12 States Bring Lawsuit Over Coal Regulations

Posted by Tina

Twelve states have joined together to bring a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over its unreasonable and punishing regulations on coal. The state included in the suit are West Virginia, Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, South Carolina and Wyoming.

The Daily Signal has the story:

“This lawsuit represents another effort by our office to invalidate the EPA’s proposed rule that will have devastating effects on West Virginia’s jobs and its economy,” West Virginia Atty. Gen. Patrick Morrisey said in a statement.

The state, which heavily relies on coal, has already begun to feel the regulation’s impact. A major coal company, Alpha Natural Resources, announced last week that it might lay off 1,100 West Virginia mining employees, citing the rule as one of the reasons.

Morrisey said his office plans to use “every legal tool available” to defend coal miners and their families from the Obama Administration’s “overreach.”

“We can’t afford to see more announcements like we saw with Alpha Natural Resources,” Morrisey said.

Our nation continues to rely on coal for 40% of its energy. The new restrictions do not provide a time frame to allow companies to financially adjust and place an economic burden that will translate to lost jobs and higher energy prices for the American people. It’s good to see the states joining together to act on behalf of the people since Harry Reid is blocking attempts by the House to respond to the concerns of the people.

    This broke my heart.

We have to get rid of liberal progressives from Congress and the WH and turn this country around.

Expect another well-deserved slapdown by the courts for the continuing Foolish Fed goofernment overreach.

  3. Dewey says:

“While every job and every dollar of revenue generated by the coal industry provides an economic benefit for the state of West Virginia and the counties where the coal is produced, the net impact of the West Virginia coal industry, when taking all revenues and expenditures into account, amounted to a net cost to the state of $97.5 million in fiscal year 2009.”

What would you expect the environmental lobby to conclude Dewey.

They found one year when revenues could be featured in a bad light…a year when nat gas was supplying more energy because it was cheaper…so typical.

Did their study include the revenue from businesses that will be lost when skyrocketing energy prices force businesses to close? Did it evaluate the harm to families when their home heating bills eat up all the money they have for food?

The enviro’s are loco. Their demands are unreasonable and their arguments incomplete.

Wind and solar cannot provide the electricity our nation needs…coal produces 40% or more of the nations energy at any given time. It is reliable, it is clean and can be cleaner given time.

Conversion to other sources should be a consequence of naturally unfolding conditions. Forcing the glo-warmers desires is harming people unnecessarily and if they get their way all of us will pay a hefty price…as if we aren’t already paying for the left

Another picture is worth a thousand words.

Good chart Peggy. The disparity needs some fleshing out to be complete.

One of the contributing factors is the increase in the number of people that became very wealthy during to electronics and computer innovation boom.

A similar thing happened in the entertainment and sports fields.

People who work for government are making good money too.

So the disparity has to do with the greater numbers of people making really big money as well as the fact that wages at the low end have stagnated and jobs have disappeared. I attribute most of that to global conditions, catastrophes, emerging markets and our enemies…and the worst of it to really bad policy over the last six years.

I heard the other day that most Americans, including boomers, have less than 3K in savings and investment.

  8. Peggy says:

Tina, I’m not surprised most of us have less in our savings these days. With the increased cost of food and gas alone it has to be easting away at what people can save. The choice of putting gas in the car or food on the table has to come first to care for their families today over how they’re going to live in the future.

The huge tax increase last year hit me hard when I filed this year. I thought I’d be getting money back because of some large medical expenses (dental and an ambulance ride) I had that were not covered by my insurance. But, because of the increase of the amount allowed I didn’t meet the minimum. Therefore, non of the $6,000 I paid out was returned and I had to pay
even more by April 15th. Plus, my estimated tax payments more than tripled.

I don’t believe I’m unique and completely understand why savings accounts are shrinking for everyone except the super rich. Obama’s policies are hurting the middle and low income people horribly.

    Here’s an interesting video.

My father-in-law, who was a successful small business owner, used to say, “To be successful in business you needed three things; knowledge, time and money.

I couldn’t load the video at your link, Peggy, but did find it at cafehayek.com. I love George Gilder and used to read his newsletter.

Terrific video…knowledge is a powerful thing when freedom can give it wings!
