Standards Matter

At least 500 California high schools met this year's federal academic targets that were released this morning only because the state uses easier standards for high schools than for elementary and middle schools, a Times analysis has found. But even with this boost, only 48% of the state's high schools met the federal standard of "adequate yearly progress" in this year's results. – LA Times

Please notice the word "adequate". Adequate is a product of low expectation. Why do we not shoot for excellence?

The LAST thing the state wants to do is educate our children properly.
Educated people ask questions.
Imagine what would happen if all of California's voters were smart enought to ask the right questions.
Imagine too, that they were smart enough to see through the less-than-truthful answers given by the politicians.
My God! We'd have to kiss the two-party system goodbye and let the power devolve to the people!
Be careful what you wish for. Education and partisanship are mutually exclusive.

Quentin let's play a game. Let's assume we can zap into an alternate future where all of your suggestions have come true and power has devolved back to the people. What do you suppose would happen next?

I would bet that within a very short time a two party system would be established as people of like interests and beliefs began to assemble together to lobby for the things they believe in. There would also be a few fringe groups of disgruntled types and the usual middle grounders who refuse to take a stand for fear of being labeled. In no time at all we'd be right back where we are now...that is unless anarchy created a long and bloody period that put an end to our great republic having inspired a strong, brutal, charismatic tyrant. Somehow I don't think the American patriotic male would let that happen, however.

"Power to the people" is a silly, juvenile slogan from a rag tag bunch of socialist boomers...give it up man, your too old to hang on to that carp.

The republic you were given is a jewel. Try a little appreciation, you'll feel a lot better.

I think I'm in agreement about the quality of education...probably not about what constitutes a good education though. We'd have to discuss it to find out.
