Salt

The issue of a divine plan vs a random formation of Earth has been debated for centuries. And who knows who's actually right? Do I personally believe in God? Yeah, I do. Am I so embeded in faith that I can't entertain any other possibility? Absolutely not. I often question how we all got here, why bad things happen to good people (and why good things happen to bad people) and a host of other questions that philosophers and theologists have always debated.

But a simple event happen today that made me really ponder and got my personal pendulum swinging into the "divine plan" category in a big way. It all has to do with salt.

I was sitting on the sofa watching the UFC and eating an apple with salt on it (yes, I salt my apples. Just the green ones though) It was as I popped an especially salty chunk into my mouth that I started thinking about salt. You see, our tongues can sense several different "flavors": sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. Several different substances are sweet, same with sour and bitter. But salty tastes all come from one source; salt. Only salt tastes salty, nothing else. Could it be random that our bodies are designed to taste something that only comes from one source when the rest of our senses of taste are so diverse? I don't think so.

Now I'm not going to pretend that I know why we are built the way were built. I wasn't consulted in any master plan so I don't have some sort of insider knowledge that will answer the whys. Salt is a vital nutrient but so is iron and we don't have any receptors designed specifically to taste iron. I wouldn't say that its for the enjoyment of the taste either. Ever just poured some salt on your tongue? It's awful. So who knows why? I just don't see it being random.

PS: The medical community which has for years declared salt evil and blamed it for causing everything from cancer to hypertension is now of the opinion that salt, in moderation, isn't bad for you at all and, in people with normal kidney function, can be eaten freely. As long as you drink plenty of water it will flush out of your system causing no ill effects at all. Silly doctors, always changing their minds.

We have to change our minds otherwise we can't sell more text books, pills, and treatments in order to subvert the general populace.

Oh don't even get me started on the drug companies and their frequent attepts to push their snake oil. The millions spent on drugs that solve minor problems at the expense of major side effects (of which there are of course other drugs to combat) is astounding. But that's another blog.
