing states but a considerable part of those of the present federal establishment.”

Why must we break (devolve) into “nation states” or regions? Why not just acknowledge states rights and begin to devolve power away from the federal government and back to the 50 states as was originally intended by the founders? The answer, simply stated, is because progressives don’t really believe in smaller government. They believe in socialism…taking from those with means and giving to those with need, through a large overreaching federal government! Ahh, but here’s the rub…only with democrats in power. When republicans hold the reigns they look to “break away…or move away. As long as there are those who will not buckle to the authority of a socialist doctrine you can be sure that there will be those who propose ideas that include things like “devolution” into nation states.

I’m not one who has thought that certain members of the opposition “hate” America, but after reading this article I’m not so certain anymore. This man is as nonchalant about “devolving” regions of the country into “nation states” as one might be about how neighbors arrange tulips in their flower beds.

Part II - Walid Shoebat (ex-terrorist) and Muslim Students

by Jack Lee

I hope you had a chance to read part one of this story on Walid Shoebat . Now, as promised, I'm going to give you the opposing view as presented by the UC Davis Muslim Student Association (MSA). I think you will find their arguments interesting and it may shed a little light into the concerns of the Muslim-American community. They gave me a prepared statement and I will include that first and then my comments:

"We repudiate and unequivocally condemn terrorism, as a grave and serious crime that should be punished in the strictest means possible. We are concerned that a self-confessed "ex-terrorist" is walking

freely in the country, simply because he has converted to Christianity and supports this country's policies towards Israel. We call upon the FBI and DHW to investigate the claims regarding Shoebat's violent past and to see whether he disclosed this information when applying for his citizenship.

We also condemn the intentionally Islamophobic and erroneous association of Islam and violence that will result from the fear-mongering employed in the event's advertisements. We ask fellow students and community members to study the facts about Islam and reject hate-speech and propaganda."

The Mission of the MSA at UC Davis is to create an avenue for Muslim students to meet, exchange ideas, clarify misconceptions about Islam. The MSA hosts various events throughout the year." Shazeb Qadir, President End of statement.

When I was talking with the Muslim students one thing was clear, they all "said" they felt the same way as Shazeb, but when asked individually to articulate their grievances with Shoebat, about half of those I spoke with really didn't know much about the man and the others were just restating the position noted above. You have consider these kids were probably under a lot of peer pressure, which seems to be the case all over the Arab world so I can't say they were all being forthcoming about their true feelings. Individual dissent goes against the way they've been raised. The only answer that made any sense to them was that Shoebat must be an opportunist, exploiting his alleged ties to radical Muslims for big money. In their minds what else could it be? They knew Islam couldn't be as evil as he claimed, so he must be a fraud, they even doubted he ever had such ties to terrorism.

When asked why they doubted Shoebats terrorist ties, they couldn't give me a good answerI, but I felt it was mostly because they just didn't like what Shoebat said about Muslims and I can understand that, Shoebat was pretty rough on Muslims and they couldn't accept the criticism as being truthful. This was a denial pattern I've seen in a lot of protest groups where emotion often trumps facts. However, what was very positive about these students was their overall demeanor which conveyed a lot of sincerity about being non-violent. They wanted to be as open and communicative about their religion as it was culturally possible and I felt that was a good sign.

Their numbers outside Freeborn Hall were probably about 50 by the time event let out. As people exited the students followed a fairly well orchestrated plan that appeared to be led by an older middle eastern appearing male. I suspected he was an Imam when I saw him a few minutes earlier hold what looked like a prayer for the students that circled around him.

When I was wrapping up my conversations with the Muslim students, the consensus answer was, they were all still feeling the heat from 9-11 and in that sense they felt like victims of racial profiling. I said, "Isn't that the whole point of terrorism, to create suspicions and divisions among a population?" They all agreed to that point and the President of their group, Shazeb Qadir, said this is exactly why they want to keep communications open between their group and others in the community. At one point a Muslim male student said, "If the USA was attacked I would defend this country and other people (other Americans) don't get this!"

