Dynasties In Goverment - You Should Care!
by Jack Lee
Let's say President Bush decided that he was going to use his considerable influence to support a particular candidate for President in 08, long before the primary season even began and to the chagrin of his fellow Republican contenders. Would you approve? Of course not and Presidents wouldn't do it because there is a long standing tradition that says they don't as a matter of high ethics.
It's down here in the lower elections for state office where ethics takes a back seat to expediency and that my friends is not only unfair, but it is dangerous.
Allowing an incumbent to sponsor their successor risks creating a dynasty where power is passed from one selected person to the next, not one elected person to the next. This has the effect of a grossly tilted playing field where the money and the power are all at one end. Further, incumbents ganging up to defeat challengers to an open seat defeats every reason for term limits. It can only undermine the democratic process and therefore it should be illegal. It is clearly unethical as all our past Presidents would attest, it also violates the spirit of both political parties stated policy of not endorsing a candidate where there is two or more same party candidates vying for an open seat before the primary election.
How many of you know where this is happening right now in the State of California? Hint: Take a look at your own Assembly District.

Isn't former President Clinton doing exactly that? He may have skipped a few years, but he is clearly strongly endorsing a successor, and a relative at that. In fact, it seems like a circumvention of the 22nd Amendment, since both Clintons claim that Hilary was a "co-President."

You bring up a very good point Jack!

Dan I suppose if there was ever going to be an exception to the ethics rule it had to come from the Clintons! lol
Although I see it as somewhat forgiveable since he is married to her. So its not quite the breech as a sitting president doing it.

I find it odd that bill thinks hillary will be a good President, when he obviously hasn't been satisfied with the Job she has done as Wife!
And lets see, in that capacity, she hasn't had to write a mortgage or rent check, drive her child to school, fill her car up with gas, or apparently tip the people who serve her at restaurants, (this upset me, I used to wait tables)
I guess they can't help it, their actions always betray their own personal agendas, and the way they really see us, the people.

You don’t seem to be able to get past not being endorsed by an incumbent. Frankly, you are starting to come off as a spoilsport. You would make it a crime for an Assemblyman to support a candidate of his choice the same as anyone else? What about free speech?
Jack writes: “It is clearly unethical as all our past Presidents would attest”.
Pypr answers: History doesn’t support this claim. Presidents have indeed supported their successors. Teddy R. supported his and then turned against him in a third party move that elected the opposition party.

Pypr I'm sorry you have taken it the wrong way, a "spoilsport" I am not. But, when people believe in something they tend to beat the drum on that issue and this issue is not about a mere endorsement. I wish it were. It's about a serious tactical advantage that eliminates virtually all would-be challengers.
How is that good for democracy, you tell me?

I am not a democrat and we don’t live in a democracy, Thank God. We live in a constitutional republic where all our rights are subject to the whims of a majority vote.
I have a First Amendment right not to have the government place limits on whose opinion I may consider in deciding who to vote for.
Rick Keene has the First Amendment right to express his opinion [endorsement] on whom the next 3rd District Assemblyman should be.
How is it that you did not know that your former BCRCC cohorts [current 3rd & 2nd Assembly Districts COS] would have candidates in this race? Did you think that they were just going to give up their COS positions for the next two years? A flaw in the current term limits law, 6 years Assembly and 8 years in the Senate forces experienced political staffers to groom a replacement bosses if they want to keep their lucrative political positions.
With $700k and $500K in their Senate campaign accounts neither Keene nor LaMalfa is going away no matter what happens in your race. So how is your race a “proxy fight”?

Pypr answers: we are talking about Clif Wagner here, right?

Pypr, you're a good conservative, but I have to call it like I see em and my candidacy rests on that. If you support Rick or Dan, it's ok. They are good people. And I like to believe I am too.
But, good people can have their issues and they should be allowed to express them and still support each other on common causes greater than themselves.
Maybe some day you will run for public office and you will have a chance for a new perspective on the issues I have raised. It could be really enlightening to see it as a candidate. I know I've learned a lot. It's been a real humbling experience and Bernie was sure right when he said, "you better have real thick skin" as a candidate. I've found that too true, especially when it came to some of my friends that I thought would back me and backed someone else..ouch that hurts! Running for office is a great way to find out who your true friends really are, but then again if they really voted their conscience I would forgive them.
Well, this topic has been left far behind the rest and many more issues have replaced it. Let's move on to bigger and better things shall we?
Good luck and keep contributing, your views are important to me. You're a good person with a lot of potential to do good things.
