Strange Serial Murder Case - Suspect Was A State Worker
From the Passadena Star News
The State of California hired this guy despite his bad record. Get this... he had a dishonorable discharge (which right off should prevent government employment) and he had a felony record for burglary and sexual assault and not doing well on parole. Now what possible reason would the State have for hiring such a person, surely not affirmative action? Now it turns out he is LA's worst serial killer....this is just unbelievable! At one point in his career as a sexual predator a hospital actually hired this sicko to be a...patient counselor??? Things like this make believe the inmates are surely running the asylum! Jack Lee
Now the story from the Star: "A 72-year-old man is suspected of being a prolific serial killer who raped and killed as many as 30 women in waves of attacks that terrorized Southern California decades ago, police said.
John Floyd Thomas Jr. is charged with two killings, and DNA matching his was found at a total of three other crime scenes in West Los Angeles in the 1970s and Claremont in the 1980s, police Robbery-Homicide Cold Case Detective Richard Bengston said.
Evidence in 25 other killings is being examined, but authorities said they suspect Thomas.
"When all is said and done, Mr. Thomas stands to be Los Angeles' most prolific serial killer," Bengston told the Los Angeles Times in a story published Thursday.
Police planned to reveal details of the case at a news conference.
Thomas was being held in county jail and could not be reached for comment. Officers reached by phone by The Associated Press had no information on whether he had obtained an attorney.
In the first wave of killings in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, a man police dubbed "The Westside Rapist" entered the homes of elderly women who lived alone, raped them and choked them until they passed out or died. The 17 people killed were found with pillows or blankets over their faces.
A decade later and 40 miles to the east, five elderly women in Claremont were found raped and killed, also with blankets or pillows over their faces.
Despite some 20 survivors, detectives didn't connect the two cases. There were conflicting descriptions from victims, a lack of communication between agencies and an absence of DNA technology.
Thomas, who has twice been convicted of sexual assault, had a DNA sample taken last October as part of efforts to build an offender database.
He was arrested at his South Los Angeles apartment on March 31, authorities said. Soon after, he resigned from his job with the State Compensation Insurance Fund in Glendale, where he had worked since 1989.
He was charged April 2 with the murder of Ethel Sokoloff, 68, in 1972, and Elizabeth McKeown, 67, both in Los Angeles.
Bengston said Thomas' DNA also was connected to the scene of a 1975 Los Angeles murder, a 1976 Inglewood murder, and a Claremont killing in 1986.
Thomas was born in Los Angeles. His mother died when he was 12 and he was raised by an aunt and godmother, attended public schools and joined the Air Force in 1956. He was considered sloppy and late and was dishonorably discharged, the Times said, citing military records.
In 1957, he was convicted of burglary and attempted rape in Los Angeles and sentenced to six years in prison. After his release, parole violations sent him back behind bars until 1966.
A few years later, a series of attacks on elderly women began by the so-called "Westside Rapist," who roamed Los Angeles County from Hollywood to Inglewood.
During that time, Thomas was a social worker, hospital employee and salesman.
The attacks stopped in 1978 - the year he went back to prison for the rape of a Pasadena woman.
After his 1983 release, he moved to Chino in San Bernardino County and took a job as a hospital peer counselor in nearby Pomona. That year, a series of attacks on elderly women began that included five slayings in the nearby Los Angeles County town of Claremont.
Investigators say the wave of attacks stopped in 1989 - the year Thomas began working in Glendale, 30 miles away.
Los Angeles police were still investigating at least a dozen other murders connected to an unidentified serial killer who has been dubbed the "Grim Sleeper."

This is just beyond incredible It reminds me of the janitor who worked for the Sacramento School system that raped a young girl and the school NEA did not want him fired.
I might be wrong, but I remember something like that from last year.

This is a good reason why women and men should be armed. The right to keep and bare arms is a right. They maybe alive today if they had been.

