Lobbying-A First Amendment Right

The word “lobbyist” is enough to make otherwise calm and collected folks pull their hair and gnash their teeth…activities that involve influence, money, and ethics can have that effect on a person. Recent allegations of corrupt practices by lobbyists and politician have added to the burn in our bellies and may have played a sizable role in the defeat of republicans in the last election. But did you know that lobbying is protected by the First Amendment? That’s right, the First Amendment stipulates the people’s right "to petition the Government for a redress of grievances," and this is precisely what most lobbyists do for their clients. As I’ve said before, the government’s ability to tax, regulate and restrict or mandate activities that negatively effect businesses and individuals must be balanced. The founders wisely gave the people a way to fight back.

I urge anyone who is interested in this subject to read the article, “In Defense of Lobbying,” by Charles Krauthammer in the Washington Post online. It offers insight into the differences between “good” lobbying and “bad” lobbying and also takes a peek into how the press sometimes fails to differentiate between the two. He even provides a defense of “bad” lobbying that goes straight to the point about abuse of this important right:

…You wouldn't need to be seeking advantage if the federal government had not appropriated for itself in the 20th century all kinds of powers, regulations, intrusions and manipulations (often through the tax code) that had never been presumed in the 19th century and certainly were never imagined by the Founders. What appears to be rent-seeking is thus redress of a larger grievance -- insufferable government meddling in what had traditionally been considered an area of free enterprise.

The more we arm ourselves with knowledge the better prepared we are to make wise choices in our leadership. When we are informed and knowlegable we are better positioned to demand that our leaders act in an ethical manner.

Looks like we could see as much as a 600 billion dollar loss in sub-prime mortgages or so says UBS. AIG tanked today posting its largest quarterly loss ever of 5.3 billion, again due to sub-prime mortgages. The stock market doesn't like this news and it's down over 230 points at midday.

Have you noticed that MSNBC, and in particular Keith Olbermann, is treating Hillary like her last name was Bush? Olbermann refers to the Clinton Nation as troubled, anxious, insecure and disheartened. He does softball questions for Obama, whom he affectionately calls, "The Obamenon!" and accuses the Republicans and Bush of constantly engaging in a tactic of divide and conquer and exploiting an irrational fear on the heels of 9/11 among other things. I guess its why I never watch him.

The New York Times says Republicans are gearing up to launch a smear campaign on Obama. Yeah and what are democrats preparing for McCain? This also makes me wonder what the Times calls what they have been printing about McCain lately? Today the NYT says McCain may not be eligible to become President because he was born in Panama! Nobody but the Times is interested in this, it pure mud. McCain's was born to a military family and he is a natural born citizen, but the Times doesn't care about doing its due diligence when it comes to reporting mud about McCain.

Hillary and Obama were slugging it out in Ohio when Obama stole the show with this one, "She says speeches don’t put food on the table, you know what? NAFTA didn’t put food on the table, either.” Later, he went further, claiming that Ohio’s workers have “watched job after job after job disappear because of bad trade deals like NAFTA.” He knows what works and he is a true populist, but what will his tax the rich plan do for America? I get the feeling his supporters think they are electing Robin Hood. But, will eliminating corporate write-offs and raising their taxes be good for employment? Duh-uh.

Sergeant Wayne Leyde, 26, from the Washington National Guard bought a lucky scratch-and-win lottery ticket...won a million bucks. Yep, and now he is planning to return to Iraq for his 3rd tour! He said, "I decided to walk into a local Zip Trip. I got a Coke and beef jerky and walked up to the counter and thought I'd pick up a few scratch tickets and try my luck." Let's hope his luck holds up overseas.

A barrel of oil just hit a new record, $103. Are we looking at $4 a gallon here soon? If we are, you better think twice about buying that motor home that gets 6 mpg...cheaper to buy a motel room! I'll just have to start riding my Harley more; it's a lot cheaper to operate than my Buick and more fun too. Good thing the warm weather is approaching! Bush's answer to high oil prices is to produce more oil, not be more frugal. Than right answer is be both.

Barack Claims He’ll “Change” Foreign Policy

Will the American people buy into Barack Obama’s notion that a president can charm a snake? It’s one of the fundamental questions that require an answer before we choose our next president.

This morning President Bush was asked in a news conference about Barack H. Obama’s argument that the president “should never fear to negotiate” with America’s enemies and specifically Raul Castro the new leader of Cuba. The President made his experienced position quite clear:

“…It'll send a discouraging message to those who wonder whether America will continue to work for the freedom of prisoners. It'll give great status to those ... who have suppressed human rights and human dignity.” ** “The idea of embracing a leader who's done this, without any attempt on his part to ... release prisoners and free their society, would be counterproductive and send the wrong signal.” ** “Sitting down at the table, having your picture taken with a tyrant such as Raul Castro, for example, lends the status of the office and the status of our country to him. He gains a lot from it by saying, 'Look at me. I'm now recognized by the president of the United States.'”

Libertarians v. Conservatives

Republican Party was a union of traditional conservatives, libertarians, objectivists and the usual hodge podge of moderates which can be found in any political party.

The vast majority of our intellectual platform came from the conservatives and libertarians since moderates generally just take from others what sounds good to them and develop their own luke warm positions.

On the conservative side you had men such as Russell Kirk, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan. These individuals were influenced by people such as John Adams, and Edmund Burke.

On the libertarian and objectivist side you had people such as Milton Friedman, David Nolan, and Ayn Rand. These individuals were heavily influenced by people such as John Locke and Adam Smith.

In 1971 many libertarians split form the Republican Party and formed their own, national, Libertarian Party. Since then they have sought to advance their political agenda apart from the Republican Party.

This break took place in large part over three key policy issues.

Angelina Jolie on Iraq

Angelina Jolie recently made a trip to Iraq as a goodwill ambassador with the UN High Commisioner for Refugees (UNHCR). While there, she spoke with the local people as well as Army Gen. David Petraeus and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. I’ve posted her concluding remarks below but urge you to read the entire article posted in the Washington Post online:

My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis. ** Today's humanitarian crisis in Iraq -- and the potential consequences for our national security -- are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won't explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder? ** What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made. In fact, we should step up our financial and material assistance. ** UNHCR has appealed for $261 million this year to provide for refugees and internally displaced persons. That is not a small amount of money -- but it is less than the U.S. spends each day to fight the war in Iraq. I would like to call on each of the presidential candidates and congressional leaders to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy. ** As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible. ** It seems to me that now is the moment to address the humanitarian side of this situation. Without the right support, we could miss an opportunity to do some of the good we always stated we intended to do.

Where else but San Francisco City Hall could a 10-foot-long wheelchair ramp wind up costing $1 million? Thanks to a maze of bureaucratic indecision and historic restrictions, taxpayers may shell out $100,000 per foot to make the Board of Supervisors president's perch in the historic chambers accessible to the disabled. What's more, the little remodel job that planners first thought would take three months has stretched into more than four years - and will probably mean the supervisors will have to move out of their hallowed hall for five months...

This is the bureaucratic nightmare of government…still want to put them in charge of healthcare?

Voters beware of a newly formed liberal activist group, “Iraq Campaign 2008” that will soon be spewing lies and distortions all over the election neighborhood.

Liberal activist groups MoveOn.org, USAction, Americans United for Change, VoteVets, and the Service Employees International Union, along with former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife, joined forces Monday to announce a $20-million public awareness and lobbying campaign to promote a perceived link between the war in Iraq and a weakening U.S. economy. ** "This campaign will raise awareness of the unseen costs of Bush's singular focus on the war in Iraq and his failure to focus on strengthening the American economy, schools, health care and real security, and use the political energy and outrage that the campaign generates to drive Congress to end the war and to get out the anti-war vote," said a written statement released by the campaign.

Strange Story: Police Nab Drunk Driver

Recently a police officer parked near a bar in rural Oregon. After last call the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated that he could barely walk.

The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off.

Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off -- it was a fine, dry summer night -- flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons' vehicles left. At last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road.

The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test. To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all !!!

Dumbfounded, the officer said, I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the police station. This breathalyzer equipment must be broken."

"I doubt it," said the man in a clear voice, "Tonight I'm the designated decoy."

An Iraqi Says, “Bush Saved Us From Tyranny”

I was reading the blog “Politico” this evening. The post, GOP Sen.: Iraq bill "a bullet right in the hearts of our troops," highligted remarks by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison on the democrat proposal to withdraw our troops from Iraq within 120 days. When it comes to Iraq, and the war effort in general, the democrats always sing a one note tune so there was really nothing unexpected in the post. A comment from an Iraqi citizen did catch my eye:

Ima Iraqi Christian citizen who is temporarily in the United States for some medical treatment donated by your Country (Thank You very much) I want to tell you that the American troops, your sons and daughters) that are in Iraq are a very good representative for your Country. They are very professional and friendly to our people. I can only hope that one day our people can have a military like yours. It breaks my heart that many in your Country would abandon our people and your soldiers sacrifice. Your President Bush has saved us from tyranny. - Posted By: Ima | February 26, 2008 at 07:33 PM

A few lines down one of our “sons and daughters,” responded in a way that reflects the kind and gracious things Ima said about them:

Ima from Iraq, I pray that your medical treatment goes well while you are in the USA. Do not worry about the ignorant opinions of the posters above. They consider themselves "liberal" although they dont even know what the word means. They lie about the Iraqi successes due to their own petty political goals. I am proud to save that I served in your Country and I found the people to be very kind and hospitable. I too lament that some in our country want to abandon the Iraqi people, especially when we have come so far. I have to admit that I much prefer the general attitude and respect shown by these two posters who were actually involved to the nasty positions of certain representatives on the left, the Code Pinko’s and the Move-On Dot Ogre types. They put a face on America that makes me proud of my country and proud of our military. How about you?

