North Korea: Secretary Tillerson Calls on UN Members to Keep Their Commitments

Secretary Rex Tillerson chaired a briefing on North Korea with the UN Security Council today. In yet another demonstration of the administrations work ethic and strong leadership Tillerson called on the members to keep their word:

(CNSNews.com) – Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Friday chaired a U.N. Security Council briefing on North Korea, calling on U.N. member states “to fully implement commitments that they made regarding North Korea” in two UN Security Council resolutions and to “suspend or downgrade diplomatic relations with North Korea.”

“I propose all nations take these three actions beginning today. First, we call on U.N. member states to fully implement commitments that they made regarding North Korea. This includes all measures required in Resolutions 2321 and 2270. Those nations which have not fully enforced these resolutions fully discredit this body. Second, we call on countries to suspend or downgrade diplomatic relations with North Korea,” Tillerson said.

He also called on UN member states to “increase North Korea’s financial isolation” and levy new sanctions against North Korean “entities and individuals supporting its weapon and missile programs and tighten those that are already in place.”

“The United States also would much prefer countries and people in question to own up to their lapses and correct their behavior themselves, but we will not hesitate to sanction third country entities and individuals supporting the DPRK’s illegal activities. We must bring maximum economic pressure by severing trade relationships that directly fund the DPRK’s nuclear missile program,” Tillerson said, referring to North Korea’s formal name – the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Tillerson also called on the international community “to suspend the flow of North Korean guest workers and to impose bans on North Korean imports, especially coal.”

He signaled America’s willingness to use military force if necessary but reiterated that we would much prefer ” a negotiated solution to this problem.” He chastised those who would help the North Korean leader on humanitarian grounds: ” (…it) means enabling cruelty and suffering…The regime’s pursuit of nuclear weapons does not serve its own national security or the well-being of a people trapped in tyranny.”

Good. America is assuming a critical leadership role and projecting the expectation that member nation’s will keep commitments they set for themselves.

Good T-Rex interview with Brett Baier of FOX posted at The Conservative Treehouse includes this:

QUESTION: A couple more things on this: Today, your spokesperson, Mark Toner, said that you wanted to see progress in the short term, but pressed on that, “What is short term, what is progress,” there was no answer. So I guess the question is: How long is the U.S. willing to wait?

SECRETARY TILLERSON: Well, we’ve got to see a real change on the part of the posture of the regime in North Korea. Now, how do we see that? Well, we’ll wait as long as it takes, as long as the threat is manageable.

Now, what we’ve seen thus far is two significant dates have gone by in the 105th birthday of the founder as well as their significant Armed Forces Day on the 25th. On neither of those days were what we consider to be serious tests carried out. There was no ICBM test. There have been no further nuclear test. And we have asked and said to them first and foremost these provocative tests must end. Beyond that, then we’ll be talking to them about other indications we will be looking for from them that they truly are ready to engage on a completely different basis for future talks.

QUESTION: Isn’t that a version of strategic patience?

SECRETARY TILLERSON: We will know it when we see it.

QUESTION: Do you fear that Kim Jong-un is unstable, not able to make reasonable decisions on this front?

SECRETARY TILLERSON: All indications, Bret, by intelligence agencies – and there have been a number of independent psychologists who’ve done analysis as best they can – all indications are that he is not crazy. He may be ruthless. He may be a murderer. He may be someone who in many respects we would say by our standards is irrational. But he is not insane. And indications are in the past, and when certain events have happened, he has taken rational – he’s made rational choices. Now, we don’t have a long history with this young leader, only about five years, so we recognize we are dealing with a relative level of unknown and uncertainty. That is part of the risk that the President has been willing to take in this approach. (emphasis mine)</blockquote

This man projects strength and a steady hand. We’re very fortunate to have him as Secretary of State.
