Detectives were combing Queens storage facilities on Monday for stockpiled explosive chemicals that Al Qaeda terror thugs planned to use to bomb New York, sources said.
At the same time, the Daily News has learned that prime terror suspect Najibullah Zazi has confessed he was a jihadist hell-bent on murderous mayhem, the sources said.
NYPD investigators, in coordination with the FBI, hit chemical and fertilizer companies looking for customers who bought bulk and paid cash - and they were also showing up at storage centers in Long Island City.
Investigators believe they were going to use the units to mix chemicals for explosives.
"They're full on, and still going full bore," a counterterror official said of the bomb hunt.
The Department of Homeland Security at the same time has issued a nationwide bulletin asking cops to look at storage facilities.
"Operation Nexus" took on an extra urgency after raids on Queens apartments Zazi visited turned up knapsacks and cell phones. The exact targets are not known, but the find raised the specter of simultaneous blasts like the 2004 attack that killed 191 commuters in Spain.
ABC News reported that investigators believe that there were three teams of four terrorists involved in the planning.
A senior counterterror official said nobody knows for sure who else is out there - or whether the plot is disrupted.
Arrest documents revealed the Denver-based Zazi was carrying a laptop with bomb-making notes when he visited New York on the 9/11 anniversary.
The feds also discovered his fingerprints on batteries and other items that could be used to make explosives. The feds are also investigating reports that Afghan men tried to rent a 26-foot truck from a Queens U-Haul on Sept. 9.
Fertilizer bombs packed into a truck were used by terrorists to attack the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995.
Meanwhile, a bail hearing for Ahmad Afzali, a 37-year-old Queens imam charged with tipping off Zazi that the FBI was on to him was delayed until Thursday. He blew kisses to his wife and father before he was led back to his cell. His lawyer Ron Kuby insisted Afzali was helping investigators when he spoke on Sept. 11 with Zazi, 25.
In Denver, a bail hearing for Zazi was also put off until Thursday. His dad, Mohammed, was ordered released on $50,000 bail and confined to his home. Father and son are charged with lying to the feds. Their cases are expected to be transferred to New York.
The FBI said Zazi, arrested in Colorado on Saturday, has admitted being trained in "weapons and explosives" last year at an Al Qaeda camp in Pakistan.
And sources said for the first time that he admits he was out to kill.
The fears of a mass attack, possibly a hit on the transit system, were revealed last week when the feds raided several Flushing apartments that Zazi visited. He returned home Sept. 12. The feds contend Afzali is a double agent who tipped off Zazi - and then lied about it.
FBI wiretaps caught Zazi's father telling his son that he'd gotten a call from Afzali warning him the G-men were showing his photo, authorities said.
While Zazi was on the phone with his dad, Afzali called the suspected terrorist and told him, "They asked me about you guys." Kuby confirmed Afzali had passed on tips to the feds, but insisted he had not warned Zazi.

Ok, I have a serious question here: why are all these coming out now? The Bush admin was terrific at battling these homegrown types. I'm wondering, however, if Bush deliberately kept the arrests quiet so as not to scare off the others in order to catch them, too.

I used to wonder why Obama said that they have rights under our constitutions when we have none under their beliefs. The One said we need to stop calling them terrorists, and that he will not allow them to be questioned. So he released them into the free world in the Bermudas so they could re-group soon.
I finally figured it out.

Good Heavens! Don't read this inflammatory drivel. Check out the Huffington Post. The first think that any thinking person ought to have asked themselves is: "why on earth have the "authorities" moved on this man well BEFORE they had anything at all that they could take to court?
There is an answer. It ain't pretty.
And it is monumentally infuriating, because now we will never know. He could very well have been just some hapless, shuttle-driving owner of a coffee cart who got frightened into confessing things that are not true. And with every day that passes without the "authorities" finding any untainted evidence of a plot, it becomes more certain that these guys will never be convicted, if they are convicted ... of anything other than being frightened into making statements that are not true.

Obama has never released a single convicted terrorist. The men you are probably referring to were found innocent. By their actions they are intentionally endangering our National Security, and the result will be thousands and thousands of more Americans murdered by Islamic terrorists again. When and if this does happen, their blood will be on Obama's hands because he willingly attacks American Defense Networks (FBI, CIA, military, etc) through his poisonous legislation and witch hunts. It is similar to what Carter and his ignorant CIA Director Turner did in the late 70s, fortunately for us Carter did not have as much success as Obama is.
I take this very personal because I have a very good friend who was a good CIA field guy during Carters administration. Some how his picture, name and assignment appeared in the MSM, courtesy of the leakers in the CIA, aka Turner and his thugs. Don't remember the MSM demanding Carter and his buddies being forced to enplane in Congress how it happened neither.
Well, he was attached to our embassy in Iran, and after the embassy takeover he barely got out of country with his wife and young son. One daughter was working as fisherperson and was not heard from for close to 10 days. She was met at the port when her boat came in and was whisked away to safety. We ended up with the older daughter for a while as she was headed back to the States to go to college. He told me that every contact he had in Iran and Eastern Europe and Asia were killed or just disappeared forever. All this because the MSM was given his picture, name and assignment by someone in Carters administration.

Not saying the FBI isn't corrupt--though I really haven't done enough research on the current FBI to tell whether they are or are not--but I can tell you that many, many other countries have actual "secret police" that are more corrupt than the FBI.

I empathize with Muslims who feel that they are under constant suspicion just for their religious beliefs. I express this often at this site by speaking in defense of most Muslims. However, I do NOT empathize with anyone who believes that their treatment justifies terrorism. Whatever slights against Muslims America has committed--and I believe there have been some significantly bad ones--they are nothing compared to what happened here on 9/11/01. And none of those people who were killed were responsible for American-Islamic relations. You need to pull your head out of your @$$ and realize that what you are saying here is deeply dangerous and can lead to more murder and terrorism. No cause is worth that. You said it right, but maybe I could offer just one more bit of annecdotal information here. See, I have actually worked with the FBI on many cases and I can tell you from personal experience over many years that they were extremely professional and their integrity was among the highest of any groups I have ever worked with, including our military. I have no problem with the FBI.
Sure, one can always point to some one individual that comes along perhaps once in every decade or so and they cause an embarassment to a highly honest law enforcement group, but it is so limited as to be statistically irrelevant.
Anyway K...thank you for setting the record straight. You're a patriot I never thought for an instance you were anything else! I'm proud of you.

Libby I must profess ignorance on this particular subject. At this time I have no factual information on how the FBI "blew" anything. I don't know how anyone else would know either since the FBI doesn't discuss such things until after the trial and maybe never! They are very quiet about such things.
Until then, I would imagine there is just a lot of people speculating about things they did wrong. But, even if they did "blow it", lets not confuse their starched shirt honesty with managing a complex investigation. Two different things in play here, honesty and competence and I was just talking about honesty.
When it comes to handling informants and knowing when to make a bust for maximum effect it is always more an art than a science. So much depends on how skilled the lead agent is and how he reads the informant. Then it still rests on a fair amount of luck mixed with that skill!!! But, remember first it is an art form to do it right and art is always difficult because there are no hard fast rules to guide you through it. I know...been there...

No small thing when you have seen buildings fall down, people jumping from burning buildings, and bodies pulled from square blocks filled with rubble, many of them possibly friends or relatives...up close and personal instead of on TV. Urgency doesn't begin to describe. Getting it right doesn't quite cover it.
