"Individual Right"? ...YES!!

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms...shall not be infringed!"
strong>WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Washington D.C.'s sweeping ban on handguns is unconstitutional. The justices voted 5-4 against the ban with Justice Antonin Scalia writing the opinion for the majority. At issue in District of Columbia v. Heller was whether the city's ban violated the Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms" by preventing individuals -- as opposed to state militias -- from having guns in their homes. - CNN

Criminals don't care about the laws, if they did DC would have been one of the safiest cities. I lived near there IT WASN'T. Law abiding citizens should always be able to protect themselves ESPECIALLY in their own homes, PERIOD.
Criminals don't care about gun laws, never have, and never will.

So I guess we can count Olin as one of the many very happy Americans this morning!
I'm very pleased with the Supreme Court's decision too.

As former Law Enforcement, I am extremely happy that the Supreme Court upheld this position. Self defense is a basic right. Now if more people took responsible gun ownership seriously, it would be very uncomfortable for criminals.
Too often the police get there after the fact and are only able to document what has happened and try to find and arrest those responsible. Olin has it exactly right!

Nice to see the Supreme Court interpreting the constitution rather than making new laws based off of their individual preferences.

Right on John. In general people need to be more responsible and held responsible when they mess up.
If we could drop the silly notion that "there is no right and wrong" and start training our kids again we'd also have fewer criminals to worry about:
Remember when:
Entering another's home without being invited was WRONG
Even touching someone elses property without permission was WRONG
Fighting in school, the bus, the playground...was WRONG.
Spitting on the sidewalk, telling a lie, cheating, stealing....

Oh, you mean to stop villifying things and concentrate on behavior. Yeah, you are trying to interject too much common sense.
If you correct behavior, you are going to have to tell someone that they are being bad. That means judging. oooh kinda ify.
You are going to have to convince parents that if they don't discipline their children, society will. oooh that might lead to spankings in the market parking lot.
Then you are going to have to convince a portion of society, that there is a difference between child abuse and discipline. Wait, that won't allow me to rule the lives of others and make sure we are each, equally weak and selfish.
NO its too hard...."Guns is bad"

Two things are absolutely dreadful about the decision: That it was so close, and that some of the “logic” within the (2) dissenting opinions is so prevalent.
Particularly when you apply the dissenting arguments in favor of governmental control of such ‘rights’ to other ‘rights’ such as those covered by the 1st amendment. They utterly fail to understand that our constitution was primarily written to restrain and contain government powers.
If you haven’t…. Just read the first 35 pages (or so) of the majority opinion… it is very very enlightening

Mark, you are so right about it being dreadful that it was so close. Should have been unanimous!
This statement should be repeated over and over again:
They utterly fail to understand that our constitution was primarily written to restrain and contain government powers.
I haven't had the time to read the opinion yet but I'm told it is brilliant...I'll try to get around to posting some of it today.
