Re: I want winners! …

or at least 50 percent of them, apparently.

Before we get to Week 2 picks, which I’ll post either Thursday night or Friday afternoon, let’s take a look at how the Week 1 picks went. Week 1 lineup (6 wins and 6 losses and with Week Zero’s 3-0 start, I’m at 9-6 overall for the season)

Week 1

Wrong - Chico at Center-Antelope.  Winner: Chico. Nope. Center won 20-18. A loss for the Panthers and me.

Wrong - Lassen at Pleasant Valley. Winner: PV. Faith in Vikings wasn’t rewarded as Lassen won 26-7.

Correct – Red Bluff at Oroville. Winner: Red Bluff.  Spartans were sloppy but won.

Wrong – Paradise at Napa. Winner: Paradise. The Bobcats are 0-2. Stop the presses.

Correct – Las Plumas at Corning. Winner: Corning. Cardinals cruised in their home opener.

Wrong – Fall River at Biggs. Winner: Fall River. Biggs surprised many by beating a well-rested Fall River team.

Wrong - Durham at Clear Lake. Winner: Durham. Trojans didn’t fare well and are now at 0-2. This team has a bunch of returning starters, except, well one, head coach Kevin York.

Correct – Gridley at Willows. Winner: Willows. Honkers cruised.

Correct – Orland at Anderson. Winner: Orland. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Wrong – Pierce at Hamilton. Winner: Pierce. Big win in Braves’ home opener. Guess we shouldn’t be surprised. The new blood acquitted themselves quite well, even if my picks didn’t.

Correct – Redding Christian at Princeton. Winner: Redding Christian. Redding Christian’s Hayden Piper had another big day.

Correct – Bonus: West Valley at Shasta. Winner: West Valley. Speaking of big days, Austin Clark ran for 352 yards on 12 carries as part of West Valley’s 612 yards rushing in a 41-7 romp at Shasta. Those stats aren’t typos. The Eagles ran for 612 yards on 38 carries for an average of 16.11 per carry. Clark averaged 29.33 yards per carry. Yowza.

Feel free to make some picks in the comments section.

I want winners!

Here are some predictions sure to go wrong. After all, I should probably retire after going 3-0 last week (Grant over Paradise, Colusa at home holding off Durham and Dunsmuir besting Princeton in a limited Week Zero schedule).

Here’s the Week 1 lineup for tonight’s games involving area teams.

Chico at Center-Antelope.  Winner: Chico. The toughest call. I’ll take Clayton Welch having a big night, and the defense comes to play. Advantage Chico.

Lassen at Pleasant Valley. Winner: PV. Just like going to Susanville is hard, traveling from there to play is equally tough. Think PV gets the win and starts 1-0

Red Bluff at Oroville. Winner: Red Bluff. Red Bluff starts new offense and defense, but all those track athletes are tough to keep up with.

Paradise at Napa. Winner: Paradise. Bobcats bounce back with a win on a long road trip.

Las Plumas at Corning. Winner: Corning. Cardinals are tough at home.

Fall River at Biggs. Winner: Fall River. Fall River looked sharp in its season opener. Bulldogs pull one out at Biggs.

Durham at Clear Lake. Winner: Durham. Durham has a game played, that will come in handy tonight.

Gridley at Willows. Winner: Willows. Willows is an experience group, capable of beating bigger schools like Gridley.

Orland at Anderson. Winner: Orland. Difference in talent.

Pierce at Hamilton. Winner: Pierce. Hamilton is a little green at several positions, at least at the varsity level. Pierce already has a game under its belts. Bad combination.

Redding Christian at Princeton. Winner: Redding Christian. Hayden Piper, RC’s QB might be the best player in DVI.

Bonus: In the Northern Section matchup (two section teams) of the night, I’ll take West Valley on the road at Shasta. Though, a green QB leaves me some doubt in West Valley against a quality opponent like Shasta, which has the experienced signal-caller in Bailey Odell, an underrated athlete.

Who do you have?

Ladies and gentlemen…

Your Tour GuideWelcome to the North State Sports and Shorts blog. Please keep your hands and feet inside the blog at all times until the ride is over. We’ll be visiting high school sports, Butte College athletics, some Chico State stuff, Northern California pro sports such as the Bay Area teams, and other various things such as fantasy sports. But the emphasis will be high school sports in the area. We’ll even link to other stories that are interesting whether they’re sports or just stuff worth the time because let’s face it all sports and no play make Jack a dull boy. I have some ideas for regular features, but more on those much later on down the road. If there’s something you want to read about, please feel free to speak up. After all, this blog isn’t just mine. I hope it’s yours as well. Just know we’ll try to keep it informative, interesting and educational, but if nothing else at least I hope it will remain interesting. After all, they’ve done studies, you know. Sixty percent of the time, it works every time. And with a little luck this blog just might be better than bad, it’s good. If you get these references, you’re going to fit right in here. Welcome and, I hope, enjoy. — Your Tour Guide, Joseph Shufelberger
