Should We Bailout AM-EX?

By Jack Lee

American Express faces lower profits, requests $3.5B aid. Treasury secretary may put it on his Visa. The Federal Reserve said on Monday they were granting a request by American Express to become a bank holding company. This gives them the technical right to apply for some of that 750 billion in bailout money.

The Fed approved the application for American Express and a related company, American Express Travel Related Services, to become bank holding companies. However, relieving the bad debt associated with credit card companies marketing plastic to everyone over the age of 18 was not the original intent of the massive Fed bailout.

Should We Bailout General Motors?

by Jack Lee

It’s your money…you need to speak up!

acobalt.jpgOnce again government is being called on to give taxpayer money to private industry in the name of saving the economy.

Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama both strongly support a bailout for GM. My knee jerk response was on their side. I thought, we can’t let GM fail! We can’t risk 1.5 million people suddenly out of work… that would be a nightmare! And who will build our tanks and guns if we have another major war?

A closer look says something else entirely. GM will be forced to file bankruptcy without the bailout money, but they will continue to operate just like PG&E and a number of airlines have done in past years. The greatest impact will be on the unions, like the UAW. A bailout protects the unions, their labor contracts and lavish retirement plans that has been slowly sapping the life blood out of GM.

Democrats are beholding to unions. Union money and union voters have helped elect Democrat candidates. Unions have made a great financial investment in the Democratic Party and as a result of this undue influence, unions in essence own the Democratic Party. Is it any wonder that Nancy Pelosi or Barack Obama would support a bailout plan that benefits unions? But, what about George Bush, doesn’t he support a bailout plan too? Yes, and a month ago Democrats were calling him our dumbest president ever. But, lets be clear Bush has not absolutely resolved a bailout is the only way to go, so hold that thought.

Old/New Focus for the GOP

Posted by Tina

Two articles in the Wall Street Journal today articulate my sense of the direction and focus that will best serve to strengthen the Republican Party and ensure our viability into the future. One recalls a period in our history when a loss in a presidential election was celebrated as a fatal blow to the GOP. In fact it gave rise to our most revered leader, Ronald Reagan. The second article is a call to reclaim Reagans vision of America, a free country made strong by the creativity and spirit of her people.

Dirty Tricks and Bob Mulholland-D

ER editorial: “While the City Council candidates ran a fairly clean campaign, an anonymous mailer sent to an unknown number of voters was deplorable. ( It was mailed out the day before the election and there was no time for the victim to respond.)

The mailer had a return address from a fictitious group. It was a hit piece aimed at Larry Wahl. The negative tone and accusations in the mailer aren’t worth repeating here.

In the fine print was the disclaimer, “Not authorized by any candidate or candidates committee.” It came from a post office box in Chico. Blogger Lon Glazner noted the P.O. box traces to Bob Mulholland, a renowned dirty campaigner for the Democratic Party. That box, Glazner said, also has been used by the Chico Democratic Club. Liberals on the council who benefited from the mailer should be embarrassed and should repudiate the actions of whoever sent the mailer. Local Democrats who care about ethical campaigning should, too.

Let’s hope voters were smart enough to see through the grease.”

Talking Obamas, Huxtables with Bill Cosby – The comedian says he is pleased about the ‘Huxtable factor’ in Obama’s election., by Greg Braxton

* Bill Cosby has long bristled at suggestions that his pioneering NBC comedy, “The Cosby Show,” was somehow unrealistic in its portrayal of a black upper-middle-class family. *** So with the Obama family set to take up residence in the White House, Cosby reflected on those statements last week with a chuckle. “For all those people who said they didn’t know any black people like the Huxtables,” quipped Cosby in a phone interview, “all I can say is, ‘Will you watch the show now?’ “ *

Bill Cosbys vision for black American families and children, as demonstrated on his show, is a good formula for all families.
