Durham Almond Blossom Run
Don't forget, the first local race of the 2007 racing season is right around the corner!! The Durham Almond Blossom Run will be held Saturday, February 17, 2007, RAIN OR SHINE. The event begins at the Durham High School, at 9:00 AM, registration begins at 7:00 AM on race day. Cost is only $18 for pre-resistered runners, and $20 for race-day registration. Entry gets you a goody bag, a classic "Almond Blossom" Tee shirt, and a beautiful run along the almond orchards and streets of Durham, and medals to the top three runners in each age group. There is a 5k and 10k run, as well as an 5k walk. If you want a race to "PR" this is it, as the weather is usually pretty cool, and the course if pancake flat - perfect conditions for running a very fast race.
I will be running the 5k race this year. This is my "short" race of the year, and helps me focus on my speed work over the winter months. My goal is to break 22 minutes, and to place in my age category. There is nothing better than hearing your name called out, and walking up to the podium to receive a medal, surrounded by your friends and neighbors.
This race also is special to me, as it is the first race I ever entered in my life - just a short 5 years ago. My wife and I walked the 5k race, with a blindingly fast time of 54 minutes. That was a turning point in my life, as I decided that I wanted to try to run the race the next year. I have been running that race ever since, and getting just a little faster each year.
Should be a great turn out, and a fun race. For further information call the race director at 895-8484.