For the students to actually admit there was a threat to the USA by some Muslims radicals seems a breakthrough, given the sort of denial we've come to expect from the Muslim world. But, then this is a very moderate and mostly American born Muslim group.

The sad part is these students were good kids. They were about to launch themselves into mainstream American society as college graduates and here they were putting themselves at odds with Shoebat, a man that most other Americans seem think of as a sort of "truth" hero giving the ultimate insight into fanatical Muslim terrorism. For these students, here and at other college campus's, to take on Walid Shoebat and not also go on the offensive against terrorists other than Shoebat, makes their grievances against him appear disingenuous, even though I do not believe this is the case. I can appreciate in some small way the anger and resentment these young Muslims must feel towards the man, since Shoebat rails against the brutality he experienced that was passed off as fundamentalist doctrine. Worse yet, he does it as a former Muslim who has converted to becoming a Christian, which according to Sharia law is a crime of apostasy which often carries a death sentence.

It's hard to wrap your head around a death sentence for anyone over his/her religious beliefs... if you have a western mind or even an open mind in the 21st century. But, to put this in some sense of cultural context, imagine how you might feel if you were a very devout Catholic and a former Catholic Priest became a Pentecostal and went on to publicly say how rotten Catholicism was and what evil it fostered. Then imagine that he went on a popular public speaking tour denouncing all Catholics as a bunch of child molesters and published two books on the subject. You'd be pretty mad too and not likely too open to hearing what he had to say about your religion. This is the situation the Muslims students are caught up in, only its even worse for them because of their strict culture.

The clear way out of this conflict, where they might be thought of as potential terrorists when protesting Shoebat, is to acknowledge that radical fundamentalist philosophies do create hatred, bigotry and violence. But, do it publicly, not necessarily like Shoebat, but perhaps in some sort of context that they could live with it and yet not feel like they are selling out their religion. That's a real tough road for these students. They are caught in the middle between two cultures and no matter what they do, they won't satisfy either side. Fundamentalist Islamic terrorism is one big loser for them, their families and their religion...but, this day they can't come right out and say it in any sort of convincing way that's on par with their anger toward a guy like Shoebat. Maybe some day they will, but not this day.

Voter Fraud

by Tina Grazier

The next time democrats scream foul accusing the GOP of voter fraud and stealing elections keep
this story
in mind. You'll notice that the writer fails to mention any ties or associations with a political party. Here's a hint for you, Jesse Jackson has been known to “associate‿:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man who worked for an advocacy group that signs up new voters pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to voter registration fraud, the U.S. attorney's office said. *** Dale D. Franklin, 44, was hired by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, to work with Project Vote, another not-for-profit group that helps register voters.

So who is ACORN? You can find out quite a bit about the organization HERE and HERE. The following are a few excerpts from these two sites:

ACORN is a grassroots political organization that grew out of George Wiley's National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO), whose members in the late 1960s and early 70s invaded welfare offices across the U.S. -- often violently -- bullying social workers and loudly demanding every penny to which the law "entitled" them.

Today ACORN claims 175,000 dues-paying member families, and more than 850 chapters in 70 U.S. cities in 38 states. (The organization is also active in Canada and Mexico). It owns two radio stations, a housing corporation, and a law office, and maintains affiliate relationships with a host of trade-union locals. ACORN also runs schools where children are trained in class consciousness; a network of "boot camps" for training street activists; and operations that extort contributions from banks and other businesses under threat of racial violence and trumped-up civil rights charges

During the 2004 election, Mac Stuart was working as a coordinator for minority voter outreach for its voter registration effort in Miami-Dade County for ACORN. In the course of his job, Stuart saw ACORN workers copying voter registration form (which was illegal under Florida law) and segregating voter registration forms for Republicans that were not subsequently turned into the County.

In the 2004 election cycle, ACORN and its sister group Project Vote ran a nationwide voter mobilization drive that was marred by allegations of fraudulent voter registration, vote-rigging, voter intimidation, and vote-for-pay scams. ACORN's get-out-the-vote activists were implicated in schemes that included the falsification and destruction of thousands of voter registration forms, and the registering of convicted felons even in states where felons are ineligible to vote.

