PUBLIC DEBATE HEALTHY

by John Freitas, LAPD (Homicide) Ret.

Tina and Jack,

I felt compelled to write and thank you for having a forum for people of different opinions. A place where debate is welcomed and encouraged. And the only restriction I have seen you place on posts is no gratuitous profanity. I feel this compulsion, because for the second time, I have strayed onto one of the other “Northern California Blog” sites, This time told, begrudgingly, “They have a policy against posting unoriginal thoughts which have already had enough play” but that they would make an exception, once they had had a chance to form their response and post my comment." The email I received was dripping with condescension, which I still recognize, even when someone calls me “Mr. Freitas”

Anywho, I digress...The irony is that these two “Progressive” oriented blogs, actively censer thought which does not mirror their own, while simultaneously calling anyone who doesn’t agree with them fascists or dittoheads or whatever the acceptable derogatory name for a conservative is today. I will say again, that the most recent blog administrator did say he would go ahead and post my comment, the other one flat out banned me when I pointed out the legal flaw of an argument they had promulgated.

Anyway I again want to thank you for having a forum for anyone who wants put an idea forth and all you ask is that the author be prepared to back up their assertions with reason and/or facts. What a novel idea! And for those who want to take the path of least resistance and have all of your “long on feelings, short on experience” ideas validated without being questioned. These sites will protect you and keep you comfortable in your ignorance.

Wow, the conservative’s blog doesn’t censor. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT???

This is one of the nicest compliments we've ever received. Thank you John.

Well John the answer is quite simple and also greatly misunderstood by at least half of the population in America...you see John, conservatives are inclusive. ;-)

I'd like to add my thanks to Jack's and offer a few thoughts.

You know the crazy thing is, I really like progressives...with one or two little caveats, they have much to give in our society.

They seem, however, to have trouble considering another point of view which makes discussion and cooperation impossible. People who favor the progressive side of the aisle often provide impressive creativity to a project. Many are responsible for much of the beauty and structure around us...and the entertainment...fahgetaboudit! These accomplishments require attributes that conservatives hold dear. Hard work, commitment, discipline, structure, fiscal responsibility...making a profit. Yet they hold these things in great disdain and balk at the idea that they are important. Instead of using these to solve problems in society they suddenly prefer to look to government...a cold, impersonal and wasteful approach.

When Barbra Streisand had he first ever public concert a few years ago she asked how many conservatives were in the audience. I don't know what she expected but the rather large response surprised her. I have yet to see similar examples of appreciation being shown for the talents and abilities of conservatives. Of course I'm being very general here but in general it's true.

The other frustrating thing is that we care about the same things they care about. It is only the way we approach them that is different, yet they believe that because we don' think government is the answer we don't care. That's the brick wall that will not fall...and it's a da*n shame.

So let's take the opportunity of your letter of thanks to invite those who disagree once again to comment on Post Scripts. If we can get past the brick wall perhaps we can discover some things about one another and the underlying reasons for our differences. It's gotta be better than pounding fists against the brick wall...but it does require a level of civility. If you draw first blood don't expect us to cower in the corner.

Ah, yes! 'Tis so much better to post all comments and then hurl insults at those who would post them! If you draw first blood--and you did, Tina--you have no right to expect civility.

Quentin you hurl insults and then you complain when others follow suit. This is behavior I try to correct in my children. And yes it is better to post all comments, at least those within reason, unless you are unable to support your positions. This has been a test of your intellectual steel.

Perhaps your blog should be called, "Uncomfortable with the Truth."

If you would care to tell me the "first blood" insult I hurled we could discuss it. You might even deserve an apology...but once again I cannot read your mind.
