Week 10, 1/2 Iron Distance Training Plan
Well, the City of Gold triathlon this Saturday will finish off my 10th week of training (out of a 20 week plan) for the Vineman 1/2 Iron Distance Race on July 22. Thus far, the training has been pretty good - I've missed a few workouts, but did a few extra things (like a 100 mile race and a 1/2 marathon before I started this plan) so I think overall I'm doing OK. My swim times continue to improve (small improvements, but at this point I'll take anything I can get), and my bike speed has improved quite a bit (I can now hold a 20 mph pace pretty well on the flats), compared to about an 18 mph pace a year ago.
My stats for this year, so far are:
Bike - 735 miles
Run - 230 miles
Swim - 35,900 yards
I can't believe that I am half-way thru the training for this race. When I first started contemplating the "leap" from an Olympic distance to a 1/2 IM, I just knew that the training would be pure torture. Suprisingly, the overall training load has not been that bad, and is certainly easier that training for a marathon (with the running 6 days a week).
I will reserve judgement, of course, until I complete the race - there is a lot that can go wrong in 10 weeks, and then during a 70.3 mile event.

Dennis,
Nice stats for the year! Your 1/2 IM will be another inspiration to watch less TV and start to getting on the bike/court more often....wonder if it would be out of line to wear my GPS while playing basketball?
Great job - I will have to log more miles on the bike so I can try to keep up with you!
