The Donation Trap – It’s Worse than Feeding the Park Pidgeons

39-cash-pile-notes.gifAbout 8 years ago I sent McCain a donation because I liked what he said about taking bribe money out of politics, i.e., big donations used to buy favors. From that time till now I bet I have received no less than 30 pieces of mail requesting more money. And since July of this year I get at least one request every week asking me for more money! This guy hits me up for spare change more than my own kids!

I only sent in $25 the first time, so by now they have used all that up and then some in the manpower and postage just asking me for more cash, which I have never sent because I resent being pestered. The McCain election committee would be money if ahead if I had never sent them any money!

But, it’s not just McCain, they all do it and that’s the problem. You’re almost afraid to give because then you are on “the list” of likely donors because watch out…here it comes. I think that list gets sold to other campaigns and charities because right after I gave my $25 donation I was hit up by all sorts of people and charities I never heard of before. That one little donation was like blood in the water to sharks!

I recall this lady in her 90’s who never could remember if she sent her favorite candidate any money, so every time they sent her a request for a donation she just sent them another check never realizing how much she was giving them in total. That seems like elder abuse to me. In my case it’s a matter of mail box abuse, followed by garbage can abuse.

I signed up with the US Post Office to avoid junk mail, but I still get them, but probably not quite as many as if I had not signed up at all.

I’ll bet most of you are like me, that is, if you want to give you will give, you don’t need to be badgered by endless begging letters. They just go straight to the round file.

As much as I hate to say it, I wish there was a law that says once you have contributed to a candidate they can’t ask you again for at least another year!