Since ACORN is a private corporation, it does not divulge its finances. Further complicating any effort to calculate ACORN's income is the fact that it operates an unknown number of front groups, many of which conceal their relationship to ACORN.

The article, “ACORN and the Money Tree‿ by Meghan Clyne in National Review offers a well researched view into the funding sources for this huge umbrella organization:

‿… the group claims as its purpose helping low- and middle-income Americans — through initiatives ranging from improving urban public schools, to providing counseling on how to avoid "predatory lending," to increasing the availability of "affordable housing." Most of these programs are conducted locally, by state-level ACORN organizations — which are often set up as 501(c)3 nonprofit entities distinct from the national ACORN umbrella, a 501(c)4 lobbying organization. Sounds benign enough — except that, according to Bob Huberty, executive vice president of the Capital Research Center , these tax-exempt 501(c)3s "have no reason for existence other than to get grants from the government and foundations." They are, essentially, an ACORN front for asking Uncle Sam to subsidize political activity.‿

For the tax year beginning July 1, 2002, and ending June 30, 2003, ACORN Housing Corp.'s 990 Form shows a total of $1,710,203 received in government grants (the year before, the total was $1,977,306).

…what kind of return is the government getting on its investment? *** The EPI (Employment Policies Institute) study documents ACORN's involvement in an $850,000 labor-union embezzlement scheme in the late 1990s; in 2003, ACORN was found to have violated the National Labor Relations Act and was ordered to "rehire and pay restitution to employees terminated for attempting to form a union." (ACORN's in-house union-busting starkly contradicts its prescriptions for private-sector unionization, and is especially two-faced considering that ACORN's chief organizer and co-founder — Wade Rathke — is also the chief organizer of Local 100 of the Service Employees International Union in New Orleans.)***ACORN's hypocrisy also extends to its stand on the minimum wage. While it has often attempted to force minimum-wage increases on private businesses through ballot initiatives and local ordinances, ACORN tried to exempt itself from California's minimum-wage requirements. According to EPI, "ACORN argued that being forced to pay higher wages would mean that they would hire fewer employees — the very dilemma faced by businesses. Incredibly, ACORN stated that paying its employees a lower wage would allow them to be more sympathetic to the low- and moderate-income families they were attempting to help. ACORN argued that abiding by the state minimum wage would limit their ability to promote their agenda and would therefore be a violation of their First Amendment rights.

Misconceptions About Libertarians

New contribution from Jeff:

There is a general misconception about Libertarians, especially by Republicans, that I feel compiled to clear up. People assume that we Libertarians advocate drug use and support the legalization of drugs out of self interest.

I know how nicely conservatives will defend that 2nd Amendment, and how quick they point to statistics, the Constitution, American history and so forth. And that's a good thing, for they are right.

And Liberals want to ban guns and blame manufacturers, while exaggerating the dangers of them.

For the previous sentence, substitute the words "Conservative" for "Liberals," and "drugs" for "guns," and you have the same faulty reasoning for the left as well as the right. Conservatives, please use your power of logic and apply it to what you preach-personal responsibility. Then take the next step: ask yourself if spending tens of billions of dollars on the futile "Drug War" is fiscally conservative. Then, go get some real statistics, and pour over them (this may be eye-opening even to the most bias "drug warrior"). Finally, go to the Constitution, read the 9th and 10th Amendments. If you ignore the Constitution, real statistics, personal responsibility and blame inanimate objects, be aware that you're using the same method as Liberals. And it's wrong.

Again, Libertarians only advocate personal responsibility, not drugs. It only appears to be an important plank of the Libertarian philosophy because it's the one big thing Conservatives keep trippin' on.

Jeff

I want to thank Mike Wacker for his suggestion to watch Maurice McTique's speech to the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. It was great to hear so much common sense in one 45min session. If you are interested in what would happen if we actualy implemented the suggestions of men like Milton Freidman you need to watch this!!!

Type in www.uccs.edu/~csgi/mctigue2004august.shtml....if that fails type in "Rolling Back Government" and it will be the first link.

Thanks again Mike.