Not A Good News Day In Business

I found a series of business articles on the net today that won't make you feel warm and fuzzy about the future, but it's information you should know to be proactive and prepared instead of being caught by surprise and defenseless. To sum it up we're looking at real inflation concerns that are sparked by low interest rates the feds are using to heat up the economy. We're still seeing a nationwide retreat in housing prices and some very serious retreats in SoCal which will eventually find it's way into NorCal among other red flags, like consumer confidence dropping fast.

SoCal Home Prices Drop

2/14/08 L.A. Times: Low interest rates, falling prices and promises of government relief were not enough to slow the pace of Southern California's housing downturn, which hit a new bottom last month.

Home Loan Applications Down Sharply

Announcements that U.S. mortgage applications are down and the Consumer Price Index is up are ominous signs that the economy is cooling. Investors and consumers are tugging at their collars over news that fewer houses will become homes and those homes will probably gonna hold less stuff.

On Tuesday the government announced the Producer Price Index rose 1.0% in January, while core inflation, stripping out food and energy costs, rose 0.4%. The PPI measures inflation pressures before products reach the consumer.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Consumer confidence fell to a five-year low in February and expectations slumped to a 17-year trough in a tightening jobs market, a new survey showed, fueling fears the economy was already in recession.

The Conference Board said on Tuesday its index of consumer sentiment fell to 75.0 in February from a downwardly revised 87.3 in January, originally reported as 87.9.

Clinton's communications director, Howard Wolfson, delivered some really heated criticism of the press… I think it is true that every time the Obama campaign in this campaign has attacked Senator Clinton in the worst kind of personal ways, attacked her veracity, attacked her credibility, said that she would say or do anything to get elected, the press has largely applauded him. When we have attempted to make contrasts with Senator Obama, we have been criticized for it.

Home Sales Hit 9 Year Low

WASHINGTON (AP) - "Sales of existing homes fell to the lowest level in nearly a decade in January while the median price for a home dropped for the fifth straight month.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that sales of single-family homes and condominiums dropped by 0.4 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.89 million units, the slowest sales pace on records going back to 1999.

Last week I said the following in the comments section to my post, ‘UK Single Pay Medical Deemed “Deadly”’:

There is definitely something wrong when nearly half of the population of America has come to think it’s OK to force someone else to pay for their healthcare. It is sad that they think it’s OK for a dictatorial, strong-arm government policy to make the rich, corporations, or their next door neighbor to pay instead. What’s next, their mortgage or rent? How about car payments? Maybe they should just invoice government for their grocery bills as well.

“What’s next, their mortgage or rent?” I asked with a bit of cynicism. It should have caused red flags, bells and whistles…maybe even a few fireworks to go off in my head. You're not gonna believe this...

Special Forces in Iraq ( Spezialtruppen )

The Discovery "Military" Channel has an episode now running on Special Operations. They compare special ops of WWII to what happened in Iraq during Gulf 1 and it's a pretty amazing story. In particular the Discovery Channel focused on the missions of the 3rd and 10th SF groups with their ODA teams and specialized vehicles in pinning down Saddam’s armor on the Northern front.

As you will recall at the last minute Turkey bowed to pressure from Muslims mobs and denied port entry to the US 4th Division. Because of that, Gen. Tommy Franks had to completely change his battle plan and shifted the duty of the 4th Div. to our Special Forces units already in place behind enemy lines. Although heavily outnumbered and outgunned the SF units had one advantage, their ability to use what is termed as a "force multiplier" and this allowed the 12 man SF ODA teams to recruit and arm indigenous Kurdish fighters to raise their 12 man teams to a an effective force of 4 to 5 hundred combatants, lead by our SF soldiers.

Our elite SF units (about a battalion size) working with Kurds and British Special Ops teams did what the entire 4th Infantry Division was planning to do and did it perfectly. SF units even took on an Iraqi tank assault with basically light vehicles equipped with Javelin missiles and turned the tanks back after knocking out 6 of them in minutes.

Forward SF observers made sure roads to Baghdad were clear prior to invasion by concealing themselves for several weeks inside enemy territory in special HIDE encampments that went totally undetected by Iraqi forces. It's a pretty amazing story, so I hope you get a chance to watch this Special Operations episode of Battle Plan, it will give you a glimpse of what our Army Special Forces units can do!

Unsere SF Ausleseeinheiten (über eine Bataillon-Größe), mit Kurden und britischen Speziellen Ops Mannschaften arbeitend, taten, was die komplette 4. Infanterie-Abteilung plante zu tun und es vollkommen tat. SF-Einheiten nahmen sogar einen irakischen Zisterne-Angriff mit grundsätzlich leichten Fahrzeugen ausgestattet mit Speer-Raketen an und ließen die Zisternen nach dem Herausschlagen von 6 von ihnen in Minuten umkehren.

Vorwärts waren überzeugte Straßen von SF Beobachtern nach Bagdad vor der Invasion klar, sich selbst seit mehreren Wochen verbergend, feindliches Innenterritorium in speziell VERBIRGT Lager, die völlig unentdeckt durch irakische Kräfte gingen. Es ist eine ziemlich erstaunliche Geschichte, so hoffe ich, dass Sie eine Chance bekommen, diese Spezielle Operationsepisode Kampfplans zu beobachten, es wird Ihnen einen Anblick dessen geben, was unsere Armeespezialtruppen

BIG Healthcare Rebuttal

A portion of the following, posted on the blog “REDSTATE,” counters one of the arguments made against the health insurance industry. “Medicare Part E” also references a bill that Rep. …from what I can see, the health insurance industry doesn't really do insurance in the first place anymore. Rather than underwriting risk and spreading it across large pools, their primary activity is now all about managing health expenses. And a huge part of that activity is navigating around the dense thicket of federal, state and local regulations, not the least of which relate to Medicare's byzantine cost-control procedures. The private health-insurance industry creates economic value primarily by dealing with the inefficiencies created by the Government.

I’m not sure it will change how any of us describes one another or ourselves but it will clarify some of the notions we have about the terms we use. Mark Steyn is the most entertaining writer in the world. My favorite lines from his latest are about the candidates (and her spouse) in the democrat primary:

Hillary is what the Clintons look like with their pants up. Their much-vaunted political savvy turns out to be a big nothing: The supposed masters of "the politics of personal destruction" can't turn up anything better on Obama than some ancient essay from his Jakarta grade school, plus a few limp charges of plagiarism. And instead of getting the surrogates to crowbar the enemy every time Hillary opens up on him she looks mean and petty, and he gets to do his high-minded Obamessiah routine.

Bill gave the party an appetite for slick lounge acts, and this time round Barack's the guy delivering it in buckets of gaseous uplift.

They are also now operating outside their normal areas because they lack support from the local populations.''

Is Obama's Security Too Lax?

"DALLAS, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The Secret Service told Dallas police to stop screening for weapons while people were still arriving at a campaign rally for Barrack Obama, a report said."

Police halted weapons searches an hour before Obama's appearance because they wanted to speed up the seating. Dallas Police Chief Lawrence said he was concerned about the large number of people being let in without being screened, but that the crowd seemed "friendly."

If the need to seat the crowd takes priority over security, then I really would be concerned about what else is being sacrificed for the sake of expediency?

The “Big 4” gaming tribes footed much of the bill for a GOP slate mailer that went out ahead of the Feb. 5 election. While the gaming tribes have been more associated with working with Democrats and California’s “post-partisan” governor, some say cooperation with the GOP could be a sign of things to come.

The four tribes with compacts before voters in that election poured in $6.6 million to the California Republican Party in January. This includes five donations directly from the main group created to support the compacts, the Coalition to Protect California’s Budget, for a total of $5.9 million. The balance came from the tribes and committees around inidividual compacts.

THE Iranian opposition group that first exposed Iran's controversial nuclear fuel program has given the UN's nuclear watchdog details of what the group says is a working nuclear warhead factory, visited by North Koreans. ** The facility at Khojir, a Defence Ministry missile research site on the southeast edge of Tehran, is developing a nuclear warhead for use on Iranian medium-range missiles, according to Mohammad Mohaddessin, foreign affairs chief for the exiled National Council of Resistance of Iran. ** Mr Mohaddessin also said the NCRI had identified a guest house on a military compound near Khojir that housed North Korean specialists working at the warhead facility. He said the information had been finalised in recent weeks and was current. ** The opposition group is considered by the US and the European Union to be a terrorist organisation, but it has proved correct on several such claims before. ** Yesterday, Mr Mohaddessin passed the information, which includes satellite images, to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's Vienna-based nuclear watchdog, and asked the agency to investigate. ** An IAEA representative said the organisation would check the NCRI's claim against the agency's own data and pursue it "if appropriate".

Despite widespread taxpayer aversion to new taxes, there is one that most Californians don't seem to mind: the one that they don't have to pay. Supporters of a measure on the November ballot are seizing on the sentiment to push for a vast expansion of services for the mentally ill. Their plan is to let millionaires pay the bill. And, so far, judging by polls, it is proving to be quite effective. The proposal targets a small group of taxpayers for one of the largest state tax hikes in recent history.

There’s only one problem, if I heard Newt Gingrich correctly today on Sean Hannity’s program when he said that:

HALF OF CALIFORNIAS DEFICIT CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE FACT THAT MILLIONAIRS HAVE LEFT THE STATE DUE TO HIGH TAXES.

And that’s the problem with punishing taxation. People change behaviors. The best way to ensure money continues to flow into government coffers is by making policy that doesn’t overburden or restrict people. A punishing tax policy drives people away...and they take money and jobs with them.

