Pink Rules
by Tina Grazier
A couple of very bright boys in Nova Scotia, Travis Price and David Shepherd, Grade 12, took it upon themselves to support an underclassman at their high school who had been mistreated by bullies for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. Their plan was to get their classmates to wear pink shirts to school on the same day and over 400 of them complied. The effort was chronicled in an internet story and was soon picked up by major media in America and Europe.
While Travis and David appreciate the recognition, "we don’t want to move the focus from the situation onto us," said David, who is leaning toward joining the RCMP after high school.
"People say, ‘You’re celebrities, you’ll go down in the history books of the school,’ but that’s not what we set out to do."
"People say you’re famous, heroes or celebrities," added Travis, who plans to take criminology next year. "We’re not, we’re just two kids who stood up for a cause."
Boys standing up for someone being harassed by bullies, eh? This sounds vaguely familiar….hmmm…big boys have been known to do the same…and these inexperienced yutes came up with this on their own? It might just be that the warrior spirit is alive and well all over the world.
Cindy Sheehan, and Code Pink, take a lesson!