A Minor Injustice

by Jack Lee

parking.jpg Metered overtime parking in the City of Chico will cost you $15 and that's bad enough, but, IF you fail to pay it within 15 days, you will be charged another $30 !

Why the huge $30 penalty for a $15 ticket? Well, it seems this is the "lowest penalty" set by the City Council and it applies to fines starting out at $15 and all the way up to $250. That makes the least of all City Code infractions (overtime parking) the highest penalized and that makes no sense to me whatsoever.

People living on social security likely pay their bills once a month and that means they will pay a late penalty if they don't pay that parking ticket within the two week window and the elderly/disabled can least afford to pay this fine, let alone a whopping 2X penalty...thats really unfair. But, don't talk "unfair" to our liberal city council, they approved this injustice.

It gets worse: Fail to pay the $45 and City will turn you in to the credit bureau and stop you from registering your car next year and all over a few minutes of overtime parking....me thinks this is a little too "Cool Hand Luke".

By the way the cities of Oroville, Paradise and Gridley have abandoned their metered parking as being bad for PR and cost ineffective. The Chico Downtown Merchants Association might want to take this parking fine/double penalty up with the City Council, because it's just another reason for consumers to shop the malls where the parking is free.

From Terrorist to Peace Activist - Part 1

by Jack Lee

walid2.gif Walid Shoebat, pictured on the left, is a former member of the PLO who grew up hating Jews. According to his autobiography, his grandfather was the Muslim Mukhtar (chieftain) of Beit Sahour-Bethlehem and a friend of Haj-Ameen Al-Husseni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and notorious friend of Adolf Hitler in WWII. Walid's great grandfather, Abdullah Ali Awad-Allah, was also a fighter and close associate of both Abdul Qader and Haj Amin Al-Husseini, who led the Palestinians against Israel.

Today, many in this world would like to see him dead, ... not for his terrorist activities, but because he renounced terrorism! Shoebat's life is an amazing story that comes with a warning.

Walid Shoebat is the author of "Why I Left Jihad" and he's currently on a lecture tour that includes a number of California Universities. His new book, "Why We Want To Kill You" is about to be released this month. I caught up with him last night at UC Davis, where he was the honored guest speaker, sponsored by the Foundation For the Defense of Democracy.

Security at the event was to say the least, obvious and intense. And justifiably so, given the recent death threats against Shoebat. Attendees were treated like airport passengers and with the exception of the media, cameras or recorders were NOT allowed inside. Thanks to the high level of security the crowd filtered slowly into the 1300 seat auditorium which caused the show to open about 25 minutes late. This gave me an opportunity to interview some guests, that included a few Muslim students that occupied an entire center section near the press seating.

It was hard not to notice each Muslim student wore red duck tape on their right arms, which they later used to cover their mouths when Shoebat began speaking. The consensus answer was, this was to protest the extent to which their voices were being shut down by on campus racist groups such as the group that set up this event. When I asked for specifics exactly how they were being denied their free speech or were victims of bigotry I didn't get one example, but some vague generalities. I moved on to ask why they had a problem with a reformed terrorist and the consensus answer was, he's a phoney and a hate monger, and he stereotypes all Muslims as terrorists. More on this later. Now it was time for Shoebat to take the stage and he came out of a side door about 10 feet away from my "press" box.

Just before Shoebat took the podium to a nearly packed house, the MC reminded the audience of the First Amendment and that it was illegal to engage in certain disruptive activities and that violators would be arrested and prosecuted. The majority of the crowd gave a loud and extended applause! The Muslim students simply sat silent and observed. When Walid Shoebat walked on stage to take the podium he received a warm welcome with most of the audience, a fair mix of students and adults, standing. At this time the Muslim students in the center seats removed the red tape from their shoulders and placed it over their mouths. As Walid started to speak they stood up for a moment, made their presence known and then sat down.

Shoebat's speech summarized his childhood growing up in Jordan and later in Isreal and the occupied territory among Palestinians. He focused on his public school education where he was said he [indoctrinated] to hate Jews from day one and his eventual evolution of hate led him to being a radical Muslim terrorist. He concluded with his view of radical Islam, its growth and why we need to fight it.