It's about time they exercised more scrutiny over credit. We would not be in this subprime mess if they had been more careful. But you can't put the blame entirely on the lenders, or "greedy lenders," as the Democrats call them. No lender ever wanted to make a loan to a person unlikely to repay the loan. They were forced to by pressure groups representing minorities and by Democrats threatening to pass legislation. Remember a few years ago during the housing boom when the front page of every newspaper warned that the boom was leaving some people out? Some people who had bad credit, mostly minorities, were being discriminated against. The word most often used was "redlining," as in whole neighborhoods being discriminated against. Those neighborhoods were always the neighborhoods of minorities. So, in order to stave off punitive action by Congress, mainly by Democrats in Congress, the lenders caved in and made loans to people outside of the standard credit parameters. It was not really a racial issue. The lenders never cared about skin color. All they cared about was whether the loan would be repaid, and it just so happened that people who had bad credit histories were often members of minority groups.

It’s important to notice small yet significant victories in our efforts because they aren’t always obvious, they aren’t always trumpeted and when they do make news, they are often presented in a negative light. Such has been the case with the recent elections in Pakistan. It's been said that the election marked a solid defeat of the Bush Doctrine because Musharif failed in his bid for re-election. A closer look tells a different story.

The latest analysis of the results shows that the parties linked, or at least sympathetic, to the Taliban and al Qaeda saw their share of the votes slashed to about 3% from almost 11% in the last general election a few years ago. The largest coalition of the Islamist parties, the United Assembly for Action (MMA), lost control of the Northwest Frontier Province -- the only one of Pakistan's four provinces it governed. The winner in the province is the avowedly secularist National Awami Party. ** Despite vast sums of money spent by the Islamic Republic in Tehran and wealthy Arabs from the Persian Gulf states, the MMA failed to achieve the "approaching victory" (fatah al-qarib) that Islamist candidates, both Shiite and Sunni, had boasted was coming. ** The Islamist defeat in Pakistani confirms a trend that's been under way for years. Conventional wisdom had it that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the lack of progress in the Israel-Palestine conflict, would provide radical Islamists with a springboard from which to seize power through elections. ** Analysts in the West used that prospect to argue against the Bush Doctrine of spreading democracy in the Middle East. These analysts argued that Muslims were not ready for democracy, and that elections would only translate into victory for hard-line Islamists. ** The facts tell a different story.

Stocks Sink on Inflation News

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks plunged sharply Wednesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average losing more than 100 points, after consumer prices climbed more than analysts had expected, heightening worries that rising inflation could restrict future interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.

Democrats just can’t keep their eager beaver noses out of business that isn’t theirs.

A few weeks into her position as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi took it upon herself to travel to the Middle East to meet with leaders there, putting into question her understanding of her role as Speaker. Now both Senators Clinton and Obama have overstepped their current roles as candidates in waiting to vie for the position of president…I question whether either has respect for our government at all.

Mississippi House Bill 282 – Comment by Walter Williams

“An Act to prohibit certain food establishments from serving food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the State Department of Health; to direct the Department to prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese and to provide those materials to the food establishments; to direct the Department to monitor the food establishments for compliance with the provisions of this act.”

The bill proposes to revoke licenses of food establishments that violate the provisions of the act. You shouldn’t believe that if this measure is successful in Mississippi that it will stay in Mississippi. Moreover, it will be expanded upon because most people who are obese don’t become so by eating at restaurants; mostly, it’s food eaten at home. Thus, the food tyrants won’t be satisfied with restaurant restrictions, just as the anti-tobacco zealots weren’t satisfied with warning labels on cigarettes. They will push for legislation restricting the sale of foods at supermarkets. Since an obese person can get a svelte person to do his grocery shopping for him, legislators might propose sting operations to fine or arrest people giving an obese person high-calorie food... Americans turning away from rule of law and constitutional government are following in the footsteps of other people around the world who discovered their liberties gone and recovering them was next to impossible. How could anyone in their right mind think this was NOT inappropriate?

Since the flag fiasco began Isabel's phone has been ringing off the hook and they had to place a cop outside her apartment door just to keep the peace. This was a bad thing to do anywhere in the USA (except Berkeley), but especially you don't fly a commie flag in Texas! People have been shot for less, ask Judge Roy Bean!

Obama's staff has tried to down play this outrage and merely said the flag did not reflect his views. That's about it, not much of a response was it?

I think the person who hung up the Cuban flag should be dismissed from the campaign and I don't understand how Obama could not agree? Where's his anger, but then again maybe he isn't bothered by flying a communist flag in his office? The picture shown here (above right) is the flag in question and there is a senior staffer working along as if it were no big deal.

Man, if I walked into my office and saw something like that there was be #$% to pay and that flag would be in shreds. It's scary to think these people walk among us and they vote! What is happening to our country???

Last week Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi chose to let the terror surveillance law (FISA) lapse by refusing to even bring it to the floor for a vote. Today in an article by Robert Novak the motivation behind her decision is suggested:

A Townhall.com article by Amanda Carpenter, “FISA Law Expires At Midnight,” tells of the scope and breadth of suits filed against cooperating telecommunications companies:

Since the New York Times broke a story in late 2005 that found the Bush administration had engaged in covert surveillance activities with cooperation from phone companies like Verizon, AT&T, and BellSouth, a debate has erupted, largely on party lines, over whether or not to protect those companies from prosecution under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Disputes over the phone companies’ decision to cooperate with government requests has resulted more than 40 multi-billion dollar lawsuits.

I'm sure we can can count on Al Gore to let us know when hell freezes over, meanwhile, I’m patiently waiting for the “drive-by-media” to begin the smear campaign against these democrats…this futile endeavor will, however, be trumped by overwhelming concerns about future terror attacks against America and increases in my telephone bills.

While speaking at a rally in Ohio for Hillary Bill Clinton barked back at a pro-life protester. Setting aside the former president’s obvious frustration, there’s a lot to be learned from what he had to say. He reveals in his biting rant the crazed impression that his side has of the pro-life opinion:

“I gave you the answer. We disagree with you," Clinton said. "You wanna criminalize women and their doctors and we disagree... I reduced abortion… Tell the truth, tell the truth… If you were really pro-life, if you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and every mother as an accessory to murder in prison. And you won’t say you wanna do that because you know that because you know that you wouldn't have a lick of political support….

Bill Clinton’s ominous sounding version of the pro-life position is filled with dark imagery of harsh punishment and cold dank jail cells. I’m not sure how he came by this idea but it certainly explains why we can’t communicate on the subject. Personally, I’ve never heard anyone advocate the idea of making criminals of mothers and doctors or of putting them in jail. I have heard them talk about saving the lives of innocent unborn children. I’ve heard pro–lifers talk about the physical scars and emotional pain and suffering that women who choose to have an abortion often endure. The subject of social justice and the rights of the unborn also come up in pro-life discussions as does the notion that we should place a higher value on human life. And finally, I’ve heard pro-life advocates speak of reversing Roe v. Wade, which would not make abortion illegal as many think, but simply cause the issue to revert back to individual states. These are points we should find worthy of debate. I think the discussion would move forward more amicably if prejudices and attitudes like those Bill Clinton displayed in Ohio were not so much a part of the discussion.

Vancouver–The mystery began when one severed foot washed ashore last summer. The second foot was found a week later, on a busy beach trail. Now, what began as a strange coincidence has taken on downright baffling dimensions with the discovery earlier this month of a third male foot. All three feet washed up on a Gulf Island between B.C.'s mainland and Vancouver Island. The connection between the feet doesn't end there. They were all right feet, size 12, and all three were shod in sneakers.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both propose to "turn the economy around" in a novel way - by raising tax rates on small businesses, working couples and stockholders in general, including retirees. Of course, their plans are also meant to raise revenue for their various hundreds of billions in new spending - but the move would fall flat on that front, too. ** All in all, these tax hikes add up to, at most, $47 billion a year - only 1.5 percent of federal spending and 0.3 percent of GDP. And even that assumes nobody makes the slightest effort to avoid the increased taxes. ** In reality, many two-earner families would become one-earner families; doctors would play more golf; some folks would quit working long hours and others would retire early. Top-bracket taxpayers would maximize deductions (take out a bigger mortgage, put more in the 401k) and minimize taxable income (buy municipal bonds or just spend rather than invest). Such tax avoidance alone would cut the estimated revenue in half. How intelligence is used to betray Americans

When hatred of our president, or partisan politics in general, threatens the safety of America, and indeed the entire world, shouldn’t we begin to ask questions? Shouldn’t concerns for our own safety and survival cause alarms to go off in both red and blue states? It should, but I doubt if the boys and girls in blue would even notice. Does this willingness to be deceived spring from arrogance or pride? Is it naivete about the threats we face, or ignorance of the stated intentions of our enemies? Is it born of fantasy, a fervent childish desire to live in a sweet and perfect world? The phenomenon of the Barack Obama campaign of “change and hope” would suggest the latter for a good number of Americans. But in these dangerous times, electing a president solely from a position of hope or from a weary need for change could spell disaster. Our intelligence community and our media have participated in a politics of deception that has helped to foster this "change" euphoria. Now more than ever we need to look beyond the main stream news for a clear picture of the challenges before us.

Last December, at a crucial time in our diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, the Director of National Intelligence went before the Senate Intelligence Committee and delivered the NIE report. Included in the report was information suggesting that in 2003 Iran had discontinued it’s nuclear weapons program:

Breast Cancer - Things You Need to Know

A few days ago I announced that I would no longer be seeking election to State office because a close family member had been diagnosed with breast cancer and I needed to focus my energy now on my family.

