Government Worker Wage Gap

Posted by Tina

President Trump’s plan to downsize our bloated federal bureaucracy is more meaningful than I thought. In addition to the inefficiencies the bloat represents it’s been revealed that government workers have been living like kings while the private sector paid in lower and stagnant wages. The percentages are staggering.

Private sector business doesn’t have the convenient ability to print money or the ability to tax that ensures government workers when “taken care of” don’t have to feel the pain of a lousy economy as their private sector neighbors do. No wonder so many of them vote to the left. When you can vote yourself more money and benefits who cares what goes on next door. The elite crowd, it appears, is bigger than we thought. It includes even workers with only a high school education. The gap is pretty much standard for all except those with PhD’s:

To get a clear picture of public-private pay gap, the Congressional Budget Office looked at pay scales from 2011 through 2015, controlling for things like location, occupation, veteran status, demographics, as well as education.

It found that among those with a high school diploma, federal civilian workers earned 34% more, on average, than similar workers in the private sector. But government workers also get benefits that are 93% more generous than the private sector. When you combine the two, these federal workers get 52% more than their private sector counterparts.

Those with a bachelor’s degree made 21% more in government, the CBO found, and those with a master’s degree made 5% more in wages and benefits. The only group that did worse in government were those with a doctorate, who earned an average 18% less, on average, in the federal government than in the private sector.

The CBO also found that this pay gap has sharply widened for most federal workers — thanks to the fact that the government kept passing out raises throughout the Obama years while private sector wages flatlined. The report shows that federal workers got raises averaging more than 3% from 2009 through 2015.

As a result, the pay gap for high school educated workers went from 36% in 2010 to 53% in 2015. The gap for workers with a bachelor’s degree climbed from 15% to 21%.

The CBO finding confirms other reports that have found a substantial pay gap between government and private sector workers. The libertarian Cato Institute, for example, put it at 78% — and rising.

And these figures do not take into account the wide gap in productivity between private sector workers and their government counterparts.

The article puts forth one example of the productivity gap it only took three private sector employees to do what sixteen were hired to do by the federal government. At present the government employs 2.2 million workers.

We aren’t getting much bang for the buck! Are we being taxed too much or what?

The State Department plans to cut 2,300 U.S. diplomats and civil servants — about 9 percent of the Americans in its workforce worldwide … The majority of the job cuts, about 1,700, will come through attrition, while the remaining 600 will be done via buyouts, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the decision hasn’t been publicly announced.

A necessary and good beginning!

And private industry has to make a profit to cover expenses otherwise they’ll be OUTTA business.
Those goofernment workers who suffer from prolifigate spending should be required to return the $$ out of their OWN pockets. Betcha that would make them think twice about how the taxpayer $$ is spent!
Abolishing Civil Service protection would be a giant step toward accountability as well.

    • Tina says:

      Good idea, J, in principle.

I’m not sure how we could force them to give back what we agreed to give them.

I’d be happy if they would just wise up…and see at how big government ultimately hurts most Americans. But if the last eight years hasn’t made them wonder and take an interest…so much unemployment, stagnant wages, businesses lost…I don’t know what will.

    • TruthToPower says:

      WHAT ARE YOU GUYS THINKING?

      Your taxes go on WAR

a 300 Million dollar bomb was just dropped for no results or reasons at all.

Blaming people for making a decent wage? WOW A new Low here

The only salaries that need to be dropped are the salaries of Congress. Their medical too.

HOW MUCH DO WE SPEND PROTECTING TRUMPS FAMILY AS THEY TRAVEL THE WORLD DOING PRIVATE BUSINESS?

or the lavish NY and Mar-a-lago rips?

No the whole problem is the working man not the crooks

do you even see how close this sounds to Germany WW2?

    • TruthToPower says:

getting rid of all government workers to send to privatized companies?

So the law says their job would to be to make investors profits before doing any service.

      #FASCISM

Do you understand what you are actually saying?

  2. Joe says:

I bet if you checked Commiefornia it would be even worse. The government employee unions and the politicians they’ve bought will bleed the taxpayers white before anything changes.

    • TruthToPower says:

Funny Joe California is the worlds 6th largest economy, and you say the poor states are better?

      • Tina says:

Yes…the “poor states” are better at creating an atmosphere in which the average Joe can start his own business and climb the ladder of success, The “poor states” are better at creating conditions in which the middle and poor classes have an opportunity to thrive.

California has a large economy mostly because of a few very wealthy (lefty) corporations (Apple Google Facebook)…you know the guys you hate! The guys who have made it impossible for middle and lower classes to live in those areas. How does that work as a positive in your world?

        • TruthToPower says:

          Tina

          No starting a Business? LOLOLOL

The big guys will take you out.

          How do I know?

cause a decade ago that was my job. We moved into town and I took all your business.

Starting a business is not a right. It is a skill.

If you are not skilled enough to maintain a business than????

I ran 3 businesses in CA. I sold all of them for a profit.

      • Joe says:

Chris, so the state is the 6th largest economy because of the state’s government employees?

        • TruthToPower says:

No Joe it is because of our Private Sector Business.