Walid recalled one of the Arab public school songs he sang, that opened with "Arabs are the beloved and Jews are the dogs..." and he sang a verse. He said he routinely began each school day singing the praises of Arabs and their righteous struggle against the evil Jews and against Israel. He explained, often graphic detail, that every facet of his Arab childhood yearswas inundated by hate speech against the Jews and this included the most incredible stories of so-called Jewish atrocities, for example how they feasted on children or ate the flesh torn from the bodies of their Arab victims. He said of course such stories which often took on the dimensions of the movie "Night of the Living Dead" were preposterous, but to a young child it seemed only too real....too believable!

Shoebat gave example after example of the brutality and injustices he witnessed as he grew into adulthood as a Muslim. "My friend Jamal Hanouneh, for example, his brother, Basem Hanouneh, suffered a horrible fate. His body was found dead near the military camp in Beit Sahur, mutilated and with his penis cut off. When the news circulated through town, everyone blamed the Israeli military for the crime. Twenty years later, his real killers were discovered. The sons of Bishara Qumsiyeh (Mazen's relatives) while drunk, confessed the whole gruesome details. Of course, no one acknowledged the lie perpetrated against the Israelis who had nothing to do with the crime. It got worse, the two brothers also confessed to another unsolved mystery – the murder of my first Bible teacher in third grade, an elderly single lady Mrs. Christa from Germany, who was raped and mutilated by the two brothers."

He denounces the bigotry and violence he experienced as he quoted the former Israeli Prime Minister, Golda Meir, "Peace can only come when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us!"

Shoebat said as his Muslim fundamentalist experience increased, so did the numbers of moral juxtapositions that came from his perspective having both a Christian and Muslim parent and it weighed on his conscience. On one side he was told he had to fight because his land had been stolen by the Jews and he was part of a holy war to regain his country and on the other he was trying to be at peace with himself and with the others that lived around him that did not seem to be the threat he had been told.

His inner dilemma continued as he became part of the secret network of terrorist activists, which included bombing of Israeli targets. The contrast he experienced between Muslim v Western ideologies was never more apparent than when he escalated his role in the PLO as a teenager sent on his first bombing mission.

Shoebat began to see what his peers in the Muslim world apparently did not. He saw that Jews were not the abomination and scourge on the world he had been taught, they were just people like himself, he began to question his teachers of the Koran and he had doubts about the words of the Prophet Mohammed. He said in the United States you can question your religion, you can even be critical of your religion, but in the Arab world this would eventually cost him everything, even his right to live in his own land. He said in this respect, the Muslim fundamentalists had taken away "his" land, not the Jews. As Shoebat explained, "the day I converted to Christianity was the day I really lost my land!" As he noted, this is one of the many injustices that now motivates him to speak out against fundamentalist Islam and their terrorism for jihad.

The audience gave Shoebat a standing ovation when he said this and spoke about how he cherishes his right to say what he thinks in the United States without fear from the community around him or from the government. This was among the many things that helped him turn away from the fundamentalist ways and terrorism. In stark contrast the Muslim students sat silent, but later on stood several times in unison, red tape still across their mouths, when Shoebat engaged in more criticizes of Islamic doctrine or the Prophet Mohammed.

Shoebat painted a picture of an Arab world heavily influenced by fundamentalist extremism, where fantastic sums of oil money is used to buy influence in western society and allies on college campuses to aide in the global movement of conquest. He said, "You should remember this word, look it up on the internet, it is H-U-D-N-A!" And this is what I found when I looked on the net, "Hudna has a distinct meaning to Islamic fundamentalists, well-versed in their history: The prophet Mohammad struck a legendary, ten-year hudna with the Quraysh tribe that controlled Mecca in the seventh century. Over the following two years, Mohammad rearmed and took advantage of a minor Quraysh infraction to break the hudna and launch the full conquest of Mecca, the holiest city in Islam.

When Yassir Arafat infamously invoked Mohammad's hudna in 1994 to describe his own Oslo commitments "on the road to Jerusalem," the implication was clear. As Mideast expert Daniel Pipes explained, Arafat was asserting to his Islamic brethren that he will, "when his circumstances change for the better, take advantage of some technicality to tear up existing accords and launch a military assault on Israel." Indeed, this is precisely what occurred in Sept. 2000 when Arafat & Co. launched a terror assault upon Israeli citizens.