I was in the running as a public service, but now I want to reveal what is happening to us for the same reason. I have been asked not to mention the family member's name who has the cancer because she is a very private person and she just doesn't want any undue attention drawn to her. But, she knows her story could be valuable lesson for many others out here, especially if her experience prompts more women to get a breast exam, because the odds are that one in every nine women will develop breast cancer.

The best way to fight this disease is to arm yourself with as much information as you can!

Returning Soldier's Stories

I need to say it. I'm extremely offended by certain members of the American media who seem to go out of their way to insult and demean our returning soldiers. We see examples of this negative reporting nearly every day. The seriousness of the problem was highlighted by veteran Steve Russell in the Weekly Standard:

IN THE LAST several weeks I have learned a great deal about myself, thanks to all the wonderful media reports about serving and returning war veterans. For example, I have learned that I might want to kill my wife because of the trauma of war. Or, if I have no beef with my family, that I might go after my neighbors instead. Or if there are no other handy targets for my aggression, I might go after myself. - Steve Russell, WeeklyStandard.

There is no excuse for blanket insinuations against our service men and women. Reports of occassional incidents should be made like any other. The entire real estate profession wouldn't be smeared if a handfull of realtors were found to be guilty of theft in the neighborhood, why should the entire military be demeaned because of the actions of a few? Very little is reported about the achievements and successes of our returning veterans. Highlighting these would at least offer some perspective. This is a serious offense made by those who have the power to shape opinion and imprint on our society.

The following offers a bit of balance:

KEENE – She hadn't expected him home until April, but last night, Elizabeth Penn cried tears of joy as she embraced her father, David Penn, a New Hampshire Army National Guard soldier home from Iraq on a two-week leave. A freshman at Keene State College, Elizabeth had just walked into a semi-formal dance at Holloway Hall when the song "Hero" by Mariah Carey started to play. ** That's when Elizabeth saw her father, dressed in fatigues, carrying a bouquet of flowers and a stuffed animal. - Kristen Senz, Union Leader, Manchester,NH

This simple little hometown story more accurately reflects the average experiences of our returning soldiers. They come home to family and friends...they have hopes and dreams of a bright future. They have acquired the discipline necessary for achievement and they are, no doubt, more aware of the preciousness of life than any of us can ever imagine. They deserve to be honored not to be scorned.

David Penn brought "flowers and a stuffed animal" for his sweet young daughter...this snapshot of a soldiers return is nothing like the more sinister images that other stories are purposely meant to invoke.

Yes, I resent the way our soldiers are portrayed...and I resent that they must endure this insult.

When some claim that President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following:

a. FDR led us into World War II.

b. Germany never attacked us ; Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost . An average of 112,500 per year.

c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost . An average of 18,334 per year.

Obama - Hope For A Change!

Media: Mr. Obama we are facing many great challenges, if you were elected president, how would you handle the threat of terrorism here and abroad by Islamic extremists?

Obama: This is where we need a change in course, a new direction and a new beginning to move forward into the future. And as your president I will bring about that change and... restore hope!

Media; Well, what about the housing crisis, what would you do to minimize the damage from that?

Obama: Too many people have been victimized by the housing crisis. Let's get real, million of Americans have been victimized! Because of that victimizing, we are a nation that has lost hope. Hope has been taken away from the people and I want to give it back. Hope and change that is our message and people are hearing our message and they want hope and they want change! We make changes by addressing the needs of the victims, not the needs of those who are not victims.

Media; And that brings us to the health care crisis. So many American's can't afford decent health care and the costs of health care insurance is rising so fast, what could you as president do to bring about a fair health care system for everyone?

Obama; I'm really glad you asked me that one because this is one of my favorite subjects. It's time to bring the people into it. They have been denied too long. You bring the people back into it and that's how we solve the health care crisis! Together we can solve anything. Let me tell you what you will have when you bring the people back into it, you have hope and you will have change and that is what America needs most, hope and change. We're moving forward into the future and we're bringing the people back into it!

Media: Senator McCain has recently said that you really don't have a plan to fix anything, that it is all just a bunch of rhetoric, how do you respond to that?

Obama: That is because Senator McCain represents the party of no hope and no change! He says we have no hope and I know different, we do have hope. I know because I represent hope... and change and Senator McCain doesn't. No hope McCain, that’s what we call him; you want a man like that in the White House, I don't think so!

Media: How do you plan to deal with Iran and the spread of nuclear weapons that threaten the Middle East?

Obama: Well, you don't make any progress by not talking to the Iranians. We must to talk to them and I would talk to them. I want to talk to them! This is how you get change and this is our hope - hope for change that is my policy. We should talk and we should hope and we should bring the people into it! The people have been denied for too long and we need a change...for hope for you and for me and for all of us and for a better tomorrow! Hope and change, we are the campaign for hope! It's time for a change as we move forward to the future!

Media; Recently the use of torture has been called into question. What's your feeling on the use of torture to extract information to protect us from terrorists attacks?

When you treat people fairly, according to the Geneva Convention or when you afford them access to our judicial system for a fair trial this is how you gain cooperation. In that sense you give hope to our enemies and if hope is good enough for us, well, there it is then isn't it?

Media: Well Senator, you certainly have all the right answers. To be candid, I have to admit you are brilliant...BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT and who could argue otherwise? Best of luck to you! Hillary Clinton Delivers Fascistic Economic Pitch

Speaking to General Motors employees in Warren, Ohio today Hillary Clinton made this statement:

“Today, I’m announcing an agenda to reign in the special interests and save the American people at least $55 billion a year.”

It’s fascinating to me that, while speaking to a big special interest group, Hillary vowed to reign in special interest groups. On the other hand, it’s become increasingly clear that in her divisive world of “have’s” and “have not’s,” some special interest groups are more equal than others. She is making a vow to this “special” special interest group, to stick it to the very company that provides these employees a job, workers compensation insurance, free collection of federal and state taxes from payroll, training, wages and various benefits, including health insurance. At the same time she claims that sticking it to corporations will save the American people $55 billion a year. That’s quite a promise, even for her. I suppose in an effort to show her humanity she went on to describe how she measures her life:

“not by applause or headlines — but by whether I’m helping people.”

Frankly, I’d feel better if she measured her life, at least in terms of the presidency, by how well she serves the American people…all of them! Her job, if elected president, would not, or should not, include managing and controlling the affairs and daily business decisions of companies like General Motors. Yet that is exactly how she sees the job of the presidency.

The 3rd House Is on Wall Street

One of the great balancers for good government is not found in the Constitution, nor is it even a federal branch. It is Wall Street. No President in our nation's history has ever strayed too far in the pursuit of his grandiose plans without severe consequences from the stock market. This powerful entity may have been an unexpected check and balance to our government, but a check and balance it certainly is and one of the greatest and most immediate in magnitude. Case in point, the mere threat hint of Hillary Healthcare plan sent stocks tumbling 300 points recently. According to some pundents, if the Democrats gain control of the Presidency we are facing a potential 2 trillion dollar addition to the federal deficit. If you think Hillary-Care upset the DOW, just wait till the whole plan is dumped on us.

The President sets the agenda, Congress passes the laws and Wall Street tell them both if it was worth doing! It's a great system when things are working in harmony!

A Great Reply To "Obama's Bill"

I found this article informative, and I am entirely against taxing the people to pay for the "Millennium Development Goals". However, I was unable to find in the text of the resolution where it suggested how the money needed should be acquired, but the author of the AIM article makes the intuitive leap that it must come from we who are already taxed to the gunwales.

One thing is troubling; the article states,"In addition to seeking to eradicate poverty, that declaration commits nations to banning "small arms and light weapons". However, the text of the resolution reads,To take concerted action to end illicit traffic in small arms and light weapons, especially by making arms transfers more transparent and supporting regional disarmament measures, taking account of all the recommendations of the forthcoming United Nations Conference on Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons.

I think the connotation between the word banning and "to end illicit traffic in" is distinctly different. I will agree though that "supporting regional disarmament measures" is a quite ominous statement and reeks of NWO doublespeak. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

A warning bell has sounded…is anyone listening?

Senator Obama has run his campaign so far as a charismatic patriarchal guide; someone to lead us through troubled waters. His words, filled with warmth and hope, paint a peaceful picture of the serene place he will take us. He cannot keep this up forever.

His true ambitions and goals, found here and here, have now begun to emerge on the political stage. Perhaps because of Obama's recent victories, The "Global Poverty Act," (S.2433) sponsered by Obama, is suddenly being rushed through committee in the Senate. This bill, according to Accuracy In Media, “would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid, which amounts to a phenomenal 13-year total of $845 billion over and above what the U.S. already spends.” I urge you to read the full AIM article. The legislation itself requires the President "to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to further the United States foreign policy objective of promoting the reduction of global poverty, the elimination of extreme global poverty, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of reducing by one-half the proportion of people worldwide, between 1990 and 2015, who live on less than $1 per day."

"Dear Friends,

It is with deep regret that I am announcing my withdrawal from the 3rd Assembly District race.

A close family member has just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and when a crisis like this happens, we're forced to re-evaluate all our priorities. That is why it is my decision (and my family concurs) that I should leave this race and devote my time and energy to fight for the life of our loved one.

In reality this campaign was never about me, it was about our ideas. In that context our campaign is not over. We still want to see elections run honestly, strictly on the issues, where good character and inspiration matter most and winning by any means matters naught.

Over the last month or so race became an issue of concern in the Democrat presidential primary. The flap began over seperate comments made by Bill and Hillary Clinton that were pointed enough to cause concerns about racial slurs in some black circles.

