AP Buries Madam Speaker’s Remarks

This article from the AP has a little gem buried deep within the text. Neither its title nor it’s beginning paragraph offer the slightest clue as to what ‘s buried deep within. Here’s how the story begins:

BAGHDAD – Nearly 1,000 people have been detained in a sweep to break al-Qaida in Iraq’s sway in Iraq’s third largest city, Mosul, but many of the fighters have fled to nearby areas, where troops are hunting for them, Iraqi officials said Saturday.

But if you scan down to the 18th paragraph you’ll find a few words about Nancy Pelosis recent trip to Iraq and the successes she discovered about Iraq and the success of the surge:

The prime minister (of Iraq) returned to Baghdad from Mosul where he has been overseeing the crackdown to meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who made a surprise visit to Iraq on Saturday. ** Pelosi, a top Democratic critic of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, expressed confidence that expected provincial elections will promote national reconciliation. ** ** “We’re assured the elections will happen here, they will be transparent, they will be inclusive and they will take Iraq closer to the reconciliation we all want it to have,” said Pelosi. She also met with Iraq’s parliament speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Gen. David Petraeus, the top American commander in Iraq.

Puleeease! “Reconcilliation we all want it to have”? She hasn’t wanted reconcilliation…she has wanted to abandon the Iraqi people and force our troops to come home with their heads hung low. Democrats have been extremely critical of the Iraq war, President Bush, General David Petreaus, the Surge, and the Iraqi government. They have held hearings and threatened lawsuits and censure. They have done little to aid the war effort and a great deal to undermine it. Empty, but we support the troops pleas just don’t mean squat in the larger picture.

Could it be that she will now posture to take some measure of credit for our victory…wil lshe attempt to smooth and soothe the rough, deep and ragged cuts her party has inflicted regarding the war…does she wish to scrub the egg from the faces of democrats in Congress as we head toward the election in November?

Note to the AP: This is an election year. Ms Pelosi’s sudden awakening… this “should have had a V-8” momment by the person who is third in line to the Presidency…should warrant a headline and story of its own. Get busy!
