Slavery - Pointing Fingers and Assigning Guilt
Posted by Jack
I want everyone to read this...it's that important:
"It should also be noted that being angry at the United States of America because of slavery is rather off the mark. During most of the slavery period in what is now called America, there was no United States. The land was settled by colonists, who were British citizens until they revolted. The USA was not an independent country with a working constitution and the authority to pass laws until after 1800. One of the very first laws passed was a law prohibiting the importation of African slaves to the USA. It took a while longer to outlaw slavery entirely, but the USA was the first to do it in world history." DHB
The colonial slave trade represented 7% of the total, so there are a lot of responsible parties in line ahead of colonial America when it comes to slavery, not the least of which are black Africans who participated in and profited from the slave trade and engaged in it regularly for a thousand years before Columbus was in knee pants. Throughout history and as far back as you care to look there have been slaves. Mostly they were white slaves if you study the subject carefully. The Bible gives us a good idea who the slaves were, Roman and Greek history does too. In the backdrop of world history DHB's comments about the United States are even more profound!
(1864 cartoon showing America embracing a wounded black soldier.) While there were blacks slaves in the colonies, there were also white slaves that were mostly indentured servants who worked off their debt just as many blacks were emancipated for the same reason by caring and repentant white owners who grew to detest the practice of slavery for any reason. Granted, this was the exception and not the rule, but it was the beginning of change and it started here and that is also worth noting too. Jack Lee END
Fun facts: It is not possible to tickle yourself. The cerebellum, a part of the brain, warns the rest of the brain that you are about to tickle yourself. Since your brain knows this, it ignores the resulting sensation.