Donna Brazile, a leading black Democrat strategist and former Clinton insider, said that many African-Americans had found his comments condescending. "For him to go after Obama using 'fairy tale', calling him a kid, is an insult," she said. "As an African-American, I find his words and his tone very depressing." *** Mr Clinton's damage-limitation exercise came after his wife also provoked controversy by appearing to diminish the achievements of Martin Luther King. She said it took President Lyndon B Johnson to implement the reforms that the assassinated civil rights leader had championed. Aides to Mrs Clinton acknowledged she had "mis-spoken" in her effort to make clear that change required action not just words - the basis for her frequent attacks on Mr Obama's campaign rhetoric of hope and optimism. *** Mrs Clinton recently parted company with campaign aides who circulated emails inaccurately describing her rival as a Muslim, or suggesting that he would be targeted by Republicans for alleged drug-dealing because he admits taking cocaine as a teenager.

Yesterday a prominent democrat attempted to pass the racist image off to conservatives:

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Ed Rendell, one of Hillary Rodham Clinton's most visible supporters, said some white Pennsylvanians are likely to vote against her rival Barack Obama because he is black. ** "You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," Rendell told the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in remarks that appeared in Tuesday's paper. ** Later Tuesday, Rendell's spokesman said the governor did not mean to offend anyone. "He was simply making an observation about the unfortunate nature of some parts of American society," said spokesman Chuck Ardo. "He wasn't being critical, he wasn't making accusations, but just being realistic."

He wasn’t being critical…no, of course not! Democrats are too inclusive and kind; they wouldn’t dreeeeam of being critical. These comments are just "realistic" (everyone knows conservatives are racists), and they are acceptable (everyone does it) and reasonable (everyone does it) to deflect attention away from our own prejudices and racist comments by smearing, damaging or ruining the reputations of our rivals.

I'd just like to say I deeply resent the implication that conservatives are racist and that they would make choices for president, or anything else, based on race. His ridiculous assertion contains at least two implied lies: 1. Conservatism is the "home" of racisism in America 2. The Democrat Party doesn't have racist members.

Please vote wisely in November.


We Can All Be Miserable Together

VOTERS BEWARE!!!

When a politician runs on anything except justice. BEWARE!!

When a politician says he/she wants to help the "little guy" what he means is, he will steal form the big guy regardless of whether or not he is just.

What he/she is actually saying is that he/she will stick up for you...as long as you are the little guy.

As long as you stay poor and dependent, they will "fight" for you.

Fight for you to what end? Presumably they are fighting for you to not be poor and dependent...but if that is true, than as soon as you are no longer poor and dependent, they are forced to punish you in order to help those who are still poor and dependent.

This is not an extreme, it is the logical outworking of any politician that claims to be on the side of a subjective circumstance, rather than justice and truth.

I don't want you to be "for the poor", I want you to protect a free market that allows the capable to flourish.

I don't want you to be for a race, I want you to be for a system that holds character and ability paramount to arbitrary conditions.

I don't want you to "stick up" for the little guy, I want you to defend the just guy!

Until we destroy on the intellectual battlefield the politics of platitudes and class warfare, we will slowly move closer and closer to socialism.

Then we can all be miserable together.

Our family has been dealt quite a setback yesterday when we were notified that a recent biopsy proved positive for ductal carcinoma (cancer). I have been requested not to go into anymore details and to keep the family member's name out of it even although many of you close to us already know who it is. We just don't want it in the papers, there's enough stress here already. As a result of this sudden and completely unexpected turn of events, I'm currently weighing my future election plans, along with many other future plans. What happens next regarding the election is going to be a family decision that I will announce within the next 24 hours.

Lerach, one of the nation's most successful attorneys, was sentenced to two years in prison today for his part in a lucrative kickback scheme involving class-action lawsuits targeting dozens of the nation's biggest corporations. ** U.S. District Judge John Walter also sentenced the 61-year-old San Diego resident to two years' probation, fined him $250,000 and ordered him to complete 1,000 hours of community service. ** Authorities said the New York law firm where Lerach practiced for 28 years…made an estimated $250 million in fees over two decades by filing class actions on behalf of ready-made plaintiffs who received kickbacks. ** Government lawyers allege that the firm paid $11.3 million in kickbacks to shareholders and consumers who became plaintiffs in lawsuits targeting companies such as AT&T, Microsoft, WorldCom and Lucent, prosecutors allege.

Hurting Patients With Good Intentions

A Chico Nursing facility was caring for a severely brain damaged patient who often threw herself out of bed. During one episode she tossed herself out of bed and started flailing on the floor. The charge nurse ordered soft restraints be placed on the patient until the she quieted down. The supervising nurse intervened and said, "You could lose your license for that and we could be sued! You take those restraints off immediately and put the patient back in bed."

Elder care homes and other nursing facilities are required by law to provide the highest possible standard of care to maintain the mental and physical well being of the patients. Under 42 C.F.R. Part 483 an omnibus patients bill of rights passed in 1987, this comprehensive law resulted in the system going from a large number of patient abuses wherein chemical (drugs) and physical restraints were used to keep the person quiet and confined to almost no restrains even when necessary. This law made it highly risky for the nurses or owners of nursing homes to use restraints for fear of running into legal trouble. Now patients are being hurt by the good intentions of a law designed to protect people from abuse.

Morgan Freeman once said that the only way to get beyond racial divisions is to “stop talking about it.”

What an excellent idea! Too bad we haven’t followed this simple, logical and reasonable model, both personally and in government. Instead, since the civil rights laws passed in the sixties, we have taken the “more is better" route and done just the opposite. Everything is about race…as well as every other divisive construct we can think of. The underlying basis of course is money. Who deserves it and who has it but doesn’t… and how it will be divided up in order to be fair...control being vested in government.

The latest example of this in California is AB 624 introduced by Joe Cotto, a democrat representative of the 23rd district and current Chair of the Latino Legislative Causus. The bill would regulate private foundations and charitable organizations by requiring those with "assets of more than $250 million to track and disclose the race, gender and sexual orientation of their trustees, staff, and even grantees."

The Code Pink banner read, No Military Predators in Our Town!

A few dozen un-Americans, mostly women in pink, camped near the Marine Recruiters and sang old hippy peace songs, but they were shouted down and jeered at by a much larger crowd of Americans who supported the Marines. The Code Pink fiasco in Berkeley and the harsh statements by the Mayor now has the City Council backing down and the Mayor publically apologizing to Marine Corp. A rally for the Marines was set for Tuesday and I have a call in to the organizers to see if it will continue.

What sparked the sudden about face? $2.3 million in pork spending was destined for Berkeley, but that pork was threatened to be stopped by 6 Republican Senators who were going to draft legislation to stop federal funds from reaching this liberal city. Of course rabid left-wingers like Congresswoman Barbara Lee-D and Senator Barbara Boxer-D vowed to fight such a bill. To them pork is their life's blood and to not be able to squander tax money on frivolous and irresponsible giveaways would be too shocking to even imagine! (Uh, how come they are still in office anyway?)

I say pull the pork spending anyway, it was wrong and the Mayor's weak apology won't make it right! In fact we should pull all pork spending. If the Republican's want to work their way back into favor with the average voter they better get tough and stand up for things conservatives believe in for a change! Maybe Wally Herger-R Congressman from Chico could draft a bill ASAP to put a halt to ALL PORK spending? What do you say Wally, can you handle that one for us?

If the rabid left were truly facing such ruthless killers that exterminate the opposition for fun and profit, then why are they (protestors) still breathing?

But, this rable are not standing up to maniacal killers; they are standing up against ordinary people that represent the true values of middle America. They are taking aim at the very people that have been allowing them to abuse their 1st Amendment right. They are deriding the every day working people who understand the role of our men and women serving in the military and the persistent realities of running the republic.

Americans obviously do not always agree with the administration that may occupy the White House and we voice strong opinions, but the majority respect the President enough and have wisdom enough to know where the line of dissent ends and treason begins. The other side made up of leftwing kooks do not have any concept or concern about what might be treasonous and despicable; their selfish personal agenda takes precedence over all other concerns, including the safety of others.

The rabid left that brands our soldiers as killers and terrorists as heroes frequently turn into angry mobs to do their worst and seldom are they taken into custody or challenged by the law abiding to stop. The media loves to promote them on TV spouting their hate rhetoric and carrying protest signs like, "Shoot Your Officers!", "Kill Cheney", "Death to Bush" etc.. These wacko's have no fear of burning our flag and no fear of hurling rocks and bottles at the police trying to restrain them. They do heinous things all too regularly to the frustration and disdain of the average citizen and soldier that they malign and now here's the kicker. . . they do it all in the name of peace!

At the same time, the council granted Code Pink a parking space and a sound permit to make it easier for the peace group to conduct protests outside the center. ** "We're starting to get people coming in from all over the U.S.," said Catherine Moy, executive director of Move America Forward, one of several pro-military groups planning an all-day protest Tuesday at Maudelle Shirek City Hall. "People are pretty upset. We want to avoid clashes, but it could be really, really big. We don't really know what's going to happen." ** Peace groups, disgusted that the council would cave in to pressure from the pro-military groups, plan to host their own rally, an "emergency 24-hour peace-in vigil," complete with singing, drums and dialogue. ** "We want to protect our city from the onslaught of the right wing," said Code Pink spokeswoman Zanne Joi. "We're facing people who are willing to kill or send other people's children to kill to get what they want. We understand the reality of that, and we're prepared to face that in a nonviolent way." ** City officials were deluged with hundreds of irate e-mails, some containing death threats. Moy said her group got so many e-mails its Web site crashed. ** Both sides will be protesting at Tuesday's meeting. Code Pink and its allies plan to camp out on the lawn at City Hall beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, while Move America Forward, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and other pro-military groups plan to rally at Martin Luther King Jr. Park across the street starting at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Seven medical myths that are all false: 1. You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day. This advice, often found in the popular press, probably originated from advice given in 1945 stating that a suitable allowance of water per day for adults is 2.5 liters (which is 10.14 cups). The statement also added that most of this quantity is found in food--but that part seems to have been forgotten. Thus, it's interpreted as eight glasses of water a day. Remember, drinking too much water can actually be harmful, resulting in water intoxication, hyponatraemia and even death.

