High Cost of Gas Resulting in Rash of Thefts

Posted by Jack

gas thief.jpgGas thefts, especially the pump and run type, are on the increase. Shown in the picture is a drive away thief who was ordered by the court to stand outside the station she stolen from for 8 hours with this sign in lieu of jail time. She was 90 minutes late...figures. The judge should have given her 30 days, but she said she was out of gas and had to walk.

A recent phenomena are thieves using a drill to tap into your gas tank and drain it's contents. That's incredibly dangerous and it's only a matter of time that some thief is going to blow himself up using that method. He (or she) might only get $25-30 worth of gas, but the damage to your tank could run you several hundred not to mention all the inconvenience. However, a locking cap is still you best defense against theft. Diesel is popular enough to warrant taking precautions there too. At $4.39 a gallon it's a tempting target.