I worked for a Probation Department for 30 years. Many, if not most of the black male Probation Officers had felony records. Virtually all the blacks who worked for the endless taxpayer funded "reform the gangster" programs were criminals themselves.
I remember one who was eventually fired for lying on his application and running up a hundred thousand dollar phone bill over a couple of years.
San Francisco Probation Department began sending memos around asking "Who is calling Pittsburgh for hours at a time and running up the phone bill?"
We all assumed it was Pittsburgh PA.
It wasn't, it was a San Francisco suburb, Pittsburgh Ca. San Francisco has one of those business plans whereby workers could call all over the Bay Area for low cost. But someone was spending about 6 hours per day every day for years talking to someone in Pittsburgh.
Eventually it came out. It was one of the affirmative action black male Probation Officers who had been hired after some *&^#% anti White racist Judge ordered the department to dump the written test and background check and hire on the basis of race.
Minimal requirements to be a Probation Officer were
(1) Bachelor's degree
(2) No felony record.
This black male affirmative action trash had no BA degree. He dropped out of high school at age 15. He had an extensive felony record, including manslaughter.
He saw the San Francisco County Probation recruitment Ad posted in the Oakland Parole office when he visited his parole officer.
So he applied and got the job instead of a qualified White.
Black affirmative action women working in government jobs may not be felons themselves, but their menfolk are.
One of the deputy chiefs of police was a black woman whose Father was serving a life sentence in San Quentin for 3 murders.
My last supervisor, a senior Probation Officer supervisor of a unit of 11 Probation Officers was the Mother of 2 illigetimate boys whose Father is in Pelican Bay Prison in Ca for life.
Pelican Bay is the maximum security prison in California. Only the most vicious offenders unmanagable in San Quentin, Folsom etc are sent there.
Her kids are 8 years apart. That means the second one was conceived after he got out of prison after serving his first prison term for murder. Only the 3 strikes law keeps him in.
I'm retired now and I am so glad. When I was younger I was in danger of being raped by the black male government employees I was surrounded by during the work week.
For years, San Francisco Sheriff's department employed a guy who ran the "social work & counseling" program in the city jail 850 Bryant who was a murderer.
Mike Marcum is his name. He was interviewed and hired by the SF sheriff's department while still a prisoner at San Quentin. I think he is retired now.
Think about it folks. According to National Review, about 90 percent of blacks who work work for some government or quasi government entity such as a hospital or school.
They are all affirmative action. Whites are banned from government work, but think who you are exposed to when you go to a government office, black criminals.
The women can and do give your address to their burgular boyfriends and brothers. The men can and do follow you home and do what they will when you are alone and helpless.
If you are against affirmative action, remember who created it and now enforces it. Judges, Judges, Judges.

Jack, Google search the Name Ray Perez. He was a Los Angeles Police Officer. The police departments Background investigators recommended against hiring Perez, because of Narcotics activity in his background. The City Of LA personnel department overrode the recommendation, and he was hired. When I was hired, I applied as a White male, When I went to the City Personnel, they asked me what kind of name was my last name, When I replied, "Portuguese", the response was, great!, I'll put you on my Hispanic list.
Don't ever underestimate the idiocy of the people responsible for overseeing affirmative action.
And for the sake of the Libby's in the crowd, I will reiterate, “the idiocy of the people overseeing affirmative action.” And since Libby isn't great on research, Ray Perez was responsible for the largest police corruption scandal in the past 65 years in LA. You should like him Libby; he took an oath and violated it, just like the abortion doctors you support. Oh am I ranting? Sorry.

Let me make sure I got this straight. You are upset because affirmative action makes it possible for black men, or brown men, to perpetrate the same uproariously corrupt, coplike behaviors in which white men have indulged themselves since the nation's founding. Is that it?
Chortle.

Thomas is obviously a victim of racial profiling, police brutality, and violation of his rights. Having to provide his DNA was clearly an illegal search. Libby, call your ACLU friends immediately. This injustice cannot stand.

Living in what is considered a superb of LA, I can attest to the fear that has plagued woman around here for years. No one wants to be considered a racist, so we talk quietly amongst each other about our fears. Our conversations are often about stories the media refuses to print. Stories of affirmative action county employees, who show very little respect for the people who pay their salaries.
I could spend a couple hours writing about all the incidents I know of where an affirmative action hired policemen violated his oath of office. One incident hit home about two years ago when a good friend of mine was raped by an off duty policeman.
It took all she could muster to fight the powers that be to get this predator off the LA police force. He had the full weight of the city of LA, the County, the State and the NAACP fighting to destroy this woman's reputation. I thank God that in the end justice did prevail, but not before her reputation was tarnished forever.
One can only imagine how many more employees of the government are lurking around like Mr Thomas was. How many have gotten away with crimes our media refuses to admit even happen, and how many more work down the street from where I live.
Forgive me if I display a bit of anger here, but this predator was working in my town and the whole incident scares the living hell out of me. The government I expect to protect me has left me and all the women in this city vulnerable to this scum.

No Libby, as per usual you are completely wrong! I am upset, because Affirmative Action, fails to select the best candidate for a job, and makes that decision based on Race. As a Supervisor of mine once told a Captain of ours, who was touting Affirmative Action, "Because of your stand, it doesn't matter that I studied and finished in the top 5% of the Sergeant's Test, I didn't have to, I will be percieved as the Black Sergeant"
Perez had made application to a suburban police department, during the time he was on the LAPD, they turned him down, based on the same information, the City of LA had, which they ignored.
And I know in "Libby-world" All the corruption of police, millitary etc is white republican, however I would point out the Perez's activities were discovered, investigated and stopped by White, Black and Brown Skinned members ot the LAPD, not the LA times, or the Democrat Party, or you, Libby.
I am not surprised you don't get it, there is so much that you don't get!

One is often overwhelmed with the magnitude of ignorance contained in libby's posts, but here Libby, Let ME see if I got this straight. You seem to think the only black or brown men who are available to be hired for these jobs, have criminal records??
Your willingness to say anything regardless of veracity, is really quite tiresome.
Your skirt is up and your predjudice is showing