As for Hamas, they have proven time and again their commitment to a tactical hudna — replenishing their strength during the quiet periods, then returning with increased deadliness." http://www.honestreporting.com/articles/critiques/Hudna_With_Hamas.asp)

Shoebat concluded by saying that the Islamic fundamentalist threat is a global threat and present real dangers within the USA where many fundamentalists exist and spread jihad.

There were so many facets to this story it's hard to do justice to them all in the brevity of this blog space, however I hope I have given you enough information to make you aware of the importance of what this former terrorist, turned peace activist, has to say. For more on Shoebat and his books check out this site. (http://www.shoebat.com/index.php)

Part 2 of this story will conclude with my interviews with Muslims students, before and after Shoebat's lectrure. They have a different point of view, but don't rush to judge them, what they have to say might surprise you. That article will be out on Friday.

What Comes Around

by Tina Grazier

I remember fondly the "old liberal cause" of NO NUKES. Martin Sheen himself showed up quite often to protest in front of the gates at the Lawrence Livermore Lab. The rag tag bunch of twenty or so t-shirt and bell bottom clad sign carrying screamers paraded in a circle for a day and really thought they had "made a difference". Barbra Streisand acting boldly, held her first concert ever, inviting friends and neighbors to her backyard for the outdoor event. She used the concert to announce the creation of a foundation dedicated to the elimination of nukes. She generously donated her Malibu compound to the "cause"
(...and, I imagine, avoided taxes at the same time).

Well, folks, what comes around does indeed go around. No, Malibu hasn't experienced a nuclear event and the lab in Livermore is still in business, but those pigs that fly have definitely come home to "roost". All the hand-wringing concern over developments in nuclear science has now presented the anti-nuke crowd a dilemma of greenhouse proportions. One of their own has caved on the big one. Sadly the story in Spiegel Magazine is closed, but here's the gist of it:

James Lovelock is attracting attention again with his provocative ideas. The former hero of the environmental movement has called for an end to "green romanticism." The only way to delay climate catastrophe, says the environmental guru, is through the massive expansion of nuclear energy.

I can't believe I'm saying this about a "greenie" but, I think his point is well taken. Another story this week announced that American nuclear energy facilities will not need additional protective measures. It seems we built them to withstand just about anything. Good old American know-how!

Happy Birthday Mr. President

reagan_pencil.gifYou Speak to Us Still...

by Tina Grazier

"Today, in their memory, and for all who fought here, we celebrate the triumph of democracy. We reaffirm the unity of democratic people who fought a war and then joined with the vanquished in a firm resolve to keep the peace. From a terrible war we learned that unity made us invincible; now, in peace, that same unity makes us secure. We sought to bring all freedom-loving nations together in a community dedicated to the defense and preservation of our sacred values. Our alliance, forged in the crucible of war, tempered and shaped by the realities of the post-war world, has succeeded. In Europe, the threat has been contained, the peace has been kept. Today, the living here assembled -- officials, veterans, citizens -- are a tribute to what was achieved here 40 years ago. This land is secure. We are free. These things are worth fighting and dying for." Ronald Reagan-40th Anniversary of D-Day

"We, the members of the New Republican Party, believe that the preservation and enhancement of the values that strengthen and protect individual freedom, family life, communities and neighborhoods and the liberty of our beloved nation should be at the heart of any legislative or political program presented to the American people." Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911 - 2004)

"[Ronald Reagan] believed that people were the most important resource and that our natural resources should be used in ways that would benefit mankind. Ronald Reagan knew that a growing economy and an improving environment would go hand-in-hand. He understood the absolute necessity of employing sound science to management of natural resources and environmental standards. He rejected the Socialist view of environmental management and the regulatory scheme of 'one size fits all' regulations. He supported the principle of federalism in environmental management and was strongly committed to the principle of protection of property rights. And Reagan knew that environmental policies that emanate from liberty are the most successful." Becky Norton Dunlop
