Good News for Your Heart

When you work up a sweat on the treadmill or stationary bike, it sparks the creation of new blood vessels in your heart. Essentially, if any part of your heart is damaged, exercise helps to heal it. No pills required.

That is the stunning finding from researchers at Leipzig University in Germany. The Associated Press reports that Dr. Robert Hollriegel determined in a small study of just 37 people that when those who had serious heart failure rode a bike for up to 30 minutes a day for four months, new stem cells were produced in their bones. In addition, they had more small blood vessels in their muscles. A control group of people who did not exercise had no change in their vessels or muscles.
