6_26_07 Workout

Swim was "supposed" to be long - I woke up early, got to the gym early, going to do 50 or 60 laps. Started out with a good, easy pace, all was good till about lap 30 - and my calf muscles started talking to me (a product of my long workouts this weekend). Two more laps, and my calves were yelling at me, telling me that if I didnt' stop quickly, they would tie themselves into a knot that it would take me a week to undo. Tried pool walking, that didn't do it so I bagged it at 32 laps.

Jumped on the treadmill, did a little speed work - actually felt good. I hadn't been on a treadmill since, about December - and it was kinda fun to push the speed envelope for short distances. Did five sets with a 6.5 minute paces, then one at 6 minute and one at 5'30 second pace. Not a long distance, probably a tenth of a mile or two for each - but a good, high intensity workout.

I haven't lost site of that 6 minute mile I have been promising myself - just a soon as I recover from Vineman I am going to have to start working on that goal.

Vineman Update

Only 29 days left until the Vineman 70.3 Race!!! My preparation has gone pretty well, I'm in week 16 of my 20 week training program. I've been able to get most of the scheduled work-outs in (probably about 85% or so), but in a few instances having a life, a job and a family caused me to skip the workouts. My longest run in the flatlands thus far has been 13.3 miles, and my longest run in the hills of Paradise is 10 miles. I plan on doing one more long hill run this coming weekend (probably on the order of 15 miles) and then start tapering down.

I have not been able to get in the number of long bike rides I would have liked - finding an extra 4 or 5 hours on the weekends is pretty hard to do. However, I have put in plenty of shorter rides (most in the early morning, before work) so I'm not really concerned about the bike ride portion.

My swim --- well, it is what it is. I've pretty much relegated myself to being a slow swimmer for the rest of my life. I gotten my 100 yard times down to a pretty consistent 2 minutes with my wetsuit - and that seems to be about the fastest I can coax this old body to move through the water. The good think about being a slow swimmer, is that there is lots of people to pass on the bike and the run!!!!!

MudSkipper Race

Ok, everyone - here is the flyer for the first ever "MUDSKIPPER" Race to be held at the historic Meadow Brook Ranch which is on Skyway, about 10-15 minutes above Magalia. This race will be "OFF_ROAD", so no traffic to worry about - and should be a bucket full of fun!!!

For more information, contact Michelle or Karl at Trailhead Adventures, or the gang at Beyond Fitness.

Augus Frias Time Trials

Whew!!!! Went out with the Chico Corsa Bike Club Thursday night, and did a 24.8 mile time trial. Really low key affair, just show up, line up, and when the timer (Thanks, Rodney) picks your number off you go!!!!

Lots of wind on the way out, and had to push really hard to maintain 17 mph. Was able to pass two riders, then two guys blew past me like I was on a tricycle!!!!!

The last girl I passed was able to catch back up to me at the turn-around point, and we battled all the way to the finsh - when she was able to take me by a good couple of hundred yards.

Once I finished, I realized that I could hardly walk - my ham's were about half locked up, and my hips hurt terribly. I've never had this after a bike ride - it felt more like a 15 mile run!!!

I'm guessing that with the competition element (that little voice in my head kept saying, come on, are you going to let a GIRL beat you) I must have pushed myself a little bit harder than I'm used to!!!

I ended up placing 8th out of 16 riders, with a time of 77 minutes, 40 seconds. The first rider across this line had a smoking fast time of 62 minutes and 10 seconds, the last rider had a time of 88 minutes and 58 seconds.

Anyway, happy with my time, I keep getting closer to that ever elusive 20 mph pace!!!
