Shortly after his California defeat Romney announced he was still in the race, however disillusionment and disappointment took its toll and he sudenly dropped out to the chagrin of millions of his supporters.
Now I can’t help but wonder If Romney was a Presbyterian or a Baptist would he have been our front runner now? We’ll never know, but it would be a shame if that was it.
It sure seemed to me as if his religion was the man’s main detraction. It’s no secret that many Christians, and not just the fundamentalists, feel that the Mormon religion is a cult and the founder, Joseph Smith was anything but a Prophet. That’s a lot of baggage for a Presidential candidate to carry in a party where the traditional Christian religion is important to the overwhelming majority.
In private I was not above this prejudice, but it wasn’t enough to discount Romney completely and I never expressed these concerns until now. So, just know I’m feeling a little squimish as I write this!
The very vocal Mormon critics have brought a lot of unwanted attention to Romney’s faith while making fun of some of the Mormon’s more eccentric or quirky beliefs, but what religion doesn’t have some odd notions? I know, yours!
As people publically point the finger at Mormon’s there are always three more fingers privately pointing back at them, For those people I remind them, religion is faith based and faith is not determined by some universal standard of what one may consider too absurd or too preposterous. Religion is based more on feelings of the heart and not courtroom style evidence. Besides that point consider that not every single Mormon believes every single tenet of their religion. Just as non-Mormons often take issue with any number of minor points within their faith or even some assertions in the Bible. So I hope we were not too harsh on Romney, it could not have been easy for him to take the criticism and insults against his faith.
Whatever the reasons for his departure from the race, it was unfair to rail on Romney ONLY over his religion and refuse to vote for him ONLY because he was a Mormon.
Religion aside, his judgement in life has been outstanding. He is an excellent businessman and had turned around many failing companies before going into politics. He was a strong leader with a god head for business. That might have been just the kind of abilities we needed as this nation drifts closer to brink of an economic cliff.
Mike Huckabee is now squared off against McCain. Does he have a chance? Let me ask that another way, does a humble man of character and wisdom without much money have a chance against big money and the big political machine? Hmmmm…let’s all take 1.5 seconds to figure it out.
McCain is the winner.
Like him or not, your next choice is Hillary, followed by Obama. Now tell me you won’t support McCain?