2. We use only 10 percent of our brains. Erroneously credited to Albert Einstein, this myth is cited by everyone from physicians to comedians. But they're wrong! MRI and PET scans show that there are no dormant, inactive areas of the brain. Detailed probing of the brain has never revealed the non-functioning 90 percent.


Lessons in Fascistic Intrigue

Last week I had a discussion with a poster to our blog about fascism. Quentin’s somewhat veiled assertion, if I read him right, was that both republicans and democrats favor fascist policies; that we can’t tell one from the other. Although I admit both parties have participated in the move toward greater government intrusion into private affairs, I greatly disagree that both parties have been motivated by a desire for greater government control. Today I came across two Wall Street Journal articles that illustrate the purpose and intent of prominent democrat leaders. I thought I would share them and challenge any person, particularly those of a more leftward persuasion, to offer similar evidence against republican representatives in our current government.

This challenge may go unmet, but I assure you that, even without a comparative, the information submitted here makes for compelling reading and is well worth your perusal. Let’s begin by revisiting the definition of fascism:

FASCISM - any program for setting up a centralized autocratic national regime with severely nationalistic policies, exercising regimentation of industry, commerce, and finance, rigid censorship, and forcible suppression of opposition b : any tendency toward or actual exercise of severe autocratic or dictatorial control.

Our first story involves a sitting senator of some significance. Henry Waxman has represented California’s 30th congressional District since 1975 and is now chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Prior to his entry into politics at the federal level, he served in the California State Assembly. The following excerpts in the Wall Street Journal article, “The Waxman Method,” followed the line of our discussion and the definition of fascism in the sense of a “tendency toward dictatorial control” and “exercising forcible suppression of opposition.” These are immediately apparent in Waxman’s action and method:

Newt Gingrich has always been one of my favorite politicians. Not only does he has a brilliant grasp of history and its significance for today's conservative, but I can't think of any other person in our time that has tendered more outstanding ideas for reform to improve and strengthen our democracy. Because of my admiration for this conservative patriot, I took it quite seriously when he said Friday that conservatives had done themselves no favors by going along with President Bush when he was wrong. Bush needed to be restrained and it was our duty to be critical when necessary. Well, I have a clear conscience on this one, because I've been fairly critical of Mr. Bush, but I absolutely agree 100% with Newt that we were too supportive or acquiescent when we should have been critical.

Bottle Water - Is it Safe?

water.jpgAre you inadvertantly poisoning yourself? A lot of people like to carry bottled water around in cars just for the convenience, but it's probably not a good idea. Research has shown that often times plastic water bottles left in cars get hot. The heat causes chemicals to leach from the plastic into your drinking water! Polyethylene terephthalate is found in most grade 1 plastics and the grade 1 plastic is used in making most bottles destined for drinking water.

If you reuse these water bottles washing scratches the surfaces and in some cases the bottles are bent and wrinkle and this allows further degrading of the plastic and the release of a trace metal called antimony.

"We have to assume that along with that metal, others are almost certainly leaching out as well, but we don’t know what they are and we don’t know what to look for because manufacturers won’t tell us what else is in the bottles,” Biology Professor vom Saal of the University of Missouri said.

Lynn R. Goldman, professor of environmental health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said the truth was that it leached in barely discernible amounts. Perhaps more worrisome is that because the bottles — with their small openings — are harder to wash out than the wide-mouth hiking and sports bottles, they can house bacteria.


New Clue in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Is there a link between Paraben, a substance found in many cosmetics and breast cancer? Researchers think there is, however the results are not conclusive. What they do know is paraben is found in unhealthy breast tissue and cancerous tumors in the breast in an alarming percentage of biopsies.

"Parabens (alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid) are widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in thousands of cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceutical products, and food. There are six commonly used forms (Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, p-Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, n-Butylparaben and Benzylparaben) and it is estimated that they are used in at least 13,200 cosmetics products.

According to the lead researcher of the recent study, Philippa Darbre, an oncology expert at the university of Reading, in Edinburgh, the chemical form of the parabens found in 18 of the 20 tumors tested indicated that they originated from something applied to the skin, the most likely candidates being deodorants, antiperspirants, creams, or body sprays."

The data tracked solar activity and temperature cycles and guess what? Global temperatures track right along with the cycles of the sun…just like somebody planned it that way! It’s made Canadian scientists curious enough to seek funding for solar research. Be prepared for a chilling effect on science by consensus…read the full article, “The Sun Also Sets,” from Investors Business Daily for full details. Here’s a little tease:

Kenneth Tapping, a solar researcher and project director for Canada's National Research Council, is among those looking at the sun for evidence of an increase in sunspot activity. Solar activity fluctuates in an 11-year cycle. But so far in this cycle, the sun has been disturbingly quiet. The lack of increased activity could signal the beginning of what is known as a Maunder Minimum, an event which occurs every couple of centuries and can last as long as a century. ** Such an event occurred in the 17th century. The observation of sunspots showed extraordinarily low levels of magnetism on the sun, with little or no 11-year cycle. This solar hibernation corresponded with a period of bitter cold that began around 1650 and lasted, with intermittent spikes of warming, until 1715. Frigid winters and cold summers during that period led to massive crop failures, famine and death in Northern Europe. ** Tapping reports no change in the sun's magnetic field so far this cycle and warns that if the sun remains quiet for another year or two, it may indicate a repeat of that period of drastic cooling of the Earth, bringing massive snowfall and severe weather to the Northern Hemisphere.

Mitt Romney Drops Out

Shortly after his California defeat Romney announced he was still in the race, however disillusionment and disappointment took its toll and he sudenly dropped out to the chagrin of millions of his supporters.

Now I can't help but wonder If Romney was a Presbyterian or a Baptist would he have been our front runner now? We'll never know, but it would be a shame if that was it.

It sure seemed to me as if his religion was the man's main detraction. It's no secret that many Christians, and not just the fundamentalists, feel that the Mormon religion is a cult and the founder, Joseph Smith was anything but a Prophet. That's a lot of baggage for a Presidential candidate to carry in a party where the traditional Christian religion is important to the overwhelming majority.

In private I was not above this prejudice, but it wasn't enough to discount Romney completely and I never expressed these concerns until now. So, just know I'm feeling a little squimish as I write this!

The very vocal Mormon critics have brought a lot of unwanted attention to Romney's faith while making fun of some of the Mormon's more eccentric or quirky beliefs, but what religion doesn't have some odd notions? I know, yours!

As people publically point the finger at Mormon's there are always three more fingers privately pointing back at them, For those people I remind them, religion is faith based and faith is not determined by some universal standard of what one may consider too absurd or too preposterous. Religion is based more on feelings of the heart and not courtroom style evidence. Besides that point consider that not every single Mormon believes every single tenet of their religion. Just as non-Mormons often take issue with any number of minor points within their faith or even some assertions in the Bible. So I hope we were not too harsh on Romney, it could not have been easy for him to take the criticism and insults against his faith.

Whatever the reasons for his departure from the race, it was unfair to rail on Romney ONLY over his religion and refuse to vote for him ONLY because he was a Mormon.

Religion aside, his judgement in life has been outstanding. He is an excellent businessman and had turned around many failing companies before going into politics. He was a strong leader with a god head for business. That might have been just the kind of abilities we needed as this nation drifts closer to brink of an economic cliff.

Mike Huckabee is now squared off against McCain. Does he have a chance? Let me ask that another way, does a humble man of character and wisdom without much money have a chance against big money and the big political machine? Hmmmm...let's all take 1.5 seconds to figure it out.

McCain is the winner.

Like him or not, your next choice is Hillary, followed by Obama. Now tell me you won't support McCain?

KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) - Ten days after losing a federal lawsuit against this St. Louis suburb he insisted harassed him, a gunman stormed a council meeting, yelled ``Shoot the mayor!'' and opened fire, killing two police officers and three city officials, authorities and witnesses said.

The gunman, identified as Charles Lee ``Cookie'' Thornton, critically injured the city's mayor and wounded a reporter Thursday night before law enforcers fatally shot him.

``The only way that I can put into context that you might understand is that my brother went to war tonight with the people, the government that was putting torment and strife into his life,'' Thornton's brother, Gerald Thornton, told KMOV-TV of St. Louis.

As many of you know, I am the mother of the 1st Navy Seal who was killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I've dedicated my life to giving voice to my fallen hero, Marc Alan Lee, and all those who have served, or are currently serving, in the United States military - so that we may remain a safe and free nation.

You can't begin to imagine how horrified and angered I was when I learned that the Berkeley City Council had passed three measures that attacked our troops, and called our military men and women, "uninvited" and "unwelcome intruders" in their own country.blue>

For the past few years I had to hear from anti-war liberals about how terrible it was for our troops to be in Iraq or Afghanistan. Now the anti-military radicals have convinced an American government body to say that our troops don't belong here in America.

So I was more than committed to take action to fight back, but even I wasn't prepared for what would happen next when I watched Code Pink anti-war protestors defacing the U.S. Marine Recruiting Center in Berkeley, then barricading the entry and harassing those who attempted to enter. What shocked and saddened me most was to see the Berkeley Police Department officers stand there and do nothing. They said they were "trying to remain neutral."

We cannot stand for this insanity any longer, my friends.

2.3 Trillion Dollars Missing - Anybody Care?

Before you read this alarming story I suggest you sit down, have a glass of water and a sedative handy. You're going to need it!

bush_head2.jpgThis may be the most shocking story I've ever read about government waste and somehow it's been swept under the carpet by the media that carried this story starting in 2001. Now it's a story that has been all but forgotten, so let us refresh your memory.

