Were Sorry.Soooo Sorry

The U.S. Congress is scheduled to consider a national apology for the country’s slavery and Jim Crow eras. Tuesday’s House resolution, passed by a voice vote, could pave the way for a serious debate over reparations. The apology was authored by a Tennessee Democrat, Steve Cohen who represents a majority black district and currently faces a black challenger in a primary.

This resolution is an empty, feel good, political gesture that wont do a thing for a single person. Whats incredible to me is that the Civil Rights Amendment, something that did change things dramatically, something that was more than an empty gesture, and something that demonstrated clearly that Americans abhored our past history regarding slavery has not been sufficiently acknowledged or celebrated. While a great number of blacks took up the challenge afforded them, accomplished great things and prospered others chose instead to continue to live as victims. If an apology serves to motivate them OK by meI just doubt it will put an end to the propensity to blame others or use race as a way to benefit from special treatment or continue to demand reparations from folks who had nothing to do with slavery.

Beyond my own irrelevant social opinion there is apparently another greater reason to be concerned. Resolutions become a part of our official historical record so I would think the author would be required to get the history right. But according to Michael Medved Representative Cohen has not endeavored to do so:

California Getting Federal Bailout Money

by Jack Lee

California wild fires are the worst in this state’s history and the most costly. Over 25,000 fire fighters have been battling the blazes since mid-June and the cost of saving lives and property is staggering and far from over. California doesn’t have that kind of money; in fact California can’t even pay its regular bills – never mind the billions in emergency expenses! However, the federal government has promised to step in to help California. Unfortunately, 49 other states are also facing budget shortfalls, but none quite as dire as California that has overspent by 15 billion and some are saying that estimate is still too low.

No wonder the law makers in Sacramento are having trouble with the budget, they don’t even know how much the state’s owes, but that little detail has never stopped them from spending! The budget is now a month past due and the Gubernator is threatening to cut a $1.50 from the hourly wages of state employees to get us through this fiscal crisis.

Meanwhile, California bridges are suffering from deferred maintenance due to a lack of funding. Bridge inspectors are warning state officials we could have another bridge disaster like the Minneapolis Bridge collapse unless something is done about this and fast. More requests for federal money?

GM Hemorages Money – Gov Bailout Possible

DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Corp. (GM) recorded a stunning $15.5 billion second-quarter net loss, slammed by sinking auto sales, money lost on bad lease deals and costs tied to its North American restructuring.

The auto maker’s revenue sank $8.5 billion from a year ago to $38.2 billion, as GM’s sales slide in the U.S. continued and growth slowed in other regions around the globe.

Could a Chrysler style government bailout be just around the corner for GM? The old saying was, as GM goes, so goes the nation. A prophetic statement?