Do some research and we can discuss.

If you did not know that to start with than….. do some research.

We fluctuate between 6th and 7th.

We pay fed taxes in and get less back than these small red states. They are sucking off us.

    • Tina says:

Joe I just posted another article that shows California is the worst of all the states.

That hog has it exactly right.

I don’t blame the individuals. Many of them simply took a job in good faith. The union bosses in collusion with politicians (mostly Democrats) and against the citizens have driven wages to this level. Unfortunately those who thinks this is about a “decent wage” don’t have a clue that they are killing the machine that makes all wages possible…government is paying inflated wages to an oversized work force. there’s no way that can be sustained. This is the most obvious evidence of a stooopid “sheeple” following for the redical left i can think of…good Lord listen to this drivel:

Blaming people for making a decent wage?”

A “decent” wage is a wage that’s earned. Inflated government job wages are not a function of production or skill but a function of political manipulation. Government workers, along with “the rich” were the only Americans to thrive in the radical Obama administration. While wide swaths of Americans lost their jobs and their businesses, were forced onto food stamps, lost the healthcare insurance they liked, saw their savings disappear as they went more into debt, and were forced to house and feed their unemployed 20- 35 aged children , America’s elitists lived in style.

      • TruthToPower says:

        Newsflash…. Move

why should we tank our economy to a failed ideology.

really move cause you can exploit workers in a red state, I know people making $4.50 an hour….

        Real slave workers out here

  3. Joe says:

After reading this article I am sure Miss Tina and Captain Jack are singing that old Willie Nelson song, “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Anything But Government Employees.”

    • Tina says:

Oh Joe, I doubt if you meant to say that.

Mama’s don’t let your babies grow up to be lefites would be my song. I know that in the long run a government that is bigger and more “prosperous” than the citizens it claims to serve will become Venezuela. Wouldn’t wish that on anyone, LOL.

  4. Libby says:

Did you not see the bit about pissed American Airlines investors. Go find it. There is a very simple reason why government employees make good wages and private sector employees do not … except on the rare occasions that management is foreseeing and enlightened … and then all them greedy, savage capitalists sell their stock.

(I had erased it, but now I have decided to put it back.). Tina, you are a fool.

    • Tina says:

Libby call me a fool if you like but you still have not explained how lefty tax policy works to create abundance n the overall ecoomy.

Your record is the record of the last eight years…a period of less than 2% growth, stagnant wages, lousy job market, profits for the big lefty players on Wall Street, massive and growing debt, dying businesses, a dying middle class, a growing poverty class, a health insurance plan with high premiums and deductibles, and a lot of widespread misery.

Why would you expect the airlines to be doing any better than the majority of businesses in America. The people have no money to spend; they’re going in the hole at alarming rates…especially the young people with high college debt and no job futures…Get a freaking clue!

There is NOTHING enlightened about your blind defense of a system that fails every single time it’s tried! There’s nothing compassionate about it either.

      • TruthToPower says:

This lefty crap is getting old. I tell Democrats the same.

        Red Blue red Blue

and every election Goldman Sachs moves into the cabinet

        Wake UP

  5. TruthToPower says:

And what are these wars for? Corporate Profit and pipelines.

If you care about this country time to wake up.

Let us look at corporate subsidies next maybe oil?

Let us talk about real waste

Where is the Missing millions in Iraq? Why were there Pallets of money being moved around? Why do we not audit the Pentagon who is missing trillions?

No let’s put these working people in their place. Wage slavery is here.

  6. Peggy says:

    California the next Venezuela.

Venezuela’s Maduro hikes minimum wage amid rising protests:

“CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro hiked wages and handed out hundreds of free homes Sunday amid his efforts to counter a strengthening protest movement seeking his removal.
On his regular television show, “Sundays with Maduro,” the president ordered a 60 percent increase in the country’s minimum wage starting Monday. It was the third pay increase the socialist leader has ordered this year and the 15th since he became president in 2013.

It is small solace to workers who seen the buying power of their earnings eroded by a sinking currency and the world’s highest inflation — forecast to accelerate to 2,000 percent next year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

With the latest wage increase and mandatory food subsidies, the minimum take home pay for millions of Venezuelans now stands at 200,000 bolivars a month — or less than $50 at the widely used black market rate.

“We’re here to take care of the workers, those who are most humble, and not the privileges of the oligarchs,” Maduro said.

In addition to the pay hike, he announced a special “economic war” bonus to retirees to make up for what he says are attempts by the opposition to sabotage the economy.

The president also watched as officials in several states handed over the keys to hundreds of new apartments, some built with Chinese funding, bringing to 1.6 million the number of public housing units built by a program started by the late President Hugo Chavez.

The announcements came as government supporters and Maduro’s opponents prepared for rival marches to commemorate May Day on Monday.”

Wasted spending? What could 300 million have done for we the people? fix the water pipes and stop poisoning our kids? get a start on it?

    Waiting

    justify that bomb

    • Joe says:

Earth to Dewey…er…TruthToPower, what does the gooberment employees getting paid more than comparable workers in the private sector have to do with a 300 million dollar bomb?