If you are ready...here is quite possibly the greatest economic scandal of the century:

It appears the Bush, Clinton, Bush Administrations (et al) may have lost track of about 25% of the military budget over an extended period and quite possibly over 2.3 trillion dollars in unaccountable defense expenditures. That is trillion with a (T) not billion.

This story began the day before 9/11 when then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld delivered a stunning revelation that several trillion dollars in defense spending simply could not be accounted for and he was going to start a major investigation. Donald Rumsfeld said, The money wasted by the military poses a serious threat. "In fact, it could be said it's a matter of life and death," Rumsfeld blamed the loss on the Clinton administration, however this loss is far too big to be the fault of one administration, it must be many administrations and it is problem that still exists and that is the scary part!

President%20Clinton%20L.jpgThe next day this "almost historic" investigation was halted and greatly overshadowed by the perilous events of 9/11 and apparently no further inquiry was made about the missing money or at least none that I could find. So I am left to believe that to this day it has not been solved, despite ever more spending on the military in the name of fighting terrorism and homeland security.

NOTE: If this is a hoax, y'all feel free to jump in and set us straight, because from my search of the internet it appears to be the real deal! I founding nothing to the contrary, but who knows it could be out there somewhere. I'll continue checking, but for now you might as well read the whole story and checkout the video.

David Suzuki has called for political leaders to be thrown in jail for ignoring the science behind climate change. At a Montreal conference last Thursday, the prominent scientist, broadcaster and Order of Canada recipient exhorted a packed house of 600 to hold politicians legally accountable for what he called an intergenerational crime. Though a spokesman said yesterday the call for imprisonment was not meant to be taken literally.

Iran Seeking Nukes After All

Wednesday, Feb. 6, Moscow followed Washington in voicing concern that the launch of Iran’s Safir-1 space rocket Monday, Feb. 4, attested to the existence of a nuclear weapons program. This diametrically contradicts the US National Intelligence Estimate of last December, which concluded Iran had shelved its covert military nuclear program in 2003.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Iran’s “space” missile was cause for worry. Such technology, she said, is the same as that needed to deliver a nuclear bomb. *** Wednesday, Feb. 6, Russian deputy foreign minister Alexander Losyukov followed suit. He commented that Monday’s test launch of Iran’s “Safir-1 (Explorer-1) raises suspicions over Tehran’s claims of peaceful nuclear intentions and suggested its possible desire to create a nuclear weapon.

You may have heard about the Berkley city council passing a series of measures aimed at pushing a Marine recruitment office out of town. The message was clearly “you are not welcome in our city.” Code Pink, the looney pink peace birds, have been granted a permanent parking space in front the recruitment office by the same council for the express purpose of protest (harassment). They spray paint the building and discourage citizens from talking with recruiters.

Now several senators and a house member have written a bills to remind the city of Berkley of the vital service these Marines provide them:

U.S. Senators James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina), Saxby Chambliss (R-Georgia), Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-Oklahoma), John Cornyn (R-Texas), and David Vitter (R-Louisiana) introduced the Semper Fi Act of 2008. The bill would rescind over $2 million in hidden earmarks for Berkeley, California in the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill, and transfer the funds to the Marine Corps. U.S. Congressman John Campbell (R-California) is introducing a companion bill in the House of Representatives.

One earmark provides $243,000 in taxpayer dollars for the organization Chez Panisse http://www.chezpanisse.com/ to create gourmet organic school lunches in the Berkeley School District. *** Another earmark would spend $975,000 in taxpayer dollars for the University of California in Berkeley Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service, to create a new endowment and cataloging the papers of Congressman Robert Matsui. U.C. Berkeley currently already has a $3.5 billion endowment.

washington.jpgI wondered how our first president might view the divisions and rancor created by our two party system in this Presidential race of 2008. The mud has been flying amongs the candidates and it will soon by flying at the party's themselves.

Washington had a lot to say about our govenment and in particular about political parties. In short, he loathed them and often said they the source of a lot of misery and acrimoney among patriots. He also saw them as a tool for manipulation by a foreign power (i.e. the money link between Dems, Clinton and China.) Washington was a man of great vision and you would do well to consider what he had to say about a lot of things, not just political parties.

Here are a few comments by our founding father that seem as relevant today as they did in 1796 when he gave his farewell address:

Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally.

Super Tuesday Plus One

...some good news and some bad news

Super Tuesday is over and it shakes out like this, the Republican presidential candidate needs 1191 delegate votes to win the nomination. Currently we have McCain in the lead with 559 and Romney with 265, still plenty of states left to count before we can declare a winner. Mike Huckabee has 169 and if his delegates eventually go to Romney it would be almost a dead heat. On the other side it's even closer. Hillary Clinton has captured 783 delegates and needs 2025 to win. Obama is right behind her with 709 and of course Edwards is out. Mrs. Clinton got a boost from California with 52% of the vote verses Obama's 42%. Despite Hillary's capture of California, this race is considered tied.

On the ballot propositions it appears that Prop 93 (term limits) has failed, although many votes are yet to be counted. 53 percent of voters were opposed to the measure while 47 percent were in favor. This means that local Assemblyman Rick Keene is termed out of office this year. However, he has a contingency. He planned well ahead of this vote and selected Dan Logue of Oliverhurst to be his successor, thus maintaining by proxy his voter control and influence until he can make his bid for the State Senate. It's only my humble opinion, but I think this plan will only work if it can be kept secret. I have the feeling that voters don't like being manipulated, they don't like secret deals for career advancements nor do they like one politician passing his regime on to his chosen successor because it then has the taint of dynasty building or something akin to nepotism, then again I could be wrong (read VOTING below).

Assembly candidate Sue Horne (Grass Valley) has similar backing from Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa who will also be seeking the same Senate seat as Keene. Both Assemblymen are popular and well respected, however this backroom play threatens to tarnish some of their credibility if voters become aware why both men have invested so heavily in supporting Horne and Logue for the 3rd Assembly District. This is perfectly legal, but its an ends justifies the means kind of career move that we see too often in politics and personally, I had hoped for better, because I hold both of these men in high esteem and I wish they had just run straight up for election without trying to use these other candidates for leverage.

Both Horne and Logue have garnered a number of high powered endorsements and hundreds of thousands in big money contributions by riding on the coat tails of the Assemblymen who have selected them.

(Full disclosure - I am the 3rd candidate in this Assembly race for District 3 and therefore you can take my comments with self-serving biased if you wish, I would understand. However, for those who know me well, you know I would still take the same position even if I were not in the running)

The gaming propositions appear to have won with 56% of the vote. A simple majority was needed to win. This now gives 4 Tribes considerably more influence within the Indian Gaming Monopoly that dominates California gaming. They will make billions off the new laws and this totally justifies why these tribes spent over $100 million dollars to buy the votes. It was a smart business move and it worked.

The cash strapped Republican Party received some very generous financial support with promises of more to come to endorse these propositions done under the pretence they will substantially add revenues to the state budget. However, only a fraction of what the casinos will take in will go to the State. The four tribes are now allowed to add up to 17,000 slot machines in addition to the 8,000 they already operate. All the machines will be located on Indian lands in existing casinos. The tribes determine the formula by which the state will receive their cut of the action, which could be anywhere from 15-25% of what is left after all the deductions, overhead and hidden revenues. I'll bet (no pun intended) the $9 billion figure that was touted as State revenues over the next 10 years come no where close.

London - A traditional Shrove Tuesday pancake race in Britain was tossed off the menu due to overbearing health and safety regulations, newspapers reported. The fun event in Ripon, northern England, is an annual Shrove Tuesday charge along a city street by schoolchildren, choristers and office workers, flipping pancakes as they go. But the organisers felt forced to scrap the merriment this year due to the sheer cost of complying with regulations.- Reuters

Scientific political research has shown time after time, when it's a matter of the brain verses heart, the heart wins. And when it comes to which candidate you will support, fear trumps anxiety, anxiety trumps hope and they all trump logic and reason when things get really rough as in 9/11. It's a flight to security and suddenly all the politicians are talking security..

The experts are saying our little human brains can only absorb so much reason and when the chips are down the brain turns over its power to our base primal instincts, as in flight or fight. Sharon Begley from News Week writes about how voters vote, "It is a core tenet of political psychology that voters know nothing. Or next to nothing." So they come up with catch phrases us voters can hang onto long enough to cast a ballot. Depending on the moment, this will largely be determined by how we feel. Are we enthusiastic, or are we anxious or fearful? Do we jump for fear or leap for hope? It all depends on the moment, says Begley.

"It is a core tenet of political psychology that voters know nothing."

In 1992 when it was Bush v Clinton polls showed that barely 15% even knew both candidates supported the death penalty, but a far greater number knew Bush hated broccoli and Clinton wore briefs.

Begley writes, "The fact that people have what is euphemistically called cognitive-processing limitations—most cannot or will not learn about and remember candidates' records or positions—means voters must substitute something else for that missing knowledge." That is why 60% of us vote solely on party affiliation, says a study by Drew Weston, psychologist at Emory University. The next criteria are the single issue voters. Anti-war or Peacenik, pro-choice or anti-abortion...one issue decides the vote. Isn't that brilliant?

Getting nervous? You should be. They are talking the mainstay of democracy, the American voters.

When voting your party doesn't apply, and when the candidates don't differ much on the issues, you have to choose on some other basis," says political scientist Richard Lau of Rutgers University, coauthor of the 2006 book "How Voters Decide." And this is where we come full circle and back to that "gut feeling" that involves so much fear and anxiety. The conservatives in Spain had a lock on the election until the Muslim terrorists blew up a train station and people thought, "You can't protect us!" So, they voted in the socialists who promised a new direction for security, which was based largely on just staying away from the USA.

