An Opinion on Ethics

Opinion by Mr. Manswell

The fundamental problem with individuals who defend their party's political misdeeds by blaming or comparing them to the opposition's equally questionable practices (Jefferson and Doolittle are BOTH crooks) is they sustain and exacerbate the issues.

Do not expect any changes until Americans start thinking like individuals instead of emotionally reacting along political affiliations. To defend Bush by pointing out Clinton's weaknesses does nothing positive. The intellectual immaturity of the majority of Americans is scary. What this country needs is a third party, a truly viable third party comprised of people willing to bring about radical changes to the "machine" that has slowly but surely eroded the principles upon which this country was originally founded. Take the time to read the Constitution, instead of reading People magazine and watching Entertainment Tonight.

I agree wholeheartedly with most of Mr. Manswell's assessment.

I simply do not proscribe to the solution.

I do not see how a powerful thrid party, in and of itself contributes to the process.

Furthermore, there are several parties in the US.

But in order for those parties to get recognition, they have to be able to gather supporters. While this has happened at various points during our history, I think it is more than merely media bias which keeps the two prominant parties at the forefront.

I think it is also worth pointing out, that third parties when they do gain some recognition, end up doing mroe damage than good.

The Bull Moose party had more in common with Taft than Wilson, yet their participation led to a Democratic victory.

Does anyone think that Perot supporters would have preferred Clinton over Bush?

And on the other side, I'm sure Nader is far more fond of Gore than GW.

In short, it is easy feel disenfranchised with one of the two major parties, but the solution is not necessarily a third party.

I for one hope for a Republican Party which will remember Reagan and return to its traditional conservative/libertarian roots.

As Ed McMahon on the Carson show would say, "You are correct sir!"