Let’s take this a bit further. 12% of the population thinks Gandhi, Stalin and Churchill were mythical figures, but half of these believe Robin Hood and Sherlock Holmes were real. After tens of thousands of traffic deaths, fully 20% of the drivers still don't wear a seat belt. Only 17 percent of young adults in the United States could find Afghanistan on a map, according to a new worldwide survey released in 2002! The youth vote in 08 will likely be the deciding factor, how do you like that? It's scary....and this is what we are up against!

For more information on this I suggest you read "The Reasoning Voter" by Samuel Popkin of the University of California, San Diego. His book is now considered a classic for explaining the precocious whims of the voter. One example from his book shows Gerald Ford attempting to eat tamale without removing the husk. He nearly choked. This faux paux sent a signal to Hispanic voters, "hey this guy is out of touch with us and obviously he must not care very much about our vote", so they voted for Reagan instead. Right choice, wrong reason. Ah, the precocious voters!

All this makes the primaries unpredictable and voters...well, untrustworthy. It is yet one more explanation why we too often get the kind of government we get, that we so frequently criticize for all its flaws, ignorance, ineptitude and corruption!

Governments R Us!

57% of us are expected to vote (down from 70% in the 1960's) in California this year, this includes the senile, the crack whores, coke heads, derelicts, the yet-to-be-convicted psychotics, pedophiles, the emotionally insecure and immature, reckless drivers who vote recklessly, chronic alcoholics, gang members without a felony record, the "dead people for democrats" and many others that all make up what we jokingly call "society" and oddly not a zoo. And then there is Y-O-U-R vote. You the thinking, the responsible citizen-voter v. THEM. Your quality, informed vote has never mattered more! America is under seige by too many of the other kind of voters and that is the biggest threat to us and not from any foreign invasion!

Reflecting the government's decision to abandon the "aggressive rhetoric" of the so-called war on terror, the guide tells civil servants not to use terms such as Islamist extremism or jihadi-fundamentalist but instead to refer to violent extremism and criminal murderers or thugs to avoid any implication that there is an explicit link between Islam and terrorism."

I've got a phrase for Whitehall, you can dress a pig in bloomers, but it's still a pig. Why would anyone except some liberal bureaucrat even try to avoid the obvious link between Islam and terrorism? There is a link! Let's be real, lives are on the line here. We can't keep debating stuff like this anymore.

WASHINGTON — Tuesday dawns as the biggest day of uncertainty in the 2008 presidential campaign, one that already has destroyed conventional wisdom.

John McCain, Barack Obama and Rudy Giuliani all can attest to that. Arizona Sen. McCain is resurrected as front-runner of a Republican Party that remains uneasy about him. Illinois Sen. Obama has shed doubts about his experience to draw even with the once heavily favored establishment Democrat, Hillary Rodham Clinton. And former New York Mayor Giuliani's once-promising challenge wilted in his only real test in Florida.

Today's voting in 24 states from sea to sea creates opportunities for even more surprises, especially among Democrats, whose nomination fight has become a historic struggle between Clinton and Obama. The contest increasingly appears to be headed for late-winter and spring showdowns.

Since Democrats apportion convention delegates based on vote percentages, neither is likely to come out of Tuesday with a prohibitive claim on the nomination — unless there is yet another surprise turn in the nomination road.

Among Republicans, McCain appears poised to have a big day Tuesday. He leads former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts in most key Super Tuesday states, although California — the biggest prize of all — appears to be so close that its primary could be unsettled well into the night or early Wednesday.

Two Writers - Two Locations

Because some of you have wondered, I just wanted to make it clear that Tina writes from her office on the north side of Chico (and sometimes from her Villa in the Cote D'Azur region in the South of France) and I write to you from my humble home near the Upper Park. I can throw a rock and hit a jogger from here, I'm that close.

Tina and I are only connected through the marvels of internet. Thanks Al for inventing that among your many other great inventions, like the solar toaster, the windup cell phone, recycled toilet paper and elastic dentures. Somehow those never really caught on like the internet,

Tina and I rarely confer on which articles to write. Basically we just kind of do our own thing. I know it seems like sometimes we are the sharing the same brain, our thoughts run so similar, but maybe that's because we're from the same generation and grew up with a lot of common background.

Super Bowl Game - What An Upset!

I hope you didn't have any money on the Patriots yesterday. This game is being considered as the biggest upset in Super Bowl history. For 17 games the Patriots have been running up and down the field with the best quartback in the business, but they couldn't extend their wins one more game!

I kept expecting the Pats to get in gear right after the first interception, then it dragged on right into half time and I kept waiting, finally we're in the last moments of the 4th quarter and I firmly expected Tom Brady to come up with a mircle save to preserve New England's undefeated season, but it just never happened.

Plaxico Burress caught the winning touchdown and this same guy also predicted a 23-17 New York victory, as it turned out it was a 17-14 win in an unbelievable game that even a fiction writer could not have done better. So ends Super Bowl XLII.

A Barack Obama surge has wiped out Democratic White House foe Hillary Clinton's once-gaping opinion poll leads on the eve of "Super Tuesday," a historic national nominating showdown.

The former first lady, voice almost a whisper and fighting off a cough, wiped a tear from her eye Monday, as she appeared at Yale University, where her political journey started as an earnest 1970s student in bell-bottom pants.

"Well I said I would not tear up, already we are not exactly on the path," said Clinton, 60, as she set off on a gruelling final-day campaign swing to battle Obama for votes in northeastern Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Obama, 46, boosted by new polls showing him chasing down Clinton, even in her strongholds, meanwhile headlined another high-octane rally in New Jersey, a battleground state where he is breathing down his rival's neck.

The cliffhanger Democratic race contrasted with signs that Senator John McCain would all but settle the Republican nominating fight Tuesday, to complete one of the most staggering comebacks in recent US political history.

Rambo-Go See This Movie!

Rambo...the mature man...has found quiet, if not peace, back in a jungle setting. He remains the reluctant warrior, living out his days on the river. But when faced with the inevitable he is compelled by his code and his calling to step up and do what needs to be done.

Right from the beginning this movie hits those who are naive, who wish to appease, with great big doses of reality. It does so with elements of grace, found in Rambo's interactions with well-meaning missionaries, contrasted with hellish acts of terror. The special effects will not disappoint...they are incredible, pushing the "envelope," as they say in the biz, well beyond those in "Saving Private Ryan." This over-amplification of violence is made reasonable, however, by the very timely and appropriate context of the movie which is: evil people are real and will hurt and kill you heartlessly!

Go see this movie...Stalone does a stellar job...again.

Al Qaeda fanatics plumbed to sickening new depths yesterday when they turned two women with Down's syndrome into human bombs to kill 99 people in Baghdad. The unwitting pawns were apparently fooled into wearing explosive vests which were then detonated remotely by mobile phones as the women mingled with crowds. The two blasts caused carnage at two busy markets in the Iraqi capital's deadliest atrocity since last spring. *** A U.S. military spokesman conveyed the sense of outrage over the depravity of the masterminds.
"They have shown their true demonic character," said Lieutenant-Colonel Steve Stover. *** Involving women in fighting violates religious taboos in Iraq, but extremists are recruiting females and youths to stage suicide attacks in a desperate attempt to beat tightened security measures.


Housing Could Drop 25% and Last Until 2010

While a 25% decline is unprecedented in modern times, some economists are beginning to talk about it. "We now see potential for another 25% to 30% downside over the next two years," says David A. Rosenberg, North American economist for Merrill Lynch (MER), who until recently had expected a much smaller slide.

Shocking though it might seem, a decline of 25% from here would merely reverse the market's spectacular appreciation during the boom. It would put the national price level right back on its long-term growth trend line, a surprisingly modest 0.4% a year after inflation. There's a recent model for this kind of return to normalcy after the bursting of a financial bubble. The stock market decline that began in 2000 erased most of the gains of the boom of the second half of the 1990s, leaving investors with ordinary-sized returns.

Why might housing prices plunge violently from here? Remember the two powerful forces that pushed them up: lax lending standards and the conviction that housing is a fail-safe investment. Now both are working in reverse, depressing demand for housing faster than homebuilders can rein in supply. By reinstituting safeguards such as down payments and proof of income, lenders have disqualified thousands of potential buyers. And many people who do qualify have lost the desire to buy. "A down market is getting baked into expectations," says Chris Flanagan, head of research in JPMorgan Chase's (JPM) asset-backed securities group. "People say: I'm not buying until prices are lower.'" He predicts prices will fall about 25%, bottoming in 2010. For the whole story click here.

MANDATES REDUCE CONTROL OVER BUDGET

You know what a mandate is in political terms? It is a legal demand that government spend X amount of dollars on a particular area, like welfare or the military.

When they are unfunded mandates it gets even more dangerous for a balanced budget. Its one thing to mandate that 30% of sales taxes be spent on education, it's quite another to say we must spend, oh say, $38 billion from the general fund on education, just as a made up example.

Where's that $38 billion coming from? See, how risky these unfunded mandates can get and right now mandates and unfunded mandates represent about 70% of the nation's budget. That is 70% of the our vast monitary resources that is beyond debate or control of Congress! And each entitlement program that is mandated only takes away from the responsibility of Congress to manage our budget.

Since I used eduction as a ficticious example you may be interested to know California's Proposition 98 was an initiative passed in November 1988 and amended in June of 1990 by Proposition 111. It provides a minimum funding guarantee (mandates) for school districts, community college districts, and other state agencies that provide direct elementary and secondary instructional programs for kindergarten through grade 14 (K-14).

Mandates, you have to be careful when voting them in.
